Poor Harry. As if his week hasn’t been bad enough he has now had to watch his brother appearing on the best talk show , holding his own, looking comfortable and relaxed, keeping up with the banter, making half decent jokes, telling stories against himself with humour.

Makes Harry’s attempt at tv chatting seem even more uncomfortable.

“Call me William” versus “I am a prince.”

That didn’t happen and it had been proven it was a lie put about by someone close the Meghan.

Where is that proven? - if so it resolves the point!

I've no idea why she curtseyed! The others didn't cutsey or bow, but I think she was a wee bit under the influence.

Curtseying is optional. One can choose not to curtsey, but it's fine that Hannah Waddingham curtsied. I would also curtesy to the Prince of Wales - simply my choice.

Of course. Personal choice.

Since the Glorious Revolution, the constitutional monarchy has only continued to exist at the invitation of Parliament. Its powers are all predicated on the ability of MPs, who represent us in Parliament, to remove them from office, which is in turn predicated on our ability to remove MPs from parliament. It’s a cascade of consent to govern from the grassroots up. On paper, at any rate. If a monarch ever used any of its theoretical powers, it would almost certainly be the last day we had a monarchy. Instead, what the monarchy does is turn the PM into a civil servant by giving us an apolitical head of state (so we don’t have to have some one like Trump as our representative on the world stage). And the day to day job of the core royal family is to undertake soft power tasks like receive foreign heads of state and visit the vulnerable. Their ‘engagements’ are largely decided for them by Whitehall (the permanent civil service) on behalf of Parliament. Their engament with relatives who don’t toe the line is also a potentially diplomatic or domestic political issue, so is decided for them

All very well except MPs weren’t able to do a good job of representing us in Parliament as was evident when they tried to seek parliamentary time to discuss AMW which was only eventually offered very grudgingly and fleetingly.

Our unwritten constitution relies on the people in power being well intentioned, honest and law abiding but they are nit scrutinised sufficiently well to ensure that this is the case.

How would the above system have worked if Prince Charles had died in a ski avalanche or polo accident do you think, and AMW became monarch, given that the Institution had covered up his nefarious activities whilst acting as trade envoy for over a decade?

I think, rather like when the Nepali royal family were murdered and the odious uncle became king for a short time, we wouldn’t be a monarchy any more. The whole thing only hangs on for as long as reasonable people inherit the crown. It is anachronistic, but for as long as that continues, it works. But that wasn’t the point of my comment. The purpose was to point out how little freedom they have, even over family relations. When there is arguably a public interest dimension, they are expected to take the advice of senior civil servants, who essentially decide for them. They have to find acceptable ways of being themselves within those confines. I don’t envy them and I think William and Catherine manage that very well, because they approach it like a job, not an entitlement. Andrew MW was / is entitled. He doesn’t seem to get that it’s not the 19th century any more. He needed to earn deference and he failed spectacularly. Consequently, he has been shamed publicly and banished.

She was also desperate to prove how chummy she was with William and kept interrupting so all the attention was on her.

Actually, I thought she was quite lively and engaging, which worked well on a live talk show. Cate Blanchett was more serious and they balanced each other out well.

Loved PW.

I thought Hannah W was awful.
She kept interrupting questions aimed at PW and looked as if she was a bit tipsy. 'All about her' came to mind. Wish someone could have told her to tone it down.
Whereas CB was far more restrained.

Completely agree, I have a colleague like HW - annoying.

Thought everyone came across very well apart from HW.

He's not 'a sport', he's getting in there, gaining public support so his positioned is secured! His father is old and unwell and he needs to insinuate himself now before the debate about the worth of the monarchy begins.

Exactly. Been training for this his whole life, I'd expect him to do it well, but it isn't a given.

Yes Erskine-may pretty much forbids discussing issue relating to the monarchy within Parliament that needs to change and change fast.

Are you sure that he has ended his affair with Rose?

What's your full and considered view on this question?

I assume you have one, since you asked.

These costs will still apply when we return to being a republic, but at least we’ll have a choice in the individual concerned.

This made me giggle. “Remember that time, when we were a republic?”

I thought that had been firmly established, but boy, do the Sussex Squad love to keep it going.

Anyone who repeats this does it out of pure spite. They must be sad sacks.

There are similar rumours about H and M, but I don't go into those on hear because:

  • I'm not a spiteful saddo
  • they are rumours
  • what business are they of anyone else but H & M anyway?
CoffeeCantata · 24/10/2026 12:41

OliveMyLove · 24/10/2026 12:37

When the guy what told everyone admitted he made it up?

He made it up after spending a weekend at Soho House where Meghan was also staying. She was pissed off because, not yet engaged to H, she hadn't been invited to a state banquet or similar that weekend. Harry had instead been seated next to Rose Hanbury, and we can only surmise that M was typically eaten up with jealousy and helped cook up a nasty rumour to take revenge on both Rose and M's perceived rival, Catherine.

But hey - why let the truth get in the way of a nasty story?

How long after the pitiful complaint “Catherine didn’t take me shopping” printed by a Toronto Gossip columnist was this?

fridaynightzzz · 24/10/2026 12:49

I’m just watching it. He sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, he’s been good humoured with everyone. I’ve seen much more awkward guests in the past, I wouldn’t say this is his comfort zone at all and he held his own.

Quite!

But in a way, it's no surprise this rubbish is being brought up yet again - the SS are truly desperate now, and it shows from the pathetic posts on here.

The Irish are much more sensible politically - i very much doubt the UK public would be voting for presidents with backgrounds in human rights, civil liberties, social justice, poets, academics, lawyers, I just can’t see it here. Agree the lottery of the royal family is bonkers but inclined to stick with them for one last generation if they’re doing a decent job for diplomacy, tourism, and national pride for some.

And whatever you think of the monarchy, quite honestly we've got bigger problems just now.

To dismantle the system would be comparable to the Brexit disaster: 10 years of public consultation, public information/education on the different options, re-jigging the constitution, electing a president etc etc.

It wouldn't happen overnight and honestly, I don't think the British public care enough.

I'm old, but I really do think the population has been dumbed down. Far fewer people now take an interest in politics or current affairs and the political climate here, as elsewhere, is in danger of tipping over into dangerour populism: simple answers to complicated questions. Personally I dread to think who might be chosen as our HoS. KC is doing a cracking job so let him get on with it.

I think constitutional deconstruction is the last thing we need at the moment, with the govt advising us to prep for wartime-style emergencies and shortages.

Exactly. Been training for this his whole life, I'd expect him to do it well, but it isn't a given.

I haven’t watched it but I saw a headline that he made a ‘joke’ about an elderly man mixing him up with Prince the singer. Really?? Does anyone else feel that did not happen ?

I know William will have been rehearsed within an inch of his life for this but this story felt like the result of a PR ‘let’s make William look less pompous’ polished up anecdote.

Obviously the man couldn’t have been looking at William as the real Prince couldn’t have looked more different. So he was saying this without looking at William ?
Ok.
But an elderly man expecting Prince? It’s mainly women who liked Prince. But mocking an elderly woman- elderly women being his main support demographic- wouldn’t look good so…

Maybe it did happen. Who knows. The whole story just struck me as a bit odd.
I know all celebrities polish anecdotes before chat shows of course they do - they are entertainers . We have always been told that it is crass when ‘royals’ go on chat shows as they are above all that .

Maybe I’ve been side eyeing the Windsors and their PR too long.

Anyway Earthshot is greenwashing for super polluter William .
