Please. Can we end the Latin now 🙏🏼

What if I were to tell you that it's initially how Prince Arthur (and his bro Henry VIII) and Catherine of Aragon talked to each other?

No? OK, you win. Enough already. Pugnam perditam cum video cognosco.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez looks like a vamped-up Madonna during her Guy Ritchie Cotwold era although it's labelled as 'Peaky Blinkers' style. It's a flat cap, love.

These people are all crackers.

Jennifer Lopez channels Peaky Blinders at Dolce & Gabbana show

Jennifer Lopez channelled Thomas Shelby wearing a bizarre Peaky Blinders look as she attended the Dolce & Gabbana show during Milan Fashion Week on Saturday.

Here is the video of Charles doing his first parachute jump. The best bit is at the end, he immediately changed into a double breasted gold buttoned blazer, while his hair is still visibly damp. Real James Bond vibes!! 😁

AI overview explains he subsequently did the full training.

AI Overview:

King Charles III completed his first parachute jump on July 29, 1971, famously landing upside down in the sea before being rescued. 1]
The 1971 Jump
The Location: Studland Bay, Dorset.
The Incident: Charles was 23 years old and training as a jet pilot with the Royal Air Force. During the jump from an Andover aircraft, his legs got caught in the rigging lines, leaving him hanging upside down.
The Rescue: He splashed into the cold water and was quickly hauled out by the Royal Marines. 1]
Earning His Wings
Colonel-in-Chief: He was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of The Parachute Regiment on June 11, 1977.
Full Training: Feeling he could not fairly wear the maroon beret and Para Wings without doing the proper training, he completed Parachute Course 841a at RAF Brize Norton in 1978

As he’s walking away at the end there’s a shot of him and it could be Harry in looks.

Caesar adsum jam forte
Brutus et erat
Caesar sic in omnibus
Brutus sic in at.

I’ll get me coat….

Haven't heard that one for years. Brings back great memories.

Yes. I do know about Katherine of Aragon and Prince Arthur. Thank you.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 26/09/2026 14:38

My school took a song each from Eton and Harrow for our school songs, long before I joined. One was Gaudeamus (sung in latin) , the first line of which translates from the latin as "Therefore let us rejoice, for we are young men".

Just as inappropriate, the other song was Forty years on. The chorus is "Follow up, follow up,....til the field ring again and again with the tramp of the 22 men".
My school was (and still is) an all girls school.

Charles was right, the Paras wouldn't take kindly to him wearing the red beret without earning it.
This is my Dad with him though it might be a Marine beret Charles is wearing

That's you dad, @Cocolapew? Wow. ❤He must have some stories.

That picture of Harry sitting on the skydivers lap is so cringe, honestly he looks like a todddler! he is being absolutely roasted in the comments in the DM.

Fracle · 26/09/2026 14:40

I don't know any Latin (under 60, comprehensive school). But I actually really like the Latin digressions. You can kind of get the gist of them (and a lot of them are puns in English?).

The weird little side-alleys of discussion are part of what I enjoy about these threads. I'm not after laser focus. A bit of messing around is fine by me, and I can always skim over it if I don't like it.

meercat23 · 26/09/2026 14:42

Lets face it, the Latin digressions are no more annoying or ridiculous than the Sussex antics.

No more school
No more stick
No more horrible arithmetic

No more Latin
No more French
No more sitting on a hard old bench

I can manage the first verse of Adeste Fideles or however you spell it. Never learnt Latin though.

We said Mass in Latin when I was a little girl.

Oh my goodness. I had to look twice before I realised that photo was actually two photos joined together.

On the reel the better shot was from the side.

I think they wanted to set up a celeb court to rival the royal one. Famous names and faces quaffing champagne at different events on a roll of red carpet (while managing to avoid any ribbon cutting - does that still happen?). HAM would have been the common denominators and organisers and SM would have swooned every time, knocking W&K's appearances into touch.

Nope.

Isn’t this all very possible yet (?)

Well, so far their 'court' or salon comprises three American friends and a baby, plus the staff. (I include Markus in the staff, although who actually works for whom is anyone's guess.)

Is he getting some training in to go in the jungle in November?

At this rate I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here may be the only offer of work he has! 😂

I don't think so if the 'public engagements' that H has attended since his return are anything to go by -

(1) Invictus awards - probably the best of a poor bunch as some money was raised. But the attendance (paid for) of the Irish Guards hasn't gone down well as POW is their Colonel-in-Chief

(2) Birmingham school - an utter failure. H has been heavily criticised for virtually every aspect of this event

(3) Clinton event in NY - the teleprompter failure has highlighted H's inability to do anything other than read a speech that has been written for him

(4) Parachute jump - H isn't getting much credit for this due to it being a tandem jump

And if you think about how MM's attendance at events like the Invictus Games has detracted from what the event should represent, I think the invites to gigs are going to get less and less

KnickerlessParsons · 26/09/2026 13:30

I would think that most of the 60+ folk on here, and probably younger people who had private education, would know at least some (very) basic Latin.

Semper ad meliora

or more relevant to HAM: Nosce te ipsum

Edited

I'm 60+ as are many of my family and friends. Within that group there's one woman, privately educated, who learnt Latin at school. The rest of us, a mix of grammar and secondary modern education, barely learnt French.

And MM could be invited to do Celebrity Bake-Off
