Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

It's the same as the "whatever love means" comment.

If you watch the original video it seems to be an attempt at a joke after Diana reacts with annoyance to the interviewer asking if they were in love.

The Tina Brown biography of Diana is excellent and actually quite sad because after reading it you could see there was some love and affection between them in the early days.

I've never bought in to the idea that weren't ever ok. I think they were all right for a while. I don't base this on The Crown programme. I base it on living through the time and following the news and the pictures then.

He could easily have avoided actually praising him for the way he was handling things.

I doubt he had much choice.I'm sure there would have been great pressure to behave. He was the son of an earl after all. I think he made it pretty clear how he felt when he gave that speech in the pulpit so I dont know why people on here are making out like he was behaving as if everything was hunky dory back then. Itcllearly wasnt. And he said as much.

AnotherSadDog · 17/09/2026 20:52

I completely agree, just as happened with Omid Scobie's book about Harry and Meghan.
Oops, I forgot to quote.

What is this to do with what we are talking about?

Just showing how easy it is to insert giddily elated into an observation and make it sound like it is true.

Apologies. I forgot to add ‘giddy - like he’d won the lottery’.

Perhaps that can be about H when he ‘won’ the legend of aviation trophy.

@HPFA Charles has got such a hard time over the years for that comment but Diana reacted first to the question and her response ‘yes of course’ wasn’t very convincing. Charles’ strange comment may have been a nervous response.

It’s always taken out of context!

It’s clear they were both shy people who found that interview excruciating - I know I would!

It was obviously an awkward attempt at humour.

The "theft" of books from the back of that delivery truck was possibly just warm-up publicity for the publication of these excerpts & subsequent book release. He must really be struggling for cash.

Perhaps that is where the convoy detoured to the other day.

No wonder they were late.

Love this sketch, and I do feel the second half of it is relevant here:

Diana's death was bloody awful for the royal family whichever way you look at it.

She'd been criticised for a long time that past year by the press for all sorts of things, been called a bad mother, you name it. When she died, the press (in their guilt) instantly u-turned by plastering that "queen of hearts" stuff all over the front pages and pointing fingers at Buckingham Palace in order to divert attention away from their own abhorrent behaviour, knowing of course that the palace could not retaliate. Diana would forever be remembered as a young, beautiful, saintly, wronged, tragic figure. If she'd lived, aged, made mistakes, shown herself as human and fallible, public opinion today would be quite different I'm sure.

People also seem to have retconned her as hating the monarchy, which is nonsense. She was a monarchist, and had a very close and affectionate relationship with Prince Philip in particular, whom she called "Dearest Pa". Frankly it makes no sense for Prince Charles or any of the rest of the family to be glad when she died. She and Charles were on very good terms by 1997 and were successfully coparenting. Charles would certainly have needed the Queen's consent to marry Camilla, but Diana's death didn't really change the likelihood of that. If anything, it probably set it back a few years because it would have been seen as insensitive to marry too soon afterwards.

Most important, though, the absolute devastation it brought the two young boys to lose their mother - look, you don't have to like Charlie. Plenty of people don't. But he's not a psychopath... he, like anyone else, would have done absolutely anything to spare his sons that kind of pain.

"Giddy" like he'd "won the lottery"? Oh do bugger off you horrid little man.

"She and Charles were on very good terms by 1997 and were successfully coparenting. Yes, Charles and Diana were getting on and had found a way to coparent at the time of her death. They were putting their children first.

Good point about Diana's death probably setting Charles and Camilla's wedding back. Diana herself was in a relationship at the time of her death. It's not as though she hadn't moved on. There's no reason why Diana was an impediment to Charles and Camilla marrying.

But even if they hated each other and were at each other's throats, the last thing that Charles would have wanted was for his sons to lose their mother.

He was mid-30’s and the royal family were getting absolutely caned in the press. Charles was hated and there were constant “he should step aside for William” talks.

If he’d said it then the public would have absolutely believed him.

He was old enough and composed enough to have a dig at them in the eulogy, so he absolutely could have said something around that time rather than waiting 29 years,

As I said in another post, I think there were limits . He was the son of an earl or even an earl himself then. I remember being shocked by what he said in the pulpit, so to go even further back then would have been unthinkable. Dont forget he only wrote about boarding achool abuse recently too. It wqa different back then..There were things you didnt say.

I am old enough to remember the newspapers in the summer before she died and they were negative about her. Not sure if you are old enough to remember

She died in 1997. It's hardly the ancient past.

Yes a rich man talking about being sexually abused as a child was unthinkable back then.

But it does mean that few people under 45 will really remember her in her heyday.

To go even further back then would not have been unthinkable. If what he is saying now was true he'd have happily spouted it back then.

He's cashing in in Diana. He grabbiness is appalling.

No I disagree. You don't understand the times.

Trainbleu · 17/09/2026 21:14

Isn’t it that she wanted to live on a property on the Althorp estate and he refused, instead offering her another property which was not on the Althorp grounds but almost an hour away. Diana refused that option and was terribly upset he didn’t want her living on the Althorp Estate itself.

I am talking about Charles Spencer, his book, and the impact of that together with Charles's statement

I do understand the times. He was happy to be an unpleasant arse 30yrs ago he'd have certainly overshared this twaddle. If it had happened.

Why don't his sisters tell him to stfu, that he's making a fool of himself and no doubt causing immense distress to his 'blood relative' William.

I dread to think what him and Harry will come up with next. All sour grapes and guilt.

No. She wanted a house. Security said it could not be made secure as it was very close to a public road.
He offered her alternative houses on the estate. She said no.

He has proven it beyond all doubt now though so happy days.

He offered her somewhere to stay if she paid him a substantial amount of rent. Not a very generous way for an enormously wealthy landowner to treat his distressed sister, I think it's fair to say.

Totally irrelevant

I’ve followed the story of Charles Spencer for years and I’m sure he had some horrible experiences in childhood - of course he’s a very damaged person.

But clearly he’s also a very nasty man - you only have to look at his relationships with the many, many women in his life.

I can’t fathom this, though - I mean, there may be no love lost between him and KC, but what a thing to do to his nephews.

And - even if he doesn’t like KC - the man has cancer and is our HoS. What’s he thinking? That’s not a rhetorical question - I just can’t think what’s in it for him but money - but does that compensate for the terrible pain he will cause to an already troubled family?

Baffled.

See upthread for his treatment of wife No. 1.

Shocking, and that was just the start of a poor record in romantic relationships.
