Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

I have no idea who I believe. However, I do find the Mumsnet “the King is wonderful and can have done nothing wrong” line a little hard to take.

Don't care really!

Have you seen Charles Spencer interview? It is not a soft interview, he is grilled. He comes across as sharp and intelligent

I think instead of starting your thread as a debate, you ought to have come straight out and said you believed him. You never wanted opinions. You just wanted to state yours.

As for being sharp and intelligent - really?

Did you think the same about the Prince Andrew interview?
Another one who insisted they remembered something and really were at Pizza Express Woking.

Mainly that is because if MN represents the public, that is what people think.

The poll is 2/3rds for the King and 1/3rd for Spencer.

You can find whatever you like hard to take.

I find CS account hard to take.

damnatiomemoriae · 20/09/2026 14:18

He may well be thinking differently now.

Unfortunately someone with a habit going back many, many years may not have an entirely reliable memory.

Who has said that?

What has been said repeatedly is Spencer has zero credibility and is making money from his sister's tragic death which he always claimed he'd never do.

To make these awful claims will surely devastate William. You know, his 'blood family' who he professed he'd protect.

Yes I do. But when caused by alcohol it may not be permanent. (unlike Alzheimers Disease)
If a person stops drinking, receives nutritional support (like thiamine), and undergoes medical rehabilitation, cognitive decline can halt, and brain function may significantly recover

'may' or does? After 40 years?

Where have you copied and pasted that from?

You're really desperate to try to prove he is as sharp as a tack still!

Brain function may recover, but memories won't reappear. This is definitely not a case of his recollection being better because he is sober.

OneLilacHedgehog · 20/09/2026 14:22

Charles Spencer seemed sharp to me.

So the initial strategy was to claim he was crazy with grief. Now it's to claim he has brain damage.

Why does the king not simply say he didn't say that? Presumably because he did.

I did say "may" as it's not an absolute and I'm not a specialist in treating addictions.
I'm not "desperate" about anything, just giving another angle, which you can accept or reject as you choose.
If he was drinking "heavily" for 40 years then he would have very visible signs of deterioration in all bodily systems.

I'm don't think that is reflective of most comments. I'm reading questions around memory, contrasting what people read and saw at the time with what Charles S is claiming now and finally people pointing out that Charles S' own account has changed.

There are both pro and anti comments of course but I think that most posts contain nuance and some valid questions about the veracity of what is being claimed.

On the other hand, now he has been sober for a year maybe he can see everything more clearly....

A year of sobriety can't undo the damage of decades of heavy drinking. And the fact that he was a heavy drinker at the time of Diana's death makes it even more unlikely that his "memories" have any basis in facts.

Basically KC is not a stupid man. He was brought up in a certain way to revere the Crown and what it stood for. I don't think he would say something like that to the brother of his dead ex wife. He's simply not that stupid.

I have a lot of sympathy for KC. That doesn’t mean I think he’s perfect. He’s a shy, sensitive man who’s had lots of difficult and strange experiences: bullied at school, shunned at university because other students didn’t want to be seen with the heir to the throne, Forbidden to marry the woman he loved and persuaded into an unsuitable marriage, humiliated by having an intimate phone call splashed all over the press and now pilloried For what his spiteful BIL says he said 30 years ago.

On the other hand I’ve been aware for ages of how unpleasant Charles Spencer is. I think to say these things now, to try to destroy a terminally ill man (and hurt Prince William) is despicable and I think time will judge him for it.

Sorry for typos - struggling with old iPad!

You miss out Charlie's as a dad and putting his son's first .
He also seems intrinsically naval gazing and feels sorry for himself.

Anyway ...it's going to get worse and i think Charles has made himself look stupid by saying it wasn't true.

Eh? What wasn’t true?

Noodledog · 20/09/2026 15:01

I think when deciding whether to believe someone's allegations it's sensible to consider whether they have behaved dishonestly in other situations.

One thing that comes to mind for me is CS's words following Diana's death versus his behaviour following Diana's death. He made a big thing about how terrible it would be to monetize her death and he would never do it. However, less than a year after her death, he opened an exhibition of her clothes and jewellery at Althorp where he charged £10 a head for entry, and the exhibition continued until William turned 30 and gained control of her belongings when it had to be shut down. The profit he made is said to be over £30 million. And then there's the small matter of him selling signed copies of his eulogy for decades.

The truth is, CS is not a nice man. His history is littered with cruelty to others, including Diana. He likes money and is prepared to sink low to get his hands on it. He has shown many times that to him, truth is very much secondary to financial gain and personal vengeance.

He said in so many words 'recollections can vary'

He could have said 'You are a lying bastard'.

You've chosen to interpret his words as being guilty.
That's your choice.

And to be honest he wasn't nice to her when she was alive.

Supposedly she asked to stay with him as a retreat and he refused.

Well no one is saying that so it’s not really relevant. It’s more about the character of a brother who is cashing in and trying to get maximum PR.

Ah, so this is a lie - it's all online- but everything CS says it true?

Do you have a direct line to the Spencers?

Or are you being selective with what you regard as THE TRUTH.
