A new thread and book not even published till Tuesday. I checked on Amazon and its only 12th on the non fiction bestseller list. Doesn't show Earl Spencer in a very good light imho.

Your post makes no sense at all

It is precisely because this was the reception the night before Elizabeth’s funeral and it was an official photo that they should not be grinning .
Its jarring .

What was wrong with somber faces ? Probably not the truth but from a PR standpoint far more appropriate.

Anyway it was only in response to Karl Marx point and in reference to Charles telling Spencer that he was lucky his father had died when he Spencer was so young .
Charles had been whining for years that his mother should abdicate just as William is now

Charles never "whined for years that his mother should abdicate".
Really. Focus on actual things to criticise them for, surely, not gossip, conjecture and hearsay.

QEII died on September 8th 2022. So not taken ‘the day after’.
Seems your memory is a bit skewed after only 4 years
Just shows I suppose how time alters perception doesn’t it.
Now, what would you have said bout this picture after 30 years I wonder…….

@DaisyDooley
What a nonsense point .

They are not my family .
I remembered there was one night involved ! Not bad for someone who avoided the whole thing!

It was the night before the funeral ! Even more inappropriate.

Can you provide a link to show William ‘whining’ about wanting his father to abdicate? Thanks.

No.

I'd be very interested to see a quote from William saying that his father should.

Second, there was a lot of misinformation that has been put out there about Diana in the meantime that he wanted to correct.

What was that and how has he "corrected it"?

Patrick Jephson, Diana’s private secretary, for eight years, spoke publicly in 2017 about an ongoing campaign to boost the then Duchess of Cornwall’s reputation in the public eye ever since her affair with Prince Charles became public knowledge.

“It’s not the palace…but advisors to Prince Charles, who over many years have crafted a systematic, sustained and expensive campaign to rehabilitate Camilla’s reputation and make her suitable to be the next Queen,” he said.

Jephson want on to say,

“This is linked, of course, to a pretty vile campaign to publicise a bogus psychiatric diagnosis that Princess Diana had a personality disorder.”

“This may have cost the Prince a lot of money, paying for PR spin doctors”

“I think it also raises ethical question marks over the methods they (Prince Charles’ PR representatives) have used.”

There is an interview with him and Camilla Tominey I think on You Tube talking about this and he gives a very credible account of his days working with Diana and how he became aware of briefings against her.

I don’t know how CS has corrected this until I have received my copy but he said in one of his interviews broadcast last night that that was one of his motivations for writing Swan Song.

As if either of them would publicly say anything so foolish.
I just get a bit sick of silly gossip when there's actually stuff you can criticise them for. It's all barrel scraping.

Between the death of my mother and her funeral I went out for lunch with my old school friend. I might have smiled. Should I have been put in prison for this?

Patrick Jephson? I recall him mocking a young Prince William to an interviewer by repeating something W said in the tone of a small boy.
Nasty. I've no idea of the truth of his revelations for money, but he's certainly a nasty man.

I agree it is not important in light of all the other crimes and offences linked with the Windsors
It was just prompted by @KarlMarx post and it had always struck me as very inappropriate- and I don’t give a damn about them!
I’d expect royalists to be the ones complaining !

People having to look “sombre”, to use the UK spelling, in photos before, after or during the funeral is a very old fashioned point of view and more suggestive of performative grief imo. Maybe the photographer mad them laugh and they thought it was a nice photo so they used it? Who knows? But I don’t think they all had to look sombre. Like I said, we have loved on from the 19th century. And people often only looked sombre then because they couldn’t move for ages while the phot was taken 🤪

Serenster · 21/09/2026 10:38

Here’s Queen Elizabeth II on her very first public engagement after her father’s death. Oh look - she’s smiling! I suppose that’s similarly inappropriate.

Off with all their heads I say!

They are all fair game for criticism and comment. I am bemused by the avid supporters. Few care about any positive spin for the Royals now, all people want is the juice, and lots more of it!

Some here are coming across as sinecured members of the Royal PR team!

This was when Charles was fifty

The point was though that no doubt Charles was running things behind the scenes for years before Elizabeth’s death.
She clearly was not capable of much day to day running
We should have been informed of this .

I am not very perturbed as to whether or not Prince Charles really did say, "We'll forget her soon enough." or whether Boris Johnson really said something like, "Well, let the bodies lie in the streets, then." because they were both under considerable stress at the time, and I've no idea what they'd been hearing or saying in the 30 minutes before the alleged words.

Yes he was entitled to write a book. But not dig up dirt on what was said or not said 30 years ago.

There’s not much point in writing it if he doesn’t include an accurate description of what happened at the time.

And two journalists have already corroborated what CS has said about his conversation with the then Prince Charles.

Speaking generally, I am finding the arrogance of some posts on here quite astonishing, that some posters feel they can make judgements about what a brother is permitted to write about their own dead sister.

So that's contradicting what you said? Charles is calling such claims "ludicrous".
Of course he stepped up and took on more work as QE aged.
At no point does this support the claim that C was whining for years to get her to abdicate.

Thedom · 21/09/2026 10:44

Man, some of the best laughs I have had, have been at the wakes of our elderly relatives.

Ukisgaslit · 21/09/2026 10:45

It was a shocking remark and will haunt them forever .

What a disregard for the value of a human life
nevermind the mother of his children

Well of course the palace made yet another ‘unprecedented’ denial !

Fake gossip and unsubstantiated rumours? Self defeating.

But you will not accept that what he actually said was, "They'll forget her soon enough", referring to the swayable crowds.

Well, it's all a bit he said/ she said.
I don't know what the absolute truth is, unfiltered by strong emotions and after so long, and I doubt it will ever emerge, but I just don't see the benefit of all this after all these years.

Edited

Money for CS - that's the only benefit IMO. He's been profiting off of Diana's name and memory since she died.

I can't take his book seriously after his claim.that his father was prevented from marrying Elizabeth Windsor by Earl Mountbatten.
