Do parents thank you after residentials?

I've been thinking about this, since returning from a residential last Friday.

Three parents thanked me.

I'm not expecting all out gratitude, but I was quite taken aback by our return in general. They all stood in the path to the main school entrance, two parents and a childminder helped us get the luggage off the coach while the rest watched, and nobody moved aside without being asked.

It's a very upper middle class school - wondering if that means the parents are much more 'entitled' feeling than others?

It was cancelled forever too :(

So now the Y6es go to....Bristol. Not Brittany. And no more of them go than who used to go to France.

Parents like him were one of the reasons I left teaching.

That is bizarre Hester. Surely there were more disgruntled parents after it was cancelled than the one father who was disgruntled before it was cancelled.

OK, the next year's France trip was cancelled.

That was the year I left teaching for good. But I did do supply there for a bit so was kept in the loop.

And he was the Chair of Governors' son. Explains it more.

Pico2 · 02/10/2014 22:49

I'm amazed that anyone with 8 children would have time to be a school governor. But that does explain it. It's still shit though.

Hester - French exchanged cancelled at my old school for similar reasons. French teacher put lots of effort into it had run for years. One parent made a right old fuss one year because the host family had a dog or something relatively minor. Parent so rude and aggressive teacher so pissed off and demoralised she didn't run the exchange again so all kids in future years missed out on great trip.

HesterShaw · 02/10/2014 22:50

No, he (the dad) was the Chair of Governors' son. Therefore the Chair was the grandfather of the said eight children. See?

Shockers · 02/10/2014 22:51

Wasn't there a fund for fertile fathers' offspring trips Hester?

We have a fund at our school, but to name the fund would out me (amongst my colleagues Wink).

Mormon Lots of very large families.

pearpotter · 03/10/2014 13:19

pear Collectivism is not always about doing what is best for the greater good though. Protecting minorities is important too.

The greater good includes minorities. It isn't a direct synonym for "the majority of people".

You know, I wish our school was like one of these Mumsnet schools where the governors and the PTA have so much power and the Chairs of those bodies even more. I would have such a lovely time, and so would my children........
