You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

In the other staffroom, there is rhubarb & ginger gin, along with tea and coffee.

Good will from the staff or parents?

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/05/2020 07:19

Oh no piggy :(

See this report? I think it's a new statesman rehash. And ... no shit Sherlock!! How has it taken then so long to spot that?!

Coronavirus: Can schools double classes with no extra rooms? www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-52746870

Asuitablecat · 21/05/2020 08:24

We still don't know.how ours is going to.look. Parents have been been.told ks3 probably won be back.until Sept. No.one back.on 1st June. Working out when to bring 10 and 12 for chats..don't think we're teaching.

Staff Angelina.Sad

I think goodwill of many parents is due to be lost a couple of more days/weeks down the line.

Apparently, parents at my school have heard form the head twice.

At DS's school, we hear every night.

TheHoneyBadger · 21/05/2020 08:29

Same boat with our secondary ACat. Ds is over the moon. Feel bad for primary colleagues as secondary approach seems more sane.

IHateCoronavirus · 21/05/2020 08:40

Goodness Piggy I hope a solution can be found for you all to turn the situation around.

WhyNotMe40 · 21/05/2020 08:52

We've been told we will have year 10 back and teaching - but on a rota system which is a change from previous plans. It does look reasonable as sketched out but I have yet to see the details.
My dds are really upset that I've told them they will have to stay home when the school reopens but they don't understand how different it will be. DS will have to go to the childminder.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2020 08:53

It doesn't go quite as far as the NS article though, in typical BBC fashion!

Appuskidu · 21/05/2020 09:03

I’m knackered and just about to fall into bed but had an online meeting today for our borough unions reps which was interesting. I’ll report back some of what was said tomorrow if helpful to anyone?

I’d be interested to know.

I have a nasty feeling it’s just going to come down to people just lumping it and having to go in on June 1st, or deciding it’s unsafe and refusing-but not getting any pay.

pfrench · 21/05/2020 09:06

I think all the stuff about children being upset by new arrangements is bollocks - adults projecting their own feelings about how schools look. Kids are adaptable, they'll be so glad to see some friends that they'll be fine.

I'm glad someone has finally noticed that lots of primary schools are pretty tiny. We're a big Victorinan building with 4 sets of 4-flight stairs. It'll be a one way system. Our playground is not suitable for outdoor teaching, its kpjust a piece of concrete. Meanwhile, my child's school has amazing grounds, they already have lots of outdoor lessons.

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/05/2020 09:11

Pfrench, I know I wish I'd said a bit more of that to a few friends who are thinking along those lines. Will endeavour to do so. Also, staff will make its as lovely as possible, we know this.

MossWalk · 21/05/2020 09:26

I am torn, because children are generally so much tougher than adults anyway, but I think (again) R and Y1 are going into big changes. Mine are going to have to sit at a table and chair all day 😭😭

The older children could have been a much more positive choice.

LolaSmiles · 21/05/2020 09:33

Moss
I agree with you.
Children are resilient, often moreso than adults give them credit for, but it's going to be hard for the youngest children who are old enough to notice that things aren't normal but not old enoughto understand the details.
It must be confusing for a 4 year old to be told they can't see grandma, or go to their friends' houses because we have to keep apart, but it's fine to be in a room with 15 friends at school.

The logical place to start would have been older primary and getting year 10/12 back in some form of blended learning for some subjects.

My friend shared something on Facebook saying 'we can't control nits, what makes you think we can control covid' Grin

WhyNotMe40 · 21/05/2020 09:39

My yr 1 child will find it very difficult to sit at a desk and socially isolate all day. My yr4 child understands better
I personally think in R and yr1 there should be smaller groups and no social distancing.
Mine won't be going back until we have track and trace in place anyway if I can help it. I know we still have community transmission here.

RigaBalsam · 21/05/2020 09:49

So an Mp has said that the TTI system doesn't necessarily need the app to be in place. Here we go. Boris excuse is coming. He will say it is up and ready but it won't be.

Piggy sorey to hear about your place.

Hercule I would be interested if what was said.

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/05/2020 09:50

Yes moss I think that's different, that's more to do with the natural level of those children. Impossible tbh.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2020 10:56

I discovered late yesterday that my local area is a little island of high infected cases in the otherwise dwindling east/ SE. it's just underneath Redcar and Hartlepool and above Runcorn

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2020 10:59

Rochdale, even...

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2020 11:00

I don't want older kids back to school : there is no scientific research at all into kids above 10. not even anything to poo poo.

GravityFalls · 21/05/2020 11:05

The other day I saw something that said confidently about there being no risk for under-14s - so what about years 10 and 12 then?

SansaSnark · 21/05/2020 11:14

So, details of our return to work plan have come out today. The Y10 stuff sounds reasonably sensible- Year group split 5 ways, then into bubbles and teachers giving some support with core subjects, but not actually teaching. They'll get 1 morning a week in school. No transport though, so they won't all be able to come.

The Y12 stuff sounds unworkable. It's a similar theory, in one afternoon each, in bubbles, but my head slipped in that he wants them to see subject specialists, so this will presumably mean that each bubble interacts with more than one adult, and possibly some adults interacting with more than one bubble- which defeats the point of bubbles, to an extent. Also, as obviously they do different subject combinations, this sort of implies mixing bubbles. This really worries me. However, we've been told to await more detail on this, so I will wait and see.

SansaSnark · 21/05/2020 11:41

I think, unfortunately, we are the research.

MsAwesomeDragon · 21/05/2020 11:50

I think, unfortunately, we are the research.
I think you're right!

I've been told our plan today. No bubbles in our school. And unfortunately, it does seem as if we're teaching half classes rather than just supporting remote learning for those who are struggling, which was what I'd hoped for.

SansaSnark · 21/05/2020 12:01

No bubbles in our school

I know the DfE guidance is pretty vague and probably not legally binding, but I would have thought that no bubbles at all and free mixing of students is breaking it?

Apologies if I have misunderstood.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2020 12:11

awesome I am almost certain that will contradict guidelines when they do come out.
