Poor Harry. As if his week hasn’t been bad enough he has now had to watch his brother appearing on the best talk show , holding his own, looking comfortable and relaxed, keeping up with the banter, making half decent jokes, telling stories against himself with humour.

Makes Harry’s attempt at tv chatting seem even more uncomfortable.

“Call me William” versus “I am a prince.”

And then we can have a president, like America. Because that’s going really well for them.

Any elected Head of State we have would be largely ceremonial and would not be remotely like anything they have in the USA, whose President is ceremonial and head of the government. The two systems are not comparable.

The former system has worked well for the Republic of Ireland and could work well for us.

People always say President Boris, or President Trump, but what about President Attenborough, President Tim Peake or President Helen Sharman, or President Brenda Hale, or President Tanni Grey-Thompson?

These costs will still apply when we return to being a republic, but at least we’ll have a choice in the individual concerned.

Ugh, no thanks. If there's a vote, judging by the SCD débâcle we'd end up with Rylan!
I mean, I don't kowtow to them but I think the late Queen genuinely wanted to serve the country, and William has been born into that expectation.

You are not meant to mention the

3 dc,
fleet of Range Rovers
holidays
private/military transport
staff
etc

😆😆

You can mention whatever you want, but if you're going to express an opinion perhaps it would be better to inform yourself about what you're on about.

The Earthshot Prize isn't about telling people what they can and cannot do. It's not about imposing zero emissions targets. It's about encouraging people to find practical solutions that will protect the environment through innovation and invention.

Melancholyflower · 24/10/2026 10:46

I clicked on this thread as it came up in active, without realising it's on the royal family board.
I think most people who watched the GN show will have agreed that he came across well and that it was a reasonably entertaining episode. That's where it ends for most of us, as we are not over invested in every aspect of the RF's lives.

Kings have always had affairs and remained popular. Edward VIII could have had Mrs S as mistress and no-one apart from Mrs S would have mind. It's almost in the Job Spec.

Plenty of kings have, but not all. There's never been so much of a hint that Bertie had an extra-marital affair when married to Elizabeth, and I don't think this is just the state squashing unpalatable secrets - he was utterly devoted to her and their children ("We four", as he called them.)

I don't think either William or Harry have had or will have extra-marital affairs. I think the one thing they both have in common is strong commitment to their wives (though I think Harry is a million times more likely to be dumped from a great height when he's no longer useful to his spouse then William ever is.)

Which is good PR in what way exactly?

I didn’t say it was good. I said the headlines were full of the Thomas Markle allegations, which blocked out the comment about William.

The TM story was even, for some unknown reason, the lead headline on the BBC 10 pm news last night.

The problem with slimming down is that they don’t have enough people to cover all of the engagements and duties they previously did. This is especially the case when members become unwell and the next generation aren’t yet up and running. I actually like William’s idea of treating the monarchy more like a job, but that means we need to assess it accordingly - we need to look at scope, costs and performance.

Well I suppose they'd get more busywork covered if W pulled his weight but not only does he not he's also ditched patronages wholesale and indicated his intention to concentrate on his 'big projects'.

Has anyone actually noticed the lack of royalling?

What's he ditched "wholesale"?

I thought he performed his role excellently. I thought the dj story was funny and he played off the whole thing with charm.

A really good PR move. And I liked Robert Irwin too.

Yes, but if they had irrefutable evidence William was having an affair – photos, messages, receipts – I don't think they would hold off from publishing.

@Passingthroughagain No, the point is before they would have printed it even if it was just rumours or printed about the speculation in other countries.
The press were also warned & stories were removed. I don’t think that means an affair happened just demonstrating that the relationship between the press & royals is different now.

The only reason it works well in Ireland is because they were replacing the apolitical constitutional monarch of the United Kingdom when they created a new state. Their model for head is state was the UK head of state. Ireland is pretty much the only example that those who want to abolish the monarchy can point to as a potential model to follow. Even in Ireland their presidents are still former politicians, so that's what we'd get in the UK too. And British politics is quite different from the more consensual Irish politics. Ireland is also a heck of a lot smaller than the UK, which makes it easier to rally around such a figurehead. Ireland's global role is also smaller.

RedBinToday · 24/10/2026 10:52

William has always managed to tread that incredibly fine line between relatable and regal. He can be self-deprecating, confess that he's on Aston Villa fan boards and still receive a head of state with aplomb.

I don't altogether like the institution, and I hope he makes significant changes when he takes over, but I find him likeable and I think he understands better than many would in his position how to navigate his role in the modern world.

Which is where defining his role would be useful for all concerned. It’s a job, so let’s have a clear job description, expectations, performance reviews, pay reviews etc etc.

KnickerBockerGloriously · 24/10/2026 10:54

Loved PW.

I thought Hannah W was awful.
She kept interrupting questions aimed at PW and looked as if she was a bit tipsy. 'All about her' came to mind. Wish someone could have told her to tone it down.
Whereas CB was far more restrained.

I don't think any media anywhere in the world publishes fabricated claims about affairs. Can you point to any example where this has ever happened? I know the media is trash a lot of the time, but even they would be unlikely to publish something that is patently false and libellous about people's private lives.

I’m old enough to recall all of the official denials concerning Charles’ relationship with Camilla. Didn’t have Mumsnet back then, but plenty of people were determined that the rumours were groundless gossip.

He did a great job, as did HW and the young guy. Thought Cate was a bit subdued

I agree that Cate was subdued, I think HR and Robert Irwin are very big personalities and that was a factor. I want to like Hannah more and don't doubt her heart and sincerity, but she's so me me me that it grates after a while. I thought the musical entertainment was dire, she couldn't even lip-synch 😲
