Inappropriate photo op for William and catherine

This was at an event this week. But the photo just made me gasp. It looks like the elderly woman is being used as a prop, rather than being treated in a dignified way.

Charles and Diana was just as much an arranged marriage as any in the past, however much the media tried to dress it up as 'at last Charles has found his princess and his happy ever after!' two people mated because the country needed an heir without any consideration given to their compatibility or suitability for the long haul.

I was never and am not a Diana fan, but it was obvious that the RF thought that having grown up around them she knew the ropes, would pop out the heir and spare and would then settle into good works and turning a blind eye to whatever her husband got up to (as he would to whatever she did) in the usual way of royal and aristo marriages. What they didn't bank on was her sheer undoubted charisma and ability to connect to the public. Had they been able to harness that who knows what she and Charles could have done as a partnership.

Or the very unusual circumstances - the pressure for Charles to marry a woman with ‘no past’ and the manoeuvring by both families to push Diana into it. The Spencer’s need to own their cruel dismissal of her pre-wedding cold feet. It wasn’t what happened during the marriage so much as - it was just doomed from the start.

Charles, being older, should have said no - but they were very different times.

I don’t subscribe to the view that it’s ever simple. I’m in a worrying situation myself at the moment because my son is about to marry someone I know he doesn’t love any more - he’s confessed this to me - and he feels he can’t let the gf down. It’s a nightmare- I can’t bear to think of her being hurt, and he’s a decent chap but this is just never going to work. There are such things as marriages which are doomed before they ever start.

Diana's mother advised against the marriage, a fact you ignore when you refer to Diana's family.

Charles was 32. He was old enough to resist family pressure. His mother did. Her family did not want her to marry Philip, but she insisted. I think her family were right as Philip was a life long philanderer, but that's by the by.

It really wasn't that different in terms of Charles being able to say no. Charles is a weak, whiney man who seems to see himself as a perpetual victim. He was never going to stand up and say no.

You either haven't read my comment or don't understand it.

"That is something else detractors don't get. Diana was not safe and bland. She was messy and did things no one would agree with such as affairs with married men. But she had an incredible charisma that drew people in. People don't think she is a saint or martyr as detractors often accuse. They simply don't understand why people admire her."

Everyone who admires her knows she was human and not a saint.
You and others don't seem to understand that you can know someone did some things wrong, even very wrong, and still admire them for other things they did.

It's why the trashing of Diana never works. And yes people do try and trash her, not by stating facts but by painting her as a terrible person at worst, or crazy at best. She was a real human being who made real mistakes, and did some very admirable things.

Ok. Genuine question: Why are you trashing William?
This thread is horrible. You find a picture and you claim that W&K are humiliating an elderly woman. A photo you got from a very unpleasant website. It's not even true.
Why? You were trying to make William look bad.
Diana's beloved son! How would she feel that you're trashing him for the good work he does?
Do you think Diana would like this, or read your OP and be absolutely horrified?

How does that help Diana?
She loved William. She'd be disgusted, it's cruel and it's dishonest.

William, Charles, Philip - who's next?

I'm going to take at face value your confident assertion that Philip was a life long philanderer, and point out that QEII was born and raised in the tradition that fidelity from a marital partner was not to be expected. It was a long aristo and royal tradition that once you'd done your duty in the way of heirs both partners could do as they liked as long as they didn't cause a scandal and kept it all in the social circles that understood those rules and that marital fidelity, even if you decided to be faithful yourself, was a distinctly middle class notion. She and QEQM were very much of a generation that said 'boys will be boys, close your eyes and ignore it.'

I think the false premise of the thread was exposed early on and OP then disappeared.

Yes, it has wandered about and off topic somewhat, but the original topic had no mileage.

But the OP didn't admit they were incorrect. Call me old fashioned but I find it hard to take statements about correcting a narrative seriously from someone who can't correct their own words.

I think it's a sin is the best account of the stigma aids patients faced at the time, for younger people who don't understand the culture at the time.
Of course there are far better more historical accounts out there.

I have met various non famous people who are pretty charismatic. But only one person with incredible charisma, yes. As I said she could walk into a room of strangers, say nothing e.g. get a drink, and the attention of the room would be on her. It was incredible. She also looked amazing just wearing old jeans and a jumper, even though she was pretty, but not beautiful.

I would contrast Diana and Sophie. Both are pretty, but Sophie gets pretty much ignored by the press while Diana still gets media coverage. On paper Sophie should get way more public interest. And the difference is charisma.

Gosh.

Diana was very charismatic. But there are a few other differences between her and Sophie which might account for their relative media coverage - one died, tragically, in her 30s, leaving two young sons. One was destined to be queen but had a messy and very public divorce. One was a very beautiful but complicated person, about whom there are many newsworthy stories, like pushing her stepmother down the stairs. One had a spectacular wedding that was viewed by ~750M people and a state funeral watched by ~2.5B people. One courted the press, had tabloid editors on speed dial for when she wanted photos of her in a bikini in the papers. One did a tv interview about the state of her marriage, which was quite the scandal in those days. One lived and died in a very different time in terms of media landscape. And one is the victim of endless speculation, fuelled by those around her trying to profit from her death.

Her grandmother, her father and her sisters all pushed her into it,

A fact you are ignoring in your usual way of discarding evidence which doesn’t fit your narrative.

If you think of the Spencer family as nice, caring folk, I’m afraid you’re in for a shock!

There is a lot of treating Diana like a saint generally around, even if you don’t personally. It’s not true that no one treats her like that, even if you don’t personally. And by saying she had empathy with AIDS victims, I wasn’t ignoring the actions she took. Empathy includes that. Ok? 🙄

No I don't think they do treat her like a saint. They admire her.
I think you don't understand her appeal at all.
The point was describing it as empathy with an aids victim simply minimised what she did. Anyone can show empathy. It's actions to change things that matters.

As William and Kate were doing with that elderly woman in Bute. Look at your response to that! Don't you think that's hypocritical?

I’m amazed every day at the way people who worship Diana seem to hate and bully William.

Why? That’s not a rhetorical question - I’d like OP to answer it for me, because it makes no sense.

I’m no Diana worshipper but even I hate to think of how devastated she’d be to hear her beloved elder son spoken about with such nastiness.

Why are you creating a narrative I have never said? I said nothing about the rest of Diana's family.

I was simply correcting a comment that said Diana's family pushed her into the marriage, when actually her own mother advised her against the marriage.
I am sorry facts are inconvenient to you.

I am not trashing William. I saw the photo and thought it looked disgusting, that's it.

I do know any criticism however mild of William and Catherine gets characterised as trashing. I once said I thought Catherine's clothes were boring and had multiple people accuse me of trashing Catherine who never puts a foot wrong and is recovering from cancer.

Your answer reveals a lot about your resentment towards them.

Why on earth would you come out with “C’s clothes are boring “? Have a saucer of milk, OP.
