You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs
Do not give ‘The Every twat for Themselves mob’ the staffroom password as a number of them are operating in an alternative reality.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom. Close the door quietly on your way out

@Saucery

ClockSpanner they are saying shops aren’t safe! I can’t get my head round that, after telling everyone they are safe 😱😱 Either they think the virus is floating around shops and the precautions they say are adequate (masks, hand washing) are not adequate at all, or they are saying schools aren’t safe and you could be bringing the virus out with you from there to shops.

Why are office workers safe to go to Pret but teachers aren’t?

Exactly!

They want commuters back in offices so they can spend money in shops and cafes at lunchtimes, but if teachers do that, they are putting the children at risk??

@MrsHamlet

I've befriended my postman during lockdown. We had a wave and a window chat every day. I love my job. I'm good at my job. I know that what I do is important, not so much because of squishing Shakespeare into reluctant teenage brains, but all the other bits, including supporting colleagues. But it's a job. It pays the bills. I am not intending to leave, but I'm also not prepared to let it be the only thing I do. I'm not afraid of dying of Covid, but I am afraid of being a link in a chain in which someone's parent dies.
This sums up all my thoughts exactly!
Hercwasonaroll · 23/08/2020 18:07

I am not being told what to do outside of my directed hours.

I'm being honest with friends. Here's my work situation, your call. If they don't want to see me I won't be offended. I know I'm a risk.

However I'll still be going to the pub, shops etc. I need a life!!

Iamnotthe1 · 23/08/2020 18:19

My partner and I don't live together. From March, I'd not seen him due to his vulnerabilities. As a result of completely isolating this summer, we've been able to spend time together for the last few weeks. That'll disappear again as soon as I go back: I'm just too much of a risk.

AugustBreeze · 23/08/2020 18:22

Gosh, am quite 😮 at staff being told or even advised as to what they do in their lunchtimes!

Piggywaspushed · 23/08/2020 18:22

BBC anchor was just really going for a Unison man on TV. I thought it was clear he doesn't represent teachers but if you didn't work in a school you wouldn't be : heceas introduced as being from ' one of the largest unions'. Hence genuine concerns of school support staff brushed aside.
Meanwhile, Sky News exclusive reports that Roger Taylor, algorithm guy, was also responsible for an algorithm scandal at Mid Staffs Hospital Trust. The one that led to elderly patients dying...

Saucery · 23/08/2020 18:25

Unison are doing a cracking impression of a chocolate teapot over Covid. Anyone who says they are stopping any school staff from returning is talking utter bollocks and I have emails to prove it.

CountDuckulasKetchup · 23/08/2020 18:35

Feeling gloomy today Sad

Have been sticking my head in the sand a bit and pretending it's not happening. Think with a week to go I'm having to admit no-one is going to stop this shitshow.

Just feel like it's going to be so much harder than normal and sep is normally hard anyway. No breaks, no adult contact, replanning everything so it's chalk and talk, no practicals (science) and behaviour management will be so much harder stuck at the front.

Why are sixth form colleges allowed to do blended learning BTW? Dd had info this week that it's week in week out, why are sixth form in 11-18 schools not allowed the same protection?

BelleSausage · 23/08/2020 18:42

That is poor @hedgehogger1 How are we supposed to run an education system with staff constantly popping in and out for self isolation?

Ours came through this afternoon! Negative! Thank god.

This does make me wary of the unintended consequences of being out and about more. My contact tracing list would have been huge for this week just because DD had been to nursery, I’d been to see two sets of friends separately (one eat out to help out) and DH has been at work.

They haven’t thought this through at all!

BelleSausage · 23/08/2020 18:44

Good news!

WHO says children over 12 should wear masks in place where social distancing not possible!

Sorry if already posted.

FrippEnos · 23/08/2020 19:03

BelleSausage

According to another thread WHO are not to be trusted as there were in league with china hiding the information about the virus.

It shows you how desperate some posters are.

ohthegoats · 23/08/2020 19:05

My stress mouth ulcers have appeared. Yay! Was hoping for another week without them, but never mind.

If anyone thinks they can tell me what to do outside work, they can kiss my arse. Most of my friends are teachers, we're all waiting to go back to 'normal' once we go back to school. Everyone has been taking it easy over the summer so as not to get a holiday wrecking call from track and trace.

Also I've been seeing elderly relatives, which I won't when I go back to school. Waiting for a shit storm frankly.

phlebasconsidered · 23/08/2020 19:19

I get stress ulcers too. You can get gel that my ds uses on his braces (or will do, when he gets his refit....) and I find that helps. I grind my teeth at night too.

I've been really good about safety because of mum living with us, and so have my teens, but last night dd had a big teary wobble on me in case she brought it back to nan in September. There's really not much I can say to comfort her.

I veer between wanting to continue to be cautious and going "What's the bloody point!"

Finding daytime care for mum is also virtually impossible. The care she was getting is no longer there. I think i'll have to pay through the nose privately. She just needs a couple of pop ins and prompting to microwave the lunch and this was being done by a less elderly neighbour for pin money and companionship but I don't feel I can expose her to our massive bubble either now. The GP was sympathetic but unhelpful - she basically needs to hurt herself or burn the house to get nhs help right now! I think she's got worse because none of her usual dementia groups have been on.

Sorry. Having a wibble!

The WHO's recommendations seem to be generally things the English government refuse to do for at least several months until that have lots of evidence that they were wrong not to follow them.

Definitely-I’m glad they made that statement.

‘50’ is not very happy over on the masks thread though-I’m making pompous predictions I don’t have the credentials to make, apparently!

WhyNotMe40 · 23/08/2020 19:28

50 is aware she is now coming across as a bit of an arse Grin

Depressingly accurate

You predicted that masks would be used in secondaries soon, a busy indoor environment where it's not possible to socially distance. I can't see why you would need any credentials to state something that is happening in every other environment that meets this criteria. Surely it's common sense.

Yup!

You’d think someone who is apparently a teacher themselves would be very aware of this!

Saucery · 23/08/2020 19:36

phlebasconsidered a private care company worked very well for an elderly relative of mine, doing exactly what you say your Mum needs (and then more intensive/frequent visits for medication etc later on ). It was an expense, for sure, but I don’t think it was a ridiculous amount of money for the security and peace of mind it gave to keep them in their own home until serious physical health concerns occurred. I’m not sure who recommended the company, but they were local to my relative and some of my family so were ‘known’ and they were very good. Adult Social Care etc in your Council may be able to advise?
Totally agree that fear of Covid infection is an added extra we could all do without in those circumstances Flowers

This turned up in a subject Facebook group I’m on - petition for use of facemasks in schools.,
