The royal family

Harry & Meghan - what does the future hold?

I’m not really sure whether I can articulate this very well, but I’ll give it my best shot.

I think I support a route for Harry and Meghan to find a route back into the fold of the royal family, and find that odd and conflicting given everything that has happened.

I found the Oprah interview, the freedom flight, the Spare revelations awful. It felt really unpleasant the way Meghan came into the royal family, was active for so little time and then criticised it all so publicly and in a way that seemed a bit of a cultural miss (I’m not referring to the racism allegations here). I think that her American mindset perhaps did not fully understand the tacit consent nature of the royal family and the constitutional delicacies with which the titles are held. This is why it makes commercialisation and speaking at round tables about ‘power’, jarring.

However, despite ALL of this this, I see two human beings. One man who has grown up, without any consent, in a strange institution, in the glare of the spotless, completely traumatised by the death of his mother in horrendous circumstances when he was a young boy. A veteran too. Although not comparable to this, Meghan clearly has also had a dysfunctional childhood too. These latest revelations around her father mean that from the outside, none of us really know what’s going on.

I would like them all to just be happy. I feel like collectively it would be awesome as a nation if we could give the family the framework to sort it all out by just saying ‘look, H&M, you did some crazy shit, it was hugely damaging and cruel. But we understand that you guys have gone through crap too. Let’s look forward- try and sort it out’.

I’d honestly like to be done with the drama and for everyone to just get on. Does anyone else feel like this? I know it doesn’t really work like this in practice, I’m just trying to get across how I’m feeling.

Please also try and be a bit kind in your responses. I think this is coming from a place where everything just feels really negative/heavy in life at the moment and the need for some positivity,

Erm? The culture of the royal family, which Meghan willingly married into.

Do you think Harry thought it was ignorant to follow the protocol?

One family’s odd behaviour does not constitute a culture.

My family always puts a pineapple ring on top of the gammon on our Sunday dinner. I’ve had partners who think this is ridiculous. They are not insulting a culture Grin.

Just take a look at the inane look on her face - it tells you all you need to know.

Could I also remind you about Sarah, Duchess of York? Whilst visiting the USA she 'knighted' a friend's dog with a dinner knife. Look how that ended!

We expect high standards from representatives of our country and M doesn't seem to understand how to behave respectfully.

oh yes Fergie I had forgotten about her - she's probably potless and will need to bark for her supper and knight assorted creatures to keep herself in clover down the line.

The way people talk about them...'no rehabiliation' etc. 😂 They're not Fred and Rose West.

You stance on this is obtuse. The Royal family is an institution. Like all institutions, it has its own customs. Curtsying is one.

The royal family isn’t a culture though and mocking curtsying isn’t insulting a culture.

Meghan in hindsight was mad to marry into this monarchy something I assume she knows now all too well. But the Wales children will go through hell if they ever decide to go to University. I can't see in the world of mobile phones and big money for media that they will be able to live any sort of normal life. It's cruel now at least in the old times they could do pretend jobs and appear useful unnoticed by most.

I doubt that Meghan regrets marrying into the Royal family. Had she not done so, she wouldn't have achieved global recognition or had 29 million people watching her marry a Prince in a Givenchy gown.

🤣🤣🤣

What about older people who were her contemporaries in the war for example? You must have had your head under a rock.

Edited

There weren’t many older people of the Queen’s age left!

My own grandmother did not like the Queen. Older people don’t all think the same way.

Errrr . . . William, Beatrice & Eugenie all seem to have managed very well. And Lady Louise has just graduated and didn't seem to have any issues

I don't know why the Wales children will "go through hell"

Quite - it's a healthy part of British culture to take the piss out of mock serious people.

Every family has a culture.

Did your partners go in television and mock your family pineapple rings?

I note you used past tense. “Had”

Was she mocking herself when she had someone introduce her to an empty room?

Took a made up surname and admonished a friend for not using it?

I have no idea what either of these instances were.

She’s not representing our country though.

"the spectacle of the Netflix curtsey" - have I just gone back in time through some worm hole to the 19th century ? There are horrors I know little of my universe !

I don't mean to be rude but a great many of your posts are somewhat incomprehensible.

Try not to take the criticism of Meghan Markle so personally, she wouldn't trouble herself about you if you were dying in the street at her feet. Other than to check for cameras and consider the optics.

Have you seen the opinion polls? Meghan and Harry - c.20% approval rating. William and Catherine - c.80%.

The royal family is an institution that makes up the British culture. QE2 as Queen represented the country. We have a constitutional monarchy.

Are you actually from the UK and if so have you ever taken an interest in how your country is run?

cornflakecrunchie · 24/10/2026 15:26

Isn't there a vacancy for the Governor of the Bahamas?
It's how we got rid of the Duke of Windsor.. ;-)

Icecreamisthebest · 24/10/2026 15:26

I’d like everyone involved to be happy, not just H and M.

I can’t see a reconciliation. H and M seem to thrive on chaos and drama. I know people like that. I don’t dislike them but they are not people I would choose to spend time with. That’s not how I want to live my life.

If they want to stay in the UK I think they should live a quiet life and focus on raising their children and finding something worthwhile and fulfilling to do with their time than does not look semi royal. Sadly I can’t see them coming to that conclusion. The need for drama is too strong. I also think they will change their minds about how to live their lives every few years And I think W and C have the measure of them.

Ooh you should read it. Quite funny!

https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/film-tv/a69289143/meghan-markle-cover-story-interview-2025/

At the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles: Someone announced, “The Duchess of Sussex,” as she arrived in a golf cart to meet a group of girls.
At a New York City brownstone: A house manager announced, “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,” when the journalist arrived, even though the writer noted that only the two of them appeared to be in the house.

The name thing was on “With Love Meghan” when Mindy Kaling said something about no one believing Meghan Markle would eat Jack in the Box. Meghan got all faux giggly to hide her offense “You know I’m Sussex now!”
Mindy looked like she’d been smacked.

After years of being subsumed by other people’s narratives, she's ready to author her own next chapter

She didn’t mock them. She mocked how low she curtsied the first time she did it.

Yes, had. I didn’t leave them due to their objection to pineapple.

So what? They don’t need anyone’s approval. Most people will not think about them at all.

Dollymylove · 24/10/2026 15:29

Charles is pushing 80 and clearly isn't a well man. If H&M want a full reconciliation they need to get on with it because once William claims the throne i doubt he will tolerate any tantrums
