So continuing on from our boycott/flowers we need to continue to defend our profession. This is teacher/school staff chat - if you do not fall into that category please start you own thread elsewhere.

The school itself is 1500 so not huge huge cat but we start at year 9 so each year group is very large.

DreamingofBrie · 29/04/2020 09:26

Morning everyone [tea]. Hope everyone has a good day today.

DreamingofBrie · 29/04/2020 09:27

Oops Brew.

Piggywaspushed · 29/04/2020 09:28

Oh yes , you have to do Brew not [tea]. Someone at MN is obviously Northern!

bettybattenburg · 29/04/2020 09:51

Even the thought of wearing a mask makes me a bit panicky. Can't bear feeling trapped. Even polo necks make me suffocate.

I'm the same, there is no way I'd be able to cope with wearing one.

This would be my preferred tea picture instead of the bucket I usually have

I bought an Areopress, changed my life! 😂 BrewBrewBrew

Sureitwillbegrand · 29/04/2020 09:54

Aero press 🙄

Piggywaspushed · 29/04/2020 10:09

Carrie Symonds appears to have hijacked DS1's birthday. Humbug. (Is this quite early?)

Kate and William got married on his birthday too.

bettybattenburg · 29/04/2020 10:23

I think we need reminding each year of @Piggywaspushed son's birthday so we can prepare for a momentous occasion.
It's also the date of the Mutiny on the Bounty, the liberation of Dachau and the day that Joan of Arc relieved Orleans. Your DS should go far Piggy

Piggywaspushed · 29/04/2020 10:46

Wow, those are momentous things ,and far more important!

I chose his name because it basically means 'freedom fighter' so this seems apt betty!

noblegiraffe · 29/04/2020 10:50

At least it’s not tomorrow, would be slightly overshadowed by Captain Tom!

Appuskidu · 29/04/2020 10:50

I’m going to post flowers on here rather than engage in the new ‘I’m not bashing teachers, but...’ thread on AIBU Angry.

Apart from a few arseholes idiots, it seems at the moment that there are quite a few parents coming in to defend teachers.

I am ashamed to say that I have bitten and responded.

My report would read 'must do better' :)

Piggywaspushed · 29/04/2020 11:18

We vaguely know Captain Tom!

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/04/2020 11:19

Morning all.

Clearly eyed as my silly body had me awake at 2:30.

I'm employing a task reward task reward approach with ds who is collapsing dramatically at the sniff of literacy. Workbooks are going to be the way forward.

I'm annoyed with the media for stirring up worry re progress. Honestly, these kids will need a relaxed, holistic approach when they eventually go back.

From what many friends are saying, many children are finding the home learning especially challenging this week.

Happy birthday piggy's son!

Piggywaspushed · 29/04/2020 11:19

The worst teacher bashers are always claim to be nurses. Which makes me very sad.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/04/2020 11:19

*bleary eyed

TheHoneyBadger · 29/04/2020 11:35

Not a fan of the comparison of teachers and nurses. Nurses did choose to work with and were trained to manage health risks and infection control etc. I greatly appreciate nurses and wish we had them in schools along with social workers and camhs workers and ebd specialists because it would benefit the kids who need that specialist support and free us up a little to do the job we signed up for.

We have accepted so much being piled onto schools without the funding, specialists and facilities to support it but there has to be a line somewhere surely?

I’m another who would likely have an asthma attack and/or a panic attack wearing a mask for long. If I try to hold my board marker in my mouth whilst using my hands for something else I get a gag reflex. Weird I know.

I also can only imagine the issues of classroom management with some of my more lively groups if wearing masks.

Anyway. Thanks for the new thread. Oh and no it’s not bad if you don’t miss school. All this we miss it so much it’s a calling reminds me of the dancing nurses etc. It’s like see they’re not real professionals and we don’t have to pay them properly or keep them safe because they love it! It’s not a skilled job just a calling for people who are soft in the head

tadjennyp · 29/04/2020 11:36

Happy birthday sonofpiggy.
How do you make videos? I experimented with zoom the other day but not convinced that was right. I have been doing a voiceover on my PowerPoints, but next week we are setting electronic homework so I won't even have that to do.
I feel deflated after the grades. No asking the students how they did in the exam, no proper goodbye. 😩

Appuskidu · 29/04/2020 11:40

From that express article...

But despite Government’s attempts to prevent education from being majorly disrupted, former Ofsted Chief Inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw warned pupils could have to repeat the academic year or risk falling behind.

Mr Whilshaw said: "The Government's going to have to get into a negotiation with the teacher professional associations to look at this, to say we missed a huge amount of school.

"There are going to be adverse consequences to this, particularly for disadvantaged children.

"We're considering bringing in schools over weekend periods, holiday periods or extending the school a day.

"That means staff will have to be paid to come in during those periods."

Ok?! Why is the former head of Ofsted saying things like, ‘we’re considering bringing in schools over weekend periods, holiday periods or extending the school day’?

Why is he ‘considering’ anything? Is he an MP?

Have I misunderstood?!

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/04/2020 11:49

It won't happen, weekend thing. Kids need to reclaim their old lives eg going to the park etc. What ever other things reopen will need to be accessed by them.

Kids aren't just empty vessels to be filled!!!

MrsMime · 29/04/2020 11:51

Good morning (just)
Been lurking a bit of late but felt compelled to flower the AIBU thread.
Exhausted as been at laptop since 7am (OH on early shifts) but glad to know we're still not working hard according to some Confused

SallyLovesCheese · 29/04/2020 11:56

Happy birthday to Piggy's son! I hope he has a good day Cake

keiratwiceknightly I'm hearing impaired, too, it would make life a nightmare, wouldn't it? I worry they'll make masks if you leave your house mandatory, then I'd have no idea what anyone was saying when I went to the shop or at work. Very depressing.

Sureitwillbegrand I love my Aero Press! Going to make one right now Grin

Piggywaspushed · 29/04/2020 11:57

I pay no attention to Wilshaw. Professional bully.

I find it fascinating how many people are now wailing ' but the disadvantaged? Who will think of the poor?' When they didn't give a flying fuck at election time.
