You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give ‘The Every twat for Themselves mob’ the staffroom password as a number of them are operating in an alternative reality.

No DfE muppets allowed

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom, especially if you have not used the hand gel. Close the door quietly on your way out and put your mask on

I always make sure I get the flu jab now as I've had proper flu 4 times. Took me months to get totally over it each time as well as I ended up with chest infections and other secondary infections.....

minisoksmakehardwork · 21/09/2020 20:26

Joy! I have a child with a not quite covid temp - 37.5 - but still hot to touch, headache and cough. He didn't want to go to club tonight and hasn't even played his games!! This is a child who is rarely ill so taking it seriously. And no tests to be had.

Have messaged my manager who was lovely, just to give them a heads up as dept already short staffed.

Mind, if we have to SI, it will give my young charges a break from me nagging them lol.

hedgehogger1 · 21/09/2020 20:28

Was it on here someone had shared graphs of different risk factors? I can't find it now

SaltyAndFresh · 21/09/2020 20:28

Yeah I've been tested today. Not really sudden, started with a sore throat in the early hours of Sunday. Thank you for giving me attention Grin woe is me.

WhyNotMe40 · 21/09/2020 20:28

@MrsHamlet

Genuine I think. She's in year 12. There are some major local employers where distancing is problematic who were badly hit early on and I wonder whether that's the source. Poor kid. And poor Salty. I hope it's flu!
That surely needs investigation then! Both the catching it 3 times, and the local employers..... Incidentally has she had worse symptoms or easier symptoms in later infections? I'm pretty sure we all had it 2 weeks before lockdown, especially with the new knowledge of other symptoms in children.
MrsHamlet · 21/09/2020 20:29

The LA gives us all flu jabs but more than half the staff don't take them because "they give you flu".
I had it in y12 and mum made me go to school. I can vividly remember being squashed under the radiator in the common room with a pile of coats on me, shivering, and someone getting the head of year. Mum was not impressed at being summoned... and as she didn't have a car, we had to stagger home. Aside from when my appendix went kaboom, I've never felt so ill. Mum apologised for not believing me 🤣

monkeytennis97 · 21/09/2020 20:29

@SaltyAndFresh get well soon ThanksThanksThanksThanks

There, there Brew , pats hand. Grin

Lots on my registers today said "flu".... I assumed exaggeration of the cold that's doing the rounds, but could be Covid, could be flu.
So having got a negative for dd1, she is now (a week later) coughing again, temperature of 37.6 and a headache.... What are the odds?! Confused

eitak22 · 21/09/2020 20:31

@SaltyAndFresh

Current temperature Confused (yes I am in bed). Any guesses what's wrong with me if I'm Covid negative? Hot, coughing, shivery, bunged up, sore throat and a bit of a dodgy stomach.
Sounds like Flu if it's not Covid. I remember feeling Ill in the morning with a sore throat and feeling tired them ended up with fever and not being able to leave bed so definitely rest up!
MrsHamlet · 21/09/2020 20:32

I don't know about the symptoms, Why. If she ever makes it in, we'll have to ask her. It's baffling though.
We now have a local test centre again - that's worrying in itself!

Piggywaspushed · 21/09/2020 20:32

It was me hedge . Will try to find it.

MrsHerculePoirot · 21/09/2020 20:33

@SaltyAndFresh get better soon!

TheHoneyBadger · 21/09/2020 20:40

Does flu start this early? It’s a worry that so many of us are ill given we’re allegedly operating in such safe conditions to avoid infection spread.

MsAwesomeDragon · 21/09/2020 20:41

Get well soon salty 💐💐 What you've got definitely sounds like classic covid symptoms, but also could be flu or another virus.

My LA pays for all staff to get flu vaccines every year too. We have a pretty good uptake, because a local pharmacist comes in one morning to do them for any staff that want them. He's there at break and lunch, plus during p3 for anyone free. It's convenient and free, so most staff take them up on it. This year the local gp surgeries are running drive through flu jab clinics, so I'll have to take dh for his (first year for him as he's just aged in, and he doesn't drive), so I'll probably get mine at the same time.

GuyFawkesDay · 21/09/2020 20:54

I've got mine tomorrow, I rang to ask about my Yr7 DS getting the flu nasal spray, but school are doing these apparently.

Asked about me and they were all "yes, you're priority as a teacher" so booked in to be stabbed tomorrow! They said, my GP surgery is AMAZING. They're staggeringly organised, efficient and on it. We can get Covid tests same day from them as s registered patient.

WhyNotMe40 · 21/09/2020 20:55

I tried to get a flu jab last week - they've run out already!

MrsHamlet · 21/09/2020 20:56

We have nasal flu for the kids this week. We used to have our own school nurse but she went back to hospitals in March! I think people would be more likely to get stabbed if it was in school.

hedgehogger1 · 21/09/2020 21:16

Thanks @Piggywaspushed

Useruseruserusee · 21/09/2020 21:19

Confirmed case at my DHs school today - one teacher positive and 7 sent home to isolate as close contacts. Apparently all teenagers fine to keep coming in though.

Nothing yet at my school. We had a child who we were all convinced would be positive, temp of 39 and the worst cough I’ve heard in ages. But the test came back negative.

Lots of children with the X code trying to sneak back in every day as well but we have a good system to spot them now.

Piggywaspushed · 21/09/2020 21:25

Our GO said they are trying to get flu jabs for the ones entitled 'by the end of October'... DH is CV!

His school seem to have struck some deal with Boots, so hopefully that will be quicker.

Keepdistance · 21/09/2020 21:27

My dc temp was 39 it was really brief though. It was negative. I did hear from a friend one of the class had tonsillitis so maybe it's that. Certainly is a killer sore throat. And sounds like a few schools are suffering with strep which causes tonsillitis and scarlet fever.

Useruseruserusee · 21/09/2020 21:28

How is everyone managing the worry about vulnerable family members?

My three year old was previously shielded. DH teaches secondary, I teach primary and our older DS is in a different primary school. I can’t exactly keep a distance from him when I am at home and I’m so worried one of us will pass it on. I know everyone goes on about children not being impacted by Covid but his surgeon believes he would be hospitalised, as over 50% of children with his condition are. It’s such a worry.

We also have my Mum looking after him as the medical team have advised against him going to nursery until Covid settles. My Mum is healthy with no conditions but she is 60+.

Danglingmod · 21/09/2020 21:33

Staying away from mine at all times. Separate beds, bathrooms, living rooms. We take it in turns to cook the evening meal and the other stays out of the kitchen.

But my extremely clinically vulnerable family member is 50 years older than yours! You can't isolate from a three year old Sad

Useruseruserusee · 21/09/2020 21:36

That must be really hard too though, staying away from someone in your household.

I’m trying to stay realistic. He has been hospitalised with a virus at least once every winter since birth and for children Covid doesn’t seem to be that much worse than a typical virus. Telling myself that I can cope with it when it happens.
