Yes harry wrote that he was just expected to get on with things and carry on as usual.

He wrote that this led to him having a lot of trauma about his mothers death, until he went for therapy as an adult.

Edited

I think that attitude is pretty common in that generation though. Just get on with things. It's definitely how I was raised. It does cause trauma to always have feelings dismissed like that.

I would argue he was likely to have ongoing trauma about his mother's death regardless of how well it was handled.

Well it would be good if someone had checked in on how he was feeling. He was only 12. That's unusually young to lose your mother.

I think they need to do more research into grief in general, and give more help and resources. People are just expected to move on, then have a breakdown ten years later.

My cousin lost his mother to cancer at 13. He said losing his mother affected him his whole life until he went for grief counselling in his thirties.

Prince Charles didn't express it in saying "Im happy".

Earl Spencer said that Prince Charles just SOUNDED happy.

All that Earl Spencer has said that Prince Charles actually said in words is that Prince Charles said 'we will forget Diana soon enough'

For me, the big question is, was Charles Spencer even sober at the time Diana died or are these more of his drunken memories since he has loved the bottle more than people much of his life?
I might not think the best of many of the royal family, but I do think Charles Spencer is nothing but a wanker. Funny how he let Diana have her gravesite there at Althorp, but wouldn't let her come home to Althorp after she split with Charles. Guess there was no glory to grab or publicity to push at that time.

What adult brother let's his sister live with him.

It's not a normal request. Diana had millions. She shod have bought her own country house.

Yes, I worry about this for my own children, though I've done everything I can to be supportive and meet their needs. The youngest was 12. They've had all the counselling and stuff and I'm always open to what they may need even now, but it's the worst thing to not be able to protect your children from this sort of loss and pain. They all respond so differently too. One of mine refused to talk about it for over a year. When he finally did, it was full on. I expect them to be affected their whole life.

Yes I think it's true. I didn't ask if it was true or not did I. I asked for people's thoughts. This thread is not setting out to find out whether it's true or not.

So you writing ' You appear to be certain that what he's claiming is true though OP, so I'm not quite sure why started this thread' is not relevant.

I like to hear all opinions. Think it's true, think it's not true. All opinions are welcome.

But, since you only really want to hear about how "true" every word the ever drunk Charles Spencer's words are, you are only posting to hear your own echo.

Enjoy.

Monster, no.

Cruel yes. And he is capable of being cruel

Diana said that Prince Charles was cruel to her about her friends death, remember. She said that they were in the car on the way to a red carpet. Just before she got out, prince Charles said "oh by the way your friend died"

She said that he chose a moment to tell her that would cause her the most distress.

Edited

No, anyone who wouldn't be saddened that a child lost a parent and they acted "happy, giddy, unphased" is a monster, whether you are ex Mr. and Mrs. Smith or a divorced royal couple.

Since I very much doubt that Charles Spencer was sober at that time, I doubt he remembers much of anything.

I also wonder if Diana's death didn't enrich Charles Spencer in some way with family money having to be split one less way and all. I admit, I don't know anything about those family money hierarchies, but I have wondered.

Charles Spencer is doing it now for no other reason than what a PP mentioned. King Charles has cancer and Spencer has to make his money while the getting's good.

He is vile and dispicable. And a shit-stirring opportunist.

It was the family estate. Charles Spencer could have been less a twat-waffling, drunken ass-hat, and let her come back to her family home to get sorted and rest.

She had to be so hurt that her own brother would not let her stay at the FAMILY estate.

Everything about Charles Spencer gets ickier the more I find out about him. I wonder if all his exes will be giddy and happy when he kicks the bucket. His liver has to be on it's last leg.

caringcarer · 19/09/2026 01:58

I can't see that Charles had anything to gain from Diana's death. He already his divorce. After her death he'd have to bring up their 2 sons alone. I think it's distasteful and disrespectful to his sisters memory to write this book. I won't be buying/reading it or the serialised version in the newspapers to make Spencer more money. I hope Harry doesn't try to monitise his Mum's death by writing a book either.

Not disingenuous at all as I have not read details and would like to know. I've seen reference to it but no details. I dont read every post.

Earl Spencer's had a number of wives and been done for domestic violence too. And he's a cheater.

Yes, although Diana had millions, the reason she wanted to stay at Althorp was to escape the media. It's a large, tranquil, private estate. I can'r believe her brother said no.

MeghanAndTheSeals · 19/09/2026 02:56

No, I don’t think it’s true. Am sure a lot of emotions were there at the time, but giddy and excited seem ridiculous.

And why wait almost 30 years to reveal it? He wasn’t backwards with coming forwards with his eulogy, why keep this info under wraps for so long?

