And indeed he hasn’t said or written about Diana anything for nearly thirty years.
But how many visitors has he hosted at Althorp each summer to visit Diana’s gravesite, memorial temple and exhibition in that time (Tickets currently £25.50 per adult)? He lobbied hard for her to be buried on the grounds of Althorp rather than with the rest of her family - all 19 generations of them - at the local church in the village next to Althorp.
The Diana, Princess of Wales memorial fund was wound up in 2012, so he won’t have been donating any of the visitor proceeds to that.
You are rather mischievously linking making income from visitors with the arrival of Diana’s remains, when Althorp has been open to visitors since 1953.
And the ticket price you quote is fairly standard for a stately home visit.
I note also that Althorp is temporarily closed atm at a time when CS could be profiting from the added interest that his book has generated.
And CS certainly does not welcome visitors to Diana’s graveside! Yes, CS has created a small exhibition about Diana’s life, and a suitable place where visitors can leave flowers, but both are a very respectful distance away from Diana’s burial place.
And I think it is entirely appropriate that Diana’s grave is not in the local churchyard given the extraordinary, almost obsessive, interest in her life and death at the time, and that CS has located it where he can protect it. Especially given the manner of her death being pursued by paparazzi.
Can you imagine it being in the local churchyard and subject to “souvenir hunters?” . How dreadful that would be for not only Diana and her family but also the other members of the parish who have relations buried there.
