Misogynist Jeremy Clarkson gets his comeuppance… but what can be done about the thousands of other Meghan/confident-woman haters?

Have you noticed how genuine good news such as the above regarding Meghan often gets overlooked, while haters fall over themselves to create content from every tidbit non-event which can be spun as bad news? The Meghannilation pile-ons are ferocious and unrelenting, seeking to destroy the woman and perhaps end her life, while making money from clicks and views along the way. Every has-been and non-entity seeking to raise their sagging or non-existent profile (Mia Farrow? Chris Rock? Millie Mackintosh? random Spotify exec? Z-list YouTuber?) just has to find some creative insult for Meghan like “grifter”, and it’s days of front pages guaranteed. And not just in the UK’s tabloids, the broadsheets frequently jump in on it too. JC (not Jesus Christ)’s one article got slapped down, no small thanks to 25000+ principled residents of our nation who sent complaints to IPSO, the 64 cross-party MPs who signed a letter of protest, and the two charities who were signatories to the official IPSO complaint. At least there’s a shred of decency, perhaps even empathy, left in public discourse in the UK. Many celebrities get roasted in the British press, but the level of obsessive hatred Meghan faces is unprecedented – the stuff of PhD’s on parallels between media and online mobbing today and public floggings and executions of ancient Rome or medieval times – in that respect JC was inadvertently on to something: Meghan is already being paraded in the streets and excrement thrown at her, only virtually.

Anyway so one misogynist and the media outlet supporting him get their knuckles rapped, but what about the hordes of other armchair tormentors, who from the darkness of their bedrooms bombard the world (well, mostly the UK) with hundreds, perhaps THOUSANDS of Meg-hating articles, blogs, vlogs, Twitter rants, Facebook posts, YouTube or TikTok videos EVERY SINGLE WEEK? The woman has barely said a word or shown her face in public in the past year, yet you’d think it’s her picture on the front pages every week in a different costume, tennis whites, camouflage, bee-keeping suit… (and no doubt soon, space-suit?)

It’s impossible for a body like IPSO to regulate so many haters and platforms they use, yet the impact such intense public vilification has on a person is equivalent to JC’s article to the power of six. What can restore some form of respect for the truth, and basic empathy for a fellow human being and mother, who has committed no crime or spent no time befriending paedophiles?

[Title of thread edited to say Jeremy Clarkson, not Jeremy Clarke]

Fantastic post from you OP

I need to re-read and think about this. It's like pushing water uphill isn't it...

IPSO is clearly not fit for purpose

I'm going to spend some time thinking about your post, food for thought...

Endless juvenile name calling ✅

ILikeDinosaurs · 03/07/2023 16:01

@Roussette the essays people will write just to justify every single piece of slander against H&M! Like H&M are always 100% wrong and every single person who insults them must be 100% right and not only that we must bow down to how amazing that nobody is. None of us knew who this man was before and now we're supposed to be impressed by his podcast career. 😂 He's destroyed his reputation now anyway, why would anyone respect a so-called businessman who calls people names because a deal ended?

Roussette · 03/07/2023 16:14

@ILikeDinosaurs
I can't get my head round it at all. It's so weird on here
Anyone who is involved with Meghan or shows any sort of positivity towards her, must be dragged down insulted and belittled
Anyone who criticises Meghan must be lauded and revered. Even if they make a complete arse of themselves and look stupid and unprofessional in their criticism
Tis law 😂

IPSO is like that by design: if all you had to do was assemble 20k people then it would be used on all sides to suppress anything, like a war of attrition. The most effective way of combating misogyny is to not pay for the media (which includes clicking and viewing the pages online, which earns ad revenue).

CallieQ · 03/07/2023 16:48

Most people aren't even interested

Advice Part 2: never hate-share an article, you will make them more money than you’ll lose them (I worked at a newspaper a million years ago lol)

Jeremy Clarkson isn’t getting any sort of comeuppance. His column was in the Sunday Times today and will continue. His TV programmes are continuing. He will continue to lead his lovely life on his lovely farm with his lovely girlfriend and continue to write and say goady things, though he may be a tiny tiny bit more circumspect in future.

The Sun will publish an apology and that’ll be the end of it, except on here where it will get mentioned at least once on every thread about the Sussexes.

Indeed. I was slightly confused by the jubilant tone asserting he’s received his comeuppance. As if anything has changed for him or he gives two toots for this ruling 😁

Actually just started watching “Clarkson’s Farm” with ds. Surprised at how much more likeable he is in this, away from the competitive school boy humour of TG & TGT, both of which I do enjoy though.

