You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom.

No, it's not going to go away by September. Any of it. But I think you're right that we'll be all back in as normal for September opening. As some sort of huge experiment about how children transmit the virus. I hope things are under control enough for us to be back to normal by then, but I think we'll be expected to get back to normal even if everyone else is still social distancing like mad.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/06/2020 00:01

We are predicting 1m rule by Sept and 15 in a class. Day in, day at home. And repeat. And PPA etc on Friday.

I shall feedback on the CPD if you like...

NeurotrashWarrior · 18/06/2020 06:59

My eyes have spotted blended learning.

You what now?

Most importantly, can we make toffee vodka in a blender?

NeurotrashWarrior · 18/06/2020 07:02

Sorry I have a terrible habit of reading backwards. Must try harder.

NeurotrashWarrior · 18/06/2020 07:03

Nobel, so glad to see you back BrewThanks

NeurotrashWarrior · 18/06/2020 07:18

Ok, bolt ins... in sen (I need to add many of my pupils are academically reasonably able, the adhd and asd is the barrier to learning) they're knackered by 1:30 pm due to their learning difficulties and the effort it takes to think. And that's in mainstream too.

I can only see these tutors being effective in primary as targeting small groups, along side and during lit and numeracy lessons, as many schools do anyway (or did till austerity). There's programmes such as first class at numbers and reading recovery that need intense daily or weekly teaching but it actually doesn't help to do it while the rest are doing art etc. But surely all this is further down the line as the SD restrictions prevent you moving outside a bubble?

There's a lot of research that foundation/ option subjects actively improve learning and attainment in maths, science and literacy. Which will be handily ignored.

My favourite one is how drama lessons improve attainment in maths! Quite how, I don't know!

Apart from anything, those are the subjects that children enjoy. Children need to enjoy their learning. But woe betide that happens, eh. That would fuck up the league tables Hmm

ignores the fact that drama probably increases risk of Covid spread for the purposes of my point

NeurotrashWarrior · 18/06/2020 07:25

Gravity

my Y4 son, after Easter the school gave us a pack of CGP books - two maths ones, a reading one, and two spelling and grammar ones.

That's one sensible school. I did that with ds and after attempting to do the new regime the school set up for the last two weeks - basically the full week of 'plans' that the kids in school are getting - I'm reverting to it.

Piggywaspushed · 18/06/2020 07:59

Some of the most vociferous posters are private school parents wanting to stir. They'll go quiet in two weeks.

I am interested how few threads there have been about package holidays and flights but I do suspect one of the reasons many are so riled is the thought of six summer weeks with no summer camps, no holiday abroad, no sending DCs to grandparents.

I could smack those paediatricians in the gob : I don't know about anyone else but when I have taken DS in the past to a paediatrician, they referred him right back to his school. They want schools open because they want MH and obesity to be in our remit. To be blunt.

Piggywaspushed · 18/06/2020 08:01

unions putting their foot down : the horror!!

Piggywaspushed · 18/06/2020 08:08

Like this comment in the ES:

Brilliant thinking from the clever tories. Because it's not like children are in any way stressed by the threat of death and a global pandemic... they will be able to work extra hard for longer and that will prepare them for the Tories zero hour gig economy

Asuitablecat · 18/06/2020 08:14

Yr 11 and yr 13 have intervention after school once a week. Meetings on another night. Most kids do their best to get out of that.

Not only that, but t alll the material o. A recovery curriculum deals with trauma and says kids shouldn't be forced into extra sessions etc.

Asuitablecat · 18/06/2020 08:17

And I won der how many kids who desperate to go to school and worried about their futures will be the same ones who talk all the time, do as little as they can get away with and don't do.hw.

FrippEnos · 18/06/2020 08:19

there are few dedicated anti union posters on threads trying really hard to rewrite history.

Appuskidu · 18/06/2020 08:34

Yup-Fripp! It was all the unions’ fault that the government only brought back selected year groups. Despite the fact the government hadn’t talked to unions at all, before announcing that!

hedgehogger1 · 18/06/2020 08:37

Blocked the psychologists writing one. Didn't take long for it to be all the unions fault with their long lists of demands

ohthegoats · 18/06/2020 09:22

@DrMadelineMaxwellDrMadelineMaxwell

Yes please on the training. Day in day out sounds interesting. Best way for kids to be able to keep going at home. Lots of clearning going on then though.

Bloody love the Daily Mash. It's been one of my windows of sanity throughout.

ohthegoats · 18/06/2020 09:25

Look at this message from my amazing boss:

Since quarantine has been introduced it is possible that some of you may have holidays booked which mean that you would not be able to return to school immediately in September. This may mean that you would need to apply for unpaid special leave for the period of time that covers the quarantine expectation and the start of the school term. Please can I urge you to let me know immediately if this affects you.

So, not CANCEL YOUR HOLIDAYS. Just, let me know if you need to quarantine, it'll be unpaid, but...

Piggywaspushed · 18/06/2020 09:29

It's started now. even on the daily numbers thread. Partly that is to do with a change of OP. It is so tedious.

ohthegoats · 18/06/2020 09:29

Does anyone know of any school where the union input has prevented any further opening?

I mean, we all signed the NEU letter, then sat in on meetings. Bunch of scabs!!

Mistressiggi · 18/06/2020 09:29

It's not unpaid in Scotland incidentally (quarantine)

Piggywaspushed · 18/06/2020 09:30

That Daily Mash forgot ' Because they are in a Union and this is all kinds of wrong'.

noblegiraffe · 18/06/2020 09:37

Does anyone know where I can join this powerful teaching union who is holding the government to ransom?

Maybe they could get us a pay rise?

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/06/2020 09:46

I'd love to be in this all powerful Union. They were involved at a national level in our school because of our "plan" that doesn't particularly follow guidelines (although that's "interpretation" apparently) and no other schools are doing. We opened on Monday, following our "plan" with only very minor tweaks (ie ringing the last kids to reply asking to come in and telling them they're too late and we're full). So the NEU is not the powerful Union it is made out to be. The NASUWT obviously aren't either because they couldn't get our plan changed either. It's almost as if the all powerful teaching unions have no power to speak of. That can't be right, can it?
