You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

Sorry to hear about your friend Carrie.

CarrieBlue · 28/01/2021 14:42
@CarrieBlue so sorry to hear this.
I've just had my first vaccine (cev). A humbling experience.
That’s very good news Smile

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2021 14:45

Remember Boris was in hospital on oxygen and yet back at work remarkably quickly.

HerdyGerdy · 28/01/2021 14:56
@HerdyGerdy - thank you, I need some positive experiences to stop my wobbles. There are treatments now too aren’t there?
MiL was on oxygen and a couple of other machines (including one normally used for sleep apnoea) to monitor everything. Those + various drugs + rest really helped her. After a few days on oxygen, they slowly weaned her off. It sounds (and I hope) that your friend is at the ‘better’ end of a shit scale.

Not sure if it’s helpful, but we bought MiL a finger monitor that checks blood oxygen levels so that she can keep an eye on what’s happening at home. Neither FiL or MiL realised that their oxygen levels were as terrifyingly low as they were until admitted. Those who struggle once released seem to have blood oxygen level issues. Might be useful for your friend. Was only an Amazon purchase and about a tenner.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend Carrie. I hope she makes a full and speedy recovery.

I'm glad to hear your mil is home now herdy, although sorry that she's still ill, being released has got to be a good sign that she's recovering nicely. How's your fil doing?

Flumposie great news that you've had your first vaccine. Hopefully you'll be able to relax a little once you've got that first bit of immunity.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 28/01/2021 15:06

You know, there's a thread on MN about CAHMS waiting lists. A SENCO came on to it and sort of touched on how traumatising it is to be a SENCO, a Head, a teacher, pushing for referrrals and having to try and deal, day in and day out, with children in all kinds of need, knowing they won't be seen - perhaps for years.

It broke me completely. I managed 2 whole years of SENCO before I just couldn't do it anymore. We all, ALL know what these kids need - the parents know it, the teachers know it, the SENCO knows, the outside agencies know, but there is no money for it.

I had an 8 year old child in front of me howling and hacking at his wrist with a ruler, while on hold to CAMHS - I held out the phone so they could hear it. They said they'd get back to me urgently. The next DAY an email arrived saying they couldn't do anything, he was number 38 in the queue. By then we and the parents had obviously taken emergency measures. But you know, I was back in class an hour later as if nothing had happened.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 28/01/2021 15:09

On the social worker thing, a friend of mine hasn't been out of the house on a visit since last March. She's had her first jab now. I said 'oh good, you'll be back out there then...' she said 'well, it depends - we're waiting to hear, there are still risks after we've been vaccinated, it won't be safe'.

FFS, why bother vaccinating anyone then?

JanuaryChill · 28/01/2021 15:20

Oh Rule.

HerdyGerdy · 28/01/2021 15:26

Bloody hell Rule. It’s certainly not a job I could manage.

Thanks MsAwesome FiL is still in hospital. It’s all rather shit. He managed to have a video ‘chat’ with DP and MiL who was allowed to visit his ward while she was in. He can’t talk and doesn’t know what’s going on. He’s also paralysed down one side. It was really distressing for DP to see - not being able to visit has meant that the physical aspects have been hidden from us because the hospital just tell us basics.

JanuaryChill · 28/01/2021 15:35

Am sure I should know this, but I don't: Is it correct that a hospital patient admitted too late (10+ days later)!to test for Covid, if they go on to die of suspected Covid, won't be counted as a Covid death?

Have just read someone making this point, and saying therefore as testing is going down currently Covid deaths figures will decrease but hospitals still be full??

JanuaryChill · 28/01/2021 15:36

Oops wrong thread! Although if you know the answer do tell!

RandomGrammarPun · 28/01/2021 15:58

Is testing going down?

Regardless, I don't think that would be true. Doctor/coroner are allowed to put Covid down on dc without a test if they clinically believe patient had it (as far as I'm aware?)

CallmeAngelina · 28/01/2021 16:07

So if someone like lovely Kate Garroway's husband Derek were, God forbid, to die at this point or in the near future, would he not count in the Covid figures? Because it's been more than 28 days since he tested positive for Covid?

chocolateisavegetable · 28/01/2021 16:19

Carrie I'm very sorry to hear about your friend
Flumposie Great news!

I'm after some advice if anyone can help. I'm a TA in primary and just been told there's now a rota for us cleaning toilets during the day. I'm just not happy with this as Covid is an airborne virus and I've read articles saying that the virus can be transmitted via "toilet plumes."

Is anyone else (who isn't a cleaner) being asked to do this?

Piggywaspushed · 28/01/2021 16:22

Someone once answered the Kate Garraway question on the data thread but I can no longer remember the answer.

RigaBalsam · 28/01/2021 16:26

Am in tears if relief. My parents are getting the vaccine on Sunday. Though didn't like the Germany saying its not to be given to over 65s.

RandomGrammarPun · 28/01/2021 16:29

They wouldn't count in the daily figures released by the govt but would count in the ONS death certificate figures. There's not much difference in it now - the figure outside of the 28 day window is about 103,000.

thecatfromjapan · 28/01/2021 16:31

chocolateisavegetable Are you in the GMB or Unison? I think it's worth contacting them.

My TA friends aren't cleaning toilets but I know some schools have asked this.

So I reckon you need some support.

MsAwesomeDragon · 28/01/2021 16:35

God rule that really does sound incredibly traumatic. I know the few times I've had to deal with safeguarding stuff it keeps me awake for days as I just can't stop thinking about the poor kids involved. I couldn't do it more often as it would definitely break me. I've put in just as many safeguarding referrals during lockdown as I would normally do in school (including one to the la safeguarding team directly about a child who doesn't attend my school!). One was a horrific thing that happened in the family of one of my pupils and they just casually mentioned it as part of an apology for being late to submit some work. I passed it on, but I have no idea if there are any outside agencies available to help the family.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 28/01/2021 16:36

All this 'what is and isn't counted' stuff confuses the hell out of me.

MsAwesomeDragon · 28/01/2021 16:38

herdy that sounds awful for your fil. I hope he turns a corner in his recovery soon.

chocolateisavegetable · 28/01/2021 16:39

thecatfromjapan I'm in Unison and that's a good suggestion to contact them - thank you

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2021 16:41

I had a toilet thread in July (of course I did, threads for all occasions) and there were a few TAs on there who were expected to do cleaning and weren’t happy. I reckon if you contact your union you won’t be the first to bring it up so hopefully they will be able to help.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3966655-Are-you-being-told-to-clean-toilets-at-work

chocolateisavegetable · 28/01/2021 16:42

Rule just read your post - that's just awful. I knew a child who took an overdose so was assessed by CAMHS - who said that it "wasn't serious enough" for them to see her. Guess what - she took another overdose. Thank goodness she survived and parents got help privately.

chocolateisavegetable · 28/01/2021 16:43

Thank you so much noble
I should have just done a search on all of your past threads before asking a question Grin