@TallerSally thank you for being open to a different perspective.

Your list of actions we could take is good, but I wouldn’t link it to Meghan specifically. We need to see this level of passion for the day to day representation of women in media, advertising and communications so that the systemic biases that have enabled the misogynistic abuse of Meghan are diminished if not erased and that a new generation of consumers and journalists operate in a different environment.

I remember when Theresa May became PM and held her first meeting with Nicola Sturgeon, the DM front page had a photo of them with the headline ‘The Battle of the Legs’. Abysmal.

The true test for most activism is if you can stand behind the same principles for the people you do not like. I am not sure Meghan herself would benefit from becoming the poster child for a sexism in media campaign - because she is a controversial figure and this will only open her up to more unfair scrutiny and abusive coverage. And, as I said earlier, because a lot of her supporters are guilty of the same against other women in the RF. Broader strokes are needed and I can only hope people with your ‘fire’ can take up the challenge.

I’m afraid in all sorts of industries top executives will say worse about others in the sector, including clients and partners. That tends to do fuck all to their reputation, especially if they’re men.

It’s the level of coverage that’s making this unusual. Otherwise it’s just one work relationship that did not work out where one of the parties has a big mouth. We’ve all come across this. No point trying to elevate it to any other level.

But usually it's done privately to other colleagues that you work with. We all have a rant. But most people in business don't have a tantrum in public, garnering global media attention, do they? Not sure what he was hoping to achieve, but it comes across as childish and, frankly, abusive.

Yes to both comments. While it is not unusual for people in top positions to discuss colleagues or former colleagues, you usually have to be quite careful where and to whom you say things to. It would affect a lot of peoples careers but these billionaire tech bro dudes can often get away with it for sure, it will affect who wants to work with them though. Even if my DH fires someone he doesn't go around bad mouthing them to anyone! It not only reflects poorly on him but it also opens him up to possible claims- - Elon is being sued by a lot of former employees. If Simmons was speaking about employees, it would be discussed differently.

Particularly agree with this.

Great thread OP.

I did wonder about what can be done regarding the hateful keyboard warriors. Currently, we do have a police force monitoring things like grooming, child abuse, terrorism etc. More serious issues no doubt. But I do wonder if too much hate that winds other people up to take action should not be looked at as well. Remember how Trump wound up his supporters to storm White House.

I think that without wasting too much resources, if someone is seen to be fixated on one person/couple with unjustifiable hate, a quick email/ knock on the door/ letter would help (the case of the McCain's for example). If anything it would help that person's mh too.

For example, I can see a situation where people could whistle blow that this particular site/ or poster is has so much hate on this individual -who has indeed had credible threats and convictions of such, could you check? If a lot of reports come in, maybe someone could take a quick look. But as things stand, it's evidently and obviously true that this is happening in the press, and no one has even bothered.

I remember the met head, being asked if any action would be taken against

Lets face it, the police do tend to go heavy-handed for nothing nowadays (out of the blue stop and search etc.)

PrincessTigger · 04/07/2023 11:23

People sometimes go overboard with criticising Meghan but you want to set the police on them? 🤯

Gettingbysomehow · 04/07/2023 11:25

Clarkson is a massive fat misogynistic pig and thats being unfair to pigs. I hope he gets his comeuppance.
I think the Meghan Harry hate campaign is shameful.

Totally agree. It’s incredible the sycophancy for this woman. Maybe the police should set up a special investigation unit.

Maybe if you had endless articles, hate fuelled rants, SM attacks, 27 articles in one paper in 24 hours about you....you might feel different.
Sycophancy is nothing to do with it

I’m more concerned about women in public service who get death threats. Such as Diane Abbott.

@MrsMaxDeWinter You must not be as old as me, but it was reported back in the day that Charles liked Camilla on top so he could bury his head in her boobs. So no, Meghan is not the only royal woman whose privacy has been horrifically violated, nor is Meghan the only royal woman whose sexual prowess has been discussed in the media. Meghan has never suffered the degree of vitriol aimed at Camilla, not even close. The difference is Camilla kept her mouth shut and Meghan claims victimhood status every time she perceives a violation.

Good god, I have never heard that ever. I now feel a bit icky...

Where on earth was that said and when

And sorry it does not compare to the vile long diatribe by JC. It wasn't just one sentence, it was a long hate filled rant

Meghan is subjected to a million dollar hate industry. Camilla wasn't

P.s. Meghan hasn't said anything much all year and yet the hate filled bandwagon still rolls on. Daily

And who can forget the Prince of Pegging insult aimed at PW. But that’s all fine and a bit of a larf
