Presumably they have no jurisdicton in the US?

If the letter was sent to them and they briefed Meghan, they should have followed up with the relevant authorities in the US. They have cross border relationships. They're nor supposed to just ignore crime and especially not when it could be linked to the royal family, which Meghan was at the time. If nothing else it could have led to a blackmail attempt on Meghan.

DontLiveByTheClouds · 23/10/2026 12:25

Thomas Markle senior has made a statement about these allegations now.

Denies everything. Worst thing he can be accused off and his son wouldn't let him have the computers.

MrsFinkelstein · 23/10/2026 12:10

I usually always agree with you, but not this time.
I don't feel the statement is clear, or helpful.
It just raises more questions.

It completely contradicts all their previous comments about her father (& I don't disagree her paternal family appear appalling).

Why say the estrangement was about the pap photos and pressure of the wedding? Why the leaked letter to People? Why had Harry never once met him?

Most importantly, she never once in 8yrs thought to ask about the investigation? And why tf were the Met involved in allegations about a US citizen who had never lived in the UK?

A far clearer and understandable statement would be something like "I'm shocked and appalled to hear of this, my thoughts are with all children impacted by this, I will say nothing more until the investigation is concluded".

This is a horrible situation for her to deal with, but yet again, her inability to not use 300 words when 3 would suffice is going to cause her more problems.

I agree with your last point, she could definitely have done with saying less. And i agree it contradicts other things they have said. But for the position she is in with the person she is I think it was a reasonable statement.

QuirkyStork · 23/10/2026 12:26

Words fail me. What a fecal storm of humongous proportions.
I have no idea where the truth lies. I'm hoping the situation will be thoroughly investigated because of the seriousness of the allegations.
I'm pretty sure of one thing though. If she's s hoping to use this to gain sympathy and regain entry into the RF she's thoroughly deluded. I would not touch the two of them with a very very long pole. Who know what else will be coming out now the pandora's box has been opened?

I agree @jeffgoldblum
To say we should now put a stop to any more PR threads is over the top. There is always the option of not engaging or hiding a thread. 🤷‍♀️

Keeping quiet about child sex abuse allows it to flourish.

Keeping quiet about paedophiles and their enablers is the right thing to do because - why? it's not nice? gossipy? prurient? It is certainly the preferred, old- fashioned way of shutting women up on the subject.

valeriy2 · 23/10/2026 12:05

I am stating the facts as we know them. Samantha Markel says this is a put up job. Meghan with her statement says otherwise and appears to agree with her brother. It's all an almighty terrible , horrific mess and tangentially it reflects on the overall image of the Royal Family in as much that's it a grim never ending soap opera.

I don’t agree it reflects badly on RF. I think it shows they’re right to keep this pair at arm’s length.

KilkennyCats · 23/10/2026 12:27

MrsLeonFarrell · 23/10/2026 12:07

But that is really human. We aren't consistent, we don't focus on the worst stuff it's often the little things that cause the greatest offense and we can complain about the spek in someone else's relatives when ignoring the plank in our own family.

When writing about book for publication? I don’t think so.

Absolutely, it's gone on too long. We should be able to talk about it without reproach.

ChubbyCheeksCharlie · 23/10/2026 12:28

For the sake of the HaM's PR (putting aside the appalling underlying (alleged) reasons for it all) :
I very much hope Tom Markle Junior isn't lying, in exchange for money.
I also very much hope MM didn't sling in that she knew from 2018 to conveniently explain the wedding no-show, if this is not true.
I VERY much hope the Met did receive a letter about it in 2018, or i think they will make a statement.
It's so hard to believe anything from MM. As per PP, the boy who cried wolf and Matilda who told lies and was burned to death, springs to mind.

AtIusvue · 23/10/2026 12:29

This is from the BBC, an angle I hadn’t thought of :

‘With such question marks over her estranged father - and he has denied any wrongdoing - it also raises the issue of whether that played a part in the Sussexes' hurried return to the UK in late summer.
The Sussexes' spokesman has not responded to questions about whether that was a factor in their decision to leave the US, where her father was living.’

Are they seeking protection? Why would they move to the UK over this?

Exactly. Well said 👏

Further to my earlier posts and supporting the posts of pp - the timelines don’t seem to add up at all. What an absolute mess.

Mossyfox · 23/10/2026 12:31

Don't know what to believe in this web of lies and denials. Somebody is lying.

Absolutely, the timing is very interesting as they were getting a lot of flak for their desperate attempts to reconcile with the royal family but not the Markles...
Please God our high brow Royal Family will keep grey rocking these trouble making pair of low brow. private citizens...

Sometimeroyalist · 23/10/2026 12:18

The one bit of the Meghan letter that is plausible is that the Met knew all about it and has done nothing for 8 years. They are utterly useless and have a particularly bad track record on investigating SA.

Thomas Sr has never lived in London. It was not in their jurisdiction to investigate him.

mysoddenbananabread · 23/10/2026 12:32

I don't think anyone wants to salivate over this but it is understandable to comment on such a shit show. God knows what the truth is here but it's certainly bringing Meghan into the spotlight again.

I'm wondering IF there were suspicions about him then they were involved here because of the possible appearance of him at the wedding ? Perhaps they had the knowledge IF this was the case but that then leads into more tin hat ideas - was TM set up to create a fuss as a reason to NOT have him at the wedding . 🤷‍♀️ IF IF IF

valeriy2 · 23/10/2026 12:35

Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that there’s no way back for H&M and they now have to sing for their supper. Surely, though, there’s at least £10 million on the table for what she knew, when she knew it, and how she feels about it all.

KilkennyCats · 23/10/2026 12:20

Presumably they have no jurisdicton in the US?

Precisely. WTF would she contact the Met police when her father was in the USA and she was an American citizen? It makes no sense at all.

AtIusvue · 23/10/2026 12:37

So the BBC (you couldnt get more mainstream media) are asking us is this why they returned to quickly to the UK?

Which I don’t really understand why would they would say that unless they have some idea what’s going on. They say that Markle Snr is in the US.

Could it be, if Meg n Harry were on US soil they could be questioned by US authorities? Compelled to be witnesses if there were charges/court case etc. But in the Uk they can’t?

I have zero legal knowledge on this, but I can’t think why the BBC is putting this info out there.

Ah, but despite the relationship when it suits in reality the US authorities can be highly protective of their own nationals...

They're not beyond extracting one of theirs from the UK before the police get fully involved if the individual is suspected of committing a crime on UK soil, so I suspect the relationship might be a bit like that other special one....

Possibly the best the MET could realistically do is pass the info on, they couldn't insist doors were kicked in Stateside.

Rhaidimiddim · 23/10/2026 12:38

I wonder how Doria feels about this turn of events.
