You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are not staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

Ugh! Why is the Scottish and Welsh Science different to English?

In Denmark secondaries are not going back yet.

I only caught half of it piggy.

Mistressiggi · 12/05/2020 09:37

Thanks Piggy. The Denmark experience is only reassuring to us in so much as we operate the same system as they are now doing.

ineedaholidaynow · 12/05/2020 09:39

The scientist on that BBC1 article said children can transmit to adults, or did I hear him wrong?

RigaBalsam · 12/05/2020 09:40

I heard the head say they did too so he must have said that.

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/05/2020 09:45

The bbc was v interesting.

Big difference is that in Denmark she said the yr 7 and 8 staff are teaching the primary lot within their bigger schools.

Earliest years are groups of 5-7. Handwashing every 2 hours. Bought new toys etc.,

And yes the Cambridge guy said they absolutely can transmit the virus, they just may show much lower or no symptoms.

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 12/05/2020 09:46

Interesting that he mentioned the concern about passing it on to parents, but nothing about us teachers Sad

ineedaholidaynow · 12/05/2020 09:51

What he said doesn’t seem to be the same as what a number of reports are saying about transmission from small children. Wonder if that will get picked up and questioned by anyone today in the briefings etc?

FrippEnos · 12/05/2020 09:55

I liked that he called them germ factories or similar.

TheNumberfaker · 12/05/2020 10:03

I’m only a TA and I read the guidelines as soon as they came out last night. What was the point in that HT being there?
It’s seems very much that R/Y1’s emotional well-being childcare for the workers is being prioritised over the actual health of staff and parents!

Appuskidu · 12/05/2020 10:17

They can’t liken us to Denmark if they aren’t going back 15 to a class as it’s not the same.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 12/05/2020 10:18

I saw a clip of S Korea. There were guys in haz mats spraying disinfectant all over classrooms.

In my school they managed to clean the floor but not the edges.

FrippEnos · 12/05/2020 10:23

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

and in some places the kids before they enter the school.

Piggywaspushed · 12/05/2020 10:24

It was all quite interesting. I am afraid I despair for our schools if the English head was typical!

the Danish system seemed very organised and we also should remember their transmission and infection rates are so low and the track and trace is massively inferior here.
The virologist is not a gov scientist so will be ignored and possibly bumped off

But, yes, he only thought of parents.

Victoria Derbyshire seemed to care the most!

ineedaholidaynow · 12/05/2020 10:25

I saw that clip in S Korea, and then also saw another clip of a teacher in England with anti bac spray and a cloth!

minisoksmakehardwork · 12/05/2020 10:28

I have checked my emails today and there is nothing about our secondary returning any time soon. Although the day the announcement was made, there as an email sent out detailing further online resources which are available so I am optimistic that our SLT are not rushing into this. They and DD1's secondary have posted across all social media that they will open when they have a safe environment for pupils and staff. Younger DC's primary head has sent out a letter saying they are looking at the guidance and will share with us when they have a plan to move forward. I know the primary school certainly has a number of parents who won't send their children in unless they absolutely have no choice - they are very vocal on SM about not sending their children back until there is a vaccine etc. Whether reality bears this out or not but I suspect the majority are in a position where someone can be at home with the children.

I am in tomorrow so it will be interesting to see what comes up.

CallmeAngelina · 12/05/2020 10:33

How come it's not safe for me to have my hair cut until July at the very earliest, but it's apparently fine to go and mingle at close quarters with dozens of small children?

Appuskidu · 12/05/2020 10:39

I missed the headteacher talking as I was out...queuing 2m apart from other people at the supermarket. It will be a barrel of laughs having to do that to get our food after a full week of being sneezed and coughed on by a class of 15 in June.

Who the hell was the head who was being interviewed? That’s shameful they hadn’t read the guidance. How embarrassing.

ChloeDecker · 12/05/2020 10:42

Quite CallmeAngelina

I can’t quite believe that govt have actually put in print, that all advice given to everyone else, such as social distancing, wearing masks in busy places and cleanliness is not applicable in schools because basically, they have no answer/solution to it and want to wash their hands of it (pun definitely intended). It’s so brazen yet still many don’t give a shit. I’m in school tomorrow and been advised to stand side by side to kids/staff rather than face to face. What fresh hell is this!?

GravityFalls · 12/05/2020 10:49

I’m so worried about the y12 thing because as far as I can see, depending on how SLT interpret it, I could be basically in full-time teaching small groups all day long (each Y12 class I have would need to be split in two, making 6 groups...) or it could mean I don’t have to go in at all.

We have quite good union representation but also some real keenies who have no life outside work and will be gagging to suck up by making a big show of how happy they are to come in and how they can’t wait and it’s all for the students, of course (not for their own egos/boredom). Meanwhile those of us facing having to sling our own children back into school before we want to, as well as potentially travelling a long distance to do something we can do as well, if not better, from home, will he looked on as shirkers. Well, I hope it doesn’t come to that. But based on previous experience of educational settings, there’s a good chance it will.

FrippEnos · 12/05/2020 10:52

Appuskidu

I'm not sure that non teachers get the irony of having to cover up for others benefit after you have been put at risk by having to teach their children with no safety measures in place.

RigaBalsam · 12/05/2020 11:07

We are low risk according to the wise ine on another thread. Stop moaning.

Honestly it worries me how some peoples brains work. Selecting ' the Science' that suits them.

Appuskidu · 12/05/2020 11:10

We really need something from the unions today.

The NEU told staff not to discuss their availability with SLT as there wasn’t enough information to go on, but the guidelines have been released now, so something more has to be said.

CallmeAngelina · 12/05/2020 11:16

At last!!! MNHQ have finally removed the goady "teachers' pay" thread, but once again, because the OP has the answer to her question and it's "now" descending into grief. I reported that thread for being goady mid-evening last night, when mods were still about (because they replied to me about something else) and they still let it stand.

FrippEnos · 12/05/2020 11:19

CallmeAngelina

Makes you wonder how they can justify asking for money.

WhyNotMe40 · 12/05/2020 11:22

According to the stats we will be low risk right up to the point where loads of us have died.
Personally I don't want to be one of those to prove the argument.