TBF to CS, I think Diana asked for a particular property and he said no - because he couldn’t guarantee it was secure/private enough from prying eyes. Can’t remember the exact details/reasoning, but they’ve been given on other threads. He did offer another couple of properties, but she declined them. I think he sued the press in this regard.

Still doesn’t make me believe some of what he’s revealing now though.

Charles Spencer only got Althorp because he was male - it shouldn’t have been his to hoard. The whole Spencer family should have had access to the estate at no cost, imo. It’s bloody vast.

CS hoarded it greedily like a golden dragon’s egg he hatched himself.

The letters that came out in court showed the rather offhand way he dealt with his sister. I believe he called their relationship “peripheral” - until she died and he saw an opportunity to grab a bit of attention.

Just to clear up any misunderstandings, this was what was said about Diana’s request to stay on Althorp:

@SpidersAreShitheads - oof, that’s made me reassess what I’d seen, especially given the reports he’d “sued” the press and won re refusing somewhere to stay. Not that I was looking for a reason to defend him, I think he’s awful. I’ve seen info recently re his speech at his wedding to Victoria, totally vile.

As an aside, I concur totally with your username!

Absolutely, doesn’t it just?! I think reading the actual words rather than an overview provides real insight into their relationship and just how little Charles Spencer was willing to do to protect his sister in her hour of need. Personally, I think it’s a disgrace.

I said on another Royals thread earlier tonight that I really despise deliberate misinformation or people who twist the truth to suit their agenda. It just prevents any meaningful conversation and is utterly frustrating! So I think you were completely right to mention it, no matter how odious he is. Facts are important. It’s just that his actual words shed a different light on it - although others may feel differently.

And thank you 😂😂 I NC to this quite some time ago intending it to be temporary but so many people have agreed with the sentiment I’ve kept it 😂

SpidersAreShitheads · 19/09/2026 03:57

On a separate note, I’ve just seen some of the other extracts from his book and he really doesn’t give a fuck about William 😕

William is just two years older than Harry. He lost his mother too. But all Charles Spencer seems to write about his poor little Harry. CS clearly hates the Royals so I wonder if he prefers Harry as he’s effectively stuck two fingers up at them all while William is the king in waiting.

I’ve obvs only seen extracts from the book so possibly there’s more elsewhere but I sincerely doubt it.

Any adult brother with multiple houses in a huge family land that he destined to be the keeper just because he's born a male would. That's how aristocracy inheritance system works. The oldest male get it all, but he should protect the rest of the family as a patriarch. Diana never asked to live with him. She asked to live in one of the empty building on his estate.

A totally complete and utter arse.

How DARE he come out with a book now, acting all benevolent and caring.

His true colors showed in those letters and as they often say here on MN and in the world, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them".

I am waiting to see how Spencer's fan base will excuse this. waiting

Pots and kettles don't really come to mind as none of Earl Spencers wives have died, and no one said that Earl spencer was giddy, elated and excited after his ex wife died

What does everyone think about this specific scenario?

Because no one GAFF how Charles Spencer acted when one of his exes died.

I doubt he was sober enough to notice. Charles Spencer is a greedy, disgusting excuse for a human being. He didn't GAFF about Diana when she was alive, but felt he needed to give the eulogy and now a book? He just wanted the adoration and attention then and now.

I didn't know that W&H went to France also, and that had to be very hard for them.

They didn't. They stayed at Balmoral until demands from the Great British Public caused them all to return to London.

Thank you. I didn't think they had gone, because there were only pictures of then Prince Charles and Diana's sisters, but some article had said they went, so I thought I just had not remembered.

The news coverage at the time - he looks like a man who is shellshocked, devastated and on the verge of tears not one who is "giddy with excitement"

The three of them looked devastated and overwhelmed in these pictures. Just heartbreaking.

I remember crying when I saw Prince Charles and Diana's sisters leaving the hospital on the news. They looked as if they were dazed and in shock. It brought it home to me what a true tragedy it all was. Not just a "news story", but real people.

I don't disbelieve it, but I'm not sure I believe it either.

I certainly think it's plausible and within character for KC to have felt that way about Diana, and also to be so utterly self-absorbed and entitled that, when in high emotion, he might have said such a thing to CS.
But at the same time, CS is rather vile and clearly just trying to make some money off his dead sister, so he could well be embellishing the truth or making things up wholesale in order to sell more copies.

Telecone · 19/09/2026 07:40

"treat those serving him in a horribly derogatory manner when he was signing the accession documents after Mama's death. He was rabid IMV that day and the mask slipped big time."

KC3 was 36hrs after his mums death and he had a small huff over a pen. I doubt he'd slept and was trying to perform public duties Hardly "rabid".
