A new thread and book not even published till Tuesday. I checked on Amazon and its only 12th on the non fiction bestseller list. Doesn't show Earl Spencer in a very good light imho.

I wanted to answer a point from a previous thread about Charles Spencer waiting 29 years to publish.

First, it’s the one time he is publishing anything about his sister in all that time.

Second, there was a lot of misinformation that has been put out there about Diana in the meantime that he wanted to correct.

Third, people forget that CS was only thirty-three when Diana died and it may be only now that he feels confident to challenge King Charles so personally.

Four, the book is called Swan Song in reference to his sister but also bc both of CS’s parents died aged 68 and he is in his sixties now and he wanted to leave his book as a tribute to his sister, and an accurate historical record, and he has a lot more legitimacy to do that than many.

Fifth, it would have been poor form to challenge KC when he couldn’t answer back, after his death in other words

Sixth, revenge is a dish best served cold so they say and he has played an absolute blinder imho!

What was that and how has he "corrected it"?

Great interview, it was perfect. He said he could have stuck the knife in more than he had but he told his story. I was in London on the day of Diana's funeral and will never see anything like that again. Like the fact he has waited 30 years to tell it. The eulogy makes a lot more sense now (anger towards Charles and RF etc)....

I agree. Charles Spencer came across as very credible and it all makes sense when considered in the context of Prince Charles never wanting to get involved with Diana, and the whole Royal family wanting to get Diana & Dodi out of the picture.

'He's not a vengeful person' he alleges rather an 'eye witness to history'. Does he not undertand she said/he said is just gossiping? Why does he keep hanging on to this historian claptrap is it just to enable his blabbing?

I hope this is the last we see of his ghastly, jowly face and I really hope someone returns the favour and cashes in on his behaviour over the years.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 21/09/2026 08:39

If only these people could look beyond their own egos and greed ,think of the next generation and stop perpetuating this cycle of harm
A book of he said she said - how is this helping anyone ?
as soon as the next member of the family gets a gripe off to the publishers they go - telling tales to the world
What sort of an example is this setting for the next generation
Its spectacularly selfish

But the modern Royal Family, stripped of any real political power beyond the ceremonial, doesn’t really make history in the traditional sense anymore it provides the pomp and pageantry around the real business of government and public life.

Against that backdrop, gossip is pretty much all that remains. And that, I think, is their existential problem now. Never has there been such a vast appetite for drama, nor so many channels through which to consume it, as there are today. The public hunger for royal gossip is therefore not some peripheral distraction; it is almost inevitably drawn into the vacuum created by an institution whose actual power has largely disappeared.

They have power to protect the family, look at Andrew.
But I agree if they are not going to do any meaningful work, all that is left is gossip.

Yes the whole picture that you describe there re Charles Spencer is compelling and resonant.

A poster above mentioned the disrespect Charles showed to Diana in wearing the ‘Charles and Camilla’cufflinks to his wedding.
What sort of sick games do these people play?
And Charles was not ‘forced’ to marry Diana. He was in his 30s.

He choose to go along with the facade to further his own interests.
None of their marriages are as they are presented to us, in my opinion

The whole family disrespect the nation though with their lies and coverups .
Pathetic .

Thank god for younger generations ( I know many older people have also had the scales fall from their eyes ) who don’t need this childish ‘entertainment’

They are cruel people . One of the Dimbleby brothers confirmed that the Windsors were relieved when Diana died . Charles saying :
‘We will forget her soon enough’
says it all.
The Windsors use and abuse people.

Yes, the book is certainly scant on real evidence.

Exactly and a caring uncle would recognise that Diana's top priority would be attempting to build bridges between her sons, not fuelling the fire by dropping this incendiary rubbish.

Thedom · 21/09/2026 08:47

Is this really the institution we want to preserve at all costs, and for these people to reign over us for generations to come?

Seems the majority of the public do want it though, the dial is not changing that much at all despite the turmoil of the so called revelations since the Oprah interview.

That's just gossip. They'd say something so horrible to one of the Dimblebys? Highly unlikely.
I don't think it's true that C wore those cufflinks on his wedding day. However, if you provide the photos, I am happy to be corrected.

I think I may call myself a 'historian' as some of my relatives had an argument a few years ago at Christmas, I can recount if anyone is interested?

I'm pretty sure Earl Spencer would've known that or at least been informed. He could've said no. Presumably like Harry did, as Spare was never serialised in any British newspaper.

Not serializing Spare was the publishers marketing strategy though, not a choice by Harry, they kept it under wraps to maximize the impact and the sales numbers, they knew it would be an enormous bestseller.

True! All this "gossip" presented as fact! One of the Dimblebys heard this, one of Diana's friends heard that, Spencer heard something else.
At an emotional time, and 29 years on?.

Yes I think this is an own goal. Spencer has probably encouraged more support for KC.

He could have been clever, passive aggressive dropped a few digs but nope. He went for full on overegged psycho behaviour with his ott interview and I bet that most people, while feeling sorry for William, are laughing at Spencer.

Dollymylove · 21/09/2026 08:55

Purely for balance and and fairness, I think it would be a good idea for Charlie Spencers 3 ex wives to get together and write a book about HIM.
Now wouldn't that be interesting!!

Did you watch the interview ?

He said there was a great deal more he could have said in terms of shocking personal details about the Windsors but he did not include any . His focus was on Diana .

He has been remarkably restrained .

As for example to the next generation? The Windsors ? Pedophile protectors lying to the nation? Taking money from the deceased ? Too long to go on . They are corrupt and now represent the worst of us .

One more point - some who support the Windsors try to say ‘how weird republicans supporting an earl’

That says more about their binary views . I believe this country would be revived with the monarchy and aristocracy gone.

But in a media landscape which is so heavily propagandised in favour of the Windsors ( looking at you BBC and mournathon after Elizabeth) I welcome anyone ready to correct the PR we have been fed .

Probably as part of the divorce deal got them to sign NDAs - just a hunch but he does have a "reputation" to preserve.

No, he said "the King". Not the Windsors.
It seemed very personal.

Yes. Seriialised in the dm and have a televised interview. I'd watch that.

Yes, indeed. Perhaps his adult daughters as well.

Doesn't seem to be all over the news anymore so hopefully that's it. He's had his public hissy fit, made allegations and now it's over. Hope it was worth it for all the anguish he'll have caused William.

Apparently they have NDA’s as part of their divorce settlements, I read an old interview where the interviewer said Charles could not comment on the accusations levelled at him by Victoria Lockwood in court as they had both signed privacy agreements as part of the divorce and court settlement.
