Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

There seem to be a lot of Royalists on this thread trying so hard to defend King Charles!

That was the man who said to his young wife (who was in love with him) "Do you think I'm going to be the only Prince of Wales who doesn't have a mistress?"

Nasty, just plain nasty.

Have you seen how irritated he gets when a pen doesn't work?

Yup, and then Camilla whips one out of her handbag and says "There, there, never mind, here's one that works dear"
He just acts like a grumpy old man sometimes.

He is selfish. He's a product of the UK system.

If you tell someone from birth that they are better than everyone else, they are going to start thinking it.

Remember when Paul burell (butler) wrote that he was working at Highgrove and Princess Diana would ring him and ask who had visited. He would tell her. This caused an argument about Camilla visiting Charles a lot.

Prince Charles then called Burell in and told him not to tell Diana this stuff.

Burell said he was a bit fed up at that stage and said to Prince Charles 'are you asking me to lie your Majesty'

He alleged that Prince Charles then shouted 'yes! I am Prince of Wales and I will be King! So yes!. ' and then he threw a book across the room..

I think it was "rest assured".

To me it doesn't make sense to then say to her brother "she'll ne forgotten soon enough"

Why would Spencer "rest assured" about that?

Because he was being snide

It a hallmark of the Windsor ‘clapbacks’
Always snide

He was saying he knew better .
He looks a right fool 30 years later

Percythepollingstationcat · 20/09/2026 12:45

Cathandkin · 20/09/2026 09:10

I suppose because he's a well spoken aristocrat. He's appears to be eloquent and well informed. The BBC, and many posters on here, seem to be impressed with that.
Spencer is a very damaged, abused and abusive man; I'm glad that he's getting support and treatment for his many problems and that he can deal with his horrendous school experiences.

Apparently his father was rather cold and withdrawn, which couldn't have helped.
Despite all these abuses he has managed to write several historical books, so he's no fool.
I understand he has now been sober for a year and I hope his recovery will continue.

A lot of the Aristocrats are cold and withdrawn. It's the UK culture.

In general, I find people in England to be colder than people in other countries.

OneLilacHedgehog · 20/09/2026 01:06

@Illegally18 Charles Spencer has shared the context. And he has only ever had two phone calls with the king, or prince as he then was.
Do you not think if you were on the phone to Prince Charles for one of the two calls you ever had, you would be paying close attention to what he said?

Maybe, but I wouldn't trot it out 30 years later, so as not to hurt the kids, even if they're adults. Some things are better left unsaid.

@OneLilacHedgehog When you started your thread were you genuinely asking for opinions- and neutral - or wanting to post your own opinion, which is #teamSpencer?

40 years of hard drinking doesn't help your cognitive function. The damage has been done.

Is that in writing or another media 'report'?

Can you not accept the marriage was doomed from the start?
They had something like a dozen dates before getting engaged.

As they say on MN , Diana should have 'given her head a wobble', or her family ought to have wobbled theirs and offered advice.

'In love' at 19 with your first real boyfriend who you barely know is not the foundation for a sound marriage.

England has a cold, reserved culture.

Making sweeping criticisms based on nationality is xenophobic. For example i wouldn't dream of saying 'the Chinese are all <insert negative opinion>'

Rich people are like poor people. Some nice, some arseholes. Spencer clearly the latter.

I think in the UK people are more reserved than for example people from Italy or France, but cold is not the same as reserved.

As for having an 'abusive father', who knows. And writing his books well, fine. A lot of them are about the family line and all he had to do was some research and cobble them together- and, being who he is, finding a publisher would be far easier than if he was Joe Bloggs.

But writing academic historical books doesn't equate to emotional intelligence.
We can see that by his 4 marriages, numerous affairs and 2 of his 7 children who don't speak to him.

To enlighten you, most men pushing 80 often behave like grumpy old men at times. Hence the label.

I didn't write that it's fact. I said that England is known around the world for having a cold, reserved culture.

If you look on worldwide online forums, I just did a very quick search there, there are loads of threads titled 'why are a lot English people so cold and reserved ' ' why are a lot of the English so cold and unfriendly' ' etc. Surely we all know that is thought about England

Maybe you should stop reading forums where people often spout rubbish and who clearly have never lived in the UK.

You maybe also need to get out a bit more (in England) and you will find we are the salt of the earth- kind, helpful, generous and warm.

Where in England do you live?
