It is an admission by a Sun assistant editor that the press helped create a damaging narrative about a woman whose reasons they did not fully understand and a desire to make hay on their big story. This is not their usual lines to take for sure.

That's the problem with living your life in the media & "clapping back" at everything though.

For all anyone knew there could have been private meetings.

Except nothing happens privately for them.

Well I'm going to go against the grain here and say that this could be a huge PR win for MM. Just look at the lead story on the DM website atm: https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16233067/Meghan-allegations-father-Thomas-Markle-married-Prince-Harry.html

She is positioning herself as a victim (as per usual) and as someone who has done everything right since 2018 in distancing herself and never letting her father anywhere near her DC. And despite all the inconsistencies about who knew what and when and the fact that Thomas Markle Snr is denying the allegations and saying his son has set him up (entirely possible based on his previous behaviour), it's hard to see MM as being in the wrong so far.

Edited

Apart from the fact that she has tried to contact her father since she knew of these allegations, particularly though the infamous “leaked letter”

valeriy2 · 23/10/2026 15:08

A good time to remind people that all of this flows from having a family at the heart of our unwritten constitution. None of this would have happened under President David Attenborough. We could have had a head of state who commands respect through a lifetime of public service, rather than enduring endless scandal, squabbling and royal tittle-tattle.

BemusedAmerican · 23/10/2026 15:09

Have you met President Trump? Or read about Richard Nixon? Bill Clinton?

That headline states she was made aware of of the allegations AFTER the wedding? How does that vindicate her shunning of him before the wedding, and Harry never being introduced?
I can’t see the PR win at all…

BemusedAmerican · 23/10/2026 15:10

Not to mention the major cover-ups about FDR & Kennedy...

I'm pitching high and would have the first President of the Republic as the last monarch to make for a clean handover.

It’s a fast moving story and slowly people will start to ask they questions we have.

We are all aware of the timelines and who said what and when, the general public don’t take that much interest but slowly questions will emerge.

You can’t have this knowledge for 8 years and not say anything, meanwhile commit to a mission to destroy the RF over minor slights.

There is just no way she can spin this. She was fully aware her father was (allegedly) a peadophile yet positioned herself as an advocate for child safety? Did she do all she could to ensure he was fully investigated? As long as her own children were ok? How many others were abused because she, who was fully aware, chose to do nothing except deflect by throwing her in laws under the bus at every opportunity

Something is rotten in the state of Sussex land, none of their stories are adding up...

Well that's what I mean by all the inconsistencies - and there are plenty. But I still don't see how she comes out of this looking bad.

If anything, she's totally vindicated and everyone who criticised her for not visiting her dad or rushing to the Philippines, etc, owes her an apology.

I'm not saying the Royal Family all knew, or that anyone should be judged on allegations alone. But the public deserves to know how this was handled, particularly given the years of criticism Meghan faced for distancing herself from her father.

It was not for the Royal Family to ‘handle’ anything.

Information was given to the Metropolitan Police.
That is for them to deal with; nobody else.

You're right of course, bluegreygreen, and I'm not suggesting the palace would have actually instructed the Met in what to do, but in a case like this I'd be very surprised if someone wasn't deputed to call them to find out what the hell's going on

I think probably a good time for a reality check. The type of people you may see as being a good fit for the job will not be the type of people that will be attracted to the job.

But why did she and Harry publicly give other reasons for not having a relationship with him? They could just have said it was a private matter and they wouldn't be answering questions about it. In other words, why did they lie? If indeed Meghan's version of events in her statement today is accurate?

Archie M-W was born on 6 May 2019.

MM’s letter to her father was dated 27 August 2018. She may, perhaps, have just learned a baby was on the way? She didn’t have a child “to protect” at that point.

I really don’t think she is totally vindicated . There are still many unanswered questions plus we have not yet had a response from the Met .

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/10/2026 15:17

Are we seriously being asked to believe that in 2018 the FBI and the Met communicate by letter?

AtIusvue · 23/10/2026 15:17

BBC claiming there’s a reason why she never said anything at the time.

Shes claiming she couldn’t say anything because if legal action!!!!!

She didn’t have to accuse her father of anything. She should have said she received a letter, that contained concerning information about her father, and at this point will no longer have contact with him. That she can’t speak further on this issue, as it’s a legal matter and under investigation.

She knows how bad it looks that she never said anything for 8 years!!!!

‘Sources close to the Sussexes said Meghan could not speak publicly about the allegations when she first learned of them, in order to avoid jeopardising any future investigation.
Speaking out could have resulted in legal action against her, the sources said.’

Particularly trite as he was and remains a longtime friend and supporter of the monarchy! 🙄

I think her statement is really badly worded and far too verbose at this stage. Should have simply declined to comment, even if expressing surprise at the media reports.

It's rhetorical point as you well know - he is always cited as the dream candidate- obviously when he was younger. Personally I would consider Sir John Major a great candidate.
