You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom.

Fripp got the last word in nicely on the "disgrace" thread. Now 1000 posts so done. Fingers crossed no one will start up again.

Do you think that if the shielded guidance changes at the end of June, that therefore the CV does too, and so CV teachers would go back in July? (I have no idea, just thinking worse case scenario!)

I'd have a bit of an issue with childcare so suddenly! Could I get KW places? I imagine this could be an issue for quite a few.

TheHoneyBadger · 17/06/2020 14:54

Sorry neuro what do you mean by CV teachers?

ineedaholidaynow · 17/06/2020 15:09

Is that clinically vulnerable?

CallmeAngelina · 17/06/2020 15:45

Our feathered friend appears to be suffering from a touch of 'mad avian flu' or something.

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/06/2020 15:58

Yes sorry, CV. It would have a knock on effect of needing KW places.

ohthegoats · 17/06/2020 16:11

I was thinking in the shower this morning about what would have been best. If we'd known it was going to be 3 + months, and had been given a bit of warning - even 3 days instead of 2.

We'd have gone for workbooks for both maths and English (SPAG only). Text books to go with the children who we know have limited tech (so around 25% of our kids). Could have sent an exercise book too.

Then a maths vid a day to suit the work book, a vid talking through the english book answers, an a writing prompt per week - probably from literacy shed. Could have read a class book on kindle cloud reader (so they can see the text too) and then asked questions on it VIPERS style at the end of each chapter.

I'd have spent the last afternoon of school teaching my lots to use an email address that I set up with them. I actually spent it teaching them how to use BBC bitesize, which was probably as useful in the circs.

That's what I think anyway. So, I'm wondering if that's the way we go for September in terms of 'blended learning'. Instead of maths workbooks though, print out of the WhiteRose worksheets.

Hmmm... basically I need to have ideas for September by tomorrow at 3.15.

We can get planned on this right now too.

Piggywaspushed · 17/06/2020 16:19

So, we have had Education Select Committee today and no Big Plan announced (unless union bashing was it)

It is no wonder people are fed up and Drs and so on are shouting at Boris about mental health. I honestly don't think this would have happened so much under more clear and transparent leadership.

I hear parents are barely even whimpering in Spain, Ireland and the US. Because they were just told' back in September and that's that.'

Piggywaspushed · 17/06/2020 16:22

Yes neuro, I think that is what will happen.

A lot of employers are currently being pretty good, (for example, I am home because of DH) but I am sure they are itching to get people in.

The thread where the senior leader wanted all the vulnerable in already spoke volumes about how little understanding and discussion there is around clinical vulnerability. Trouble is that group is huge. 17m or something? I'd have rather seen it narrowed down a lot based on some clinical evidence really.

ohthegoats · 17/06/2020 16:35

It should be, what should the government be doing scientifically or in messaging, to make sure schools are/are considered to be safe to open. And then moaning about that, NOT moaning about how schools are trying to operate within the situation.

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/06/2020 16:37

Yes I expect so. It's just that the domino effect will be tricky. And in fact, just in my own case, me bing back in doesn't hugely help matters. As we have our bubbles sorted and no more room space. It does help planning for sept though.

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/06/2020 16:40

The thread where the senior leader wanted all the vulnerable in already spoke volumes about how little understanding and discussion there is around clinical vulnerability.

Yes, the issue is not just the risk of death, it's long term exacerbation of underlying issues or damage to organs, different in diabetes or asthma but still there. Control is everything but if the infection is bad, control is harder for the individual. I can't remember if I saw that thread or not but seen similar in other fb groups.

Piggywaspushed · 17/06/2020 17:16

Is this doofus on BBC trying to persuade is that the Tories are the party of the teachers and that naughty Keir is a baddie?

Ermmmm...nope.

Appuskidu · 17/06/2020 17:49

So, still no announcement on the great catch up?!

eitak22 · 17/06/2020 17:49

@Piggywaspushed

Is this doofus on BBC trying to persuade is that the Tories are the party of the teachers and that naughty Keir is a baddie?

Ermmmm...nope.

I just saw that. Definitely winning over teachers by saying that, how dare unions want to protect adults and children!
Piggywaspushed · 17/06/2020 17:53

appu. it's clearly not a Thing.

Piggywaspushed · 17/06/2020 17:55

He said this today in parliament:

The prime minister replied: “Yes indeed Mr Speaker, and it’s absolutely crucial that we do that [and] we have a big catch-up plan that my right honourable friend the education secretary is going to be announcing very shortly

ineedaholidaynow · 17/06/2020 18:03

What’s the definition of very shortly, the day before the school holidays start?

GravityFalls · 17/06/2020 18:13

ohthegoats, for my Y4 son, after Easter the school gave us a pack of CGP books - two maths ones, a reading one, and two spelling and grammar ones. And they literally set a page of each a day. Honestly, it’s perfect for us. Takes about an hour maybe, then I bought him a handwriting book, they give extra activities we can do if we want (they’re reading Harry Potter and doing stuff based on that), and we do our own art/craft/project stuff in the afternoon.

Because DD is in Y1 and could be in, they haven’t supplied books for her but I bought a bunch and use the same approach. It’s not a rounded education but it keeps the brain active, handwriting neat, mental maths skills alive. Perfectly good for the time being.

noblegiraffe · 17/06/2020 18:23

Hey everyone. There seems to an increasing suspicion that education and children’s welfare isn’t high on this government’s list of priorities, don’t you think?

Such spectacular incompetence is starting to be noticed.

RigaBalsam · 17/06/2020 18:29

Hello Noble I have missed you and your sensible posts.

MsAwesomeDragon · 17/06/2020 18:40

noble we've missed you! I'm so glad you're here! I've had the same suspicion that this government doesn't much care about children and their education for quite a while. Is anyone important enough to be listened to noticing now?

Piggywaspushed · 17/06/2020 18:44

Marcus Rashford?? Grin

tadjennyp · 17/06/2020 18:52

Hello Noble , nice to see you back. I think they will push all of the blame on the unions. And get away with it. Sad
