Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

Pretty much like the royals. Charles controls all access to the money for everyone except William, who has his own duchy to find him and Catherine

Except King Charles is the oldest child, and Prince William is also the oldest child. Charles Spencer is not - he has older sisters.

I remember that time very well! D was cavorting around the Med with sleazy Dodi and the press were really going for her. Many people were not impressed at that point - the feeling was “What’s she playing at?”

The press coverage of Diana immediately leading up to her death was awful and incredibly misogynistic. That's why I found the way they did an instant pivot when she died so galling.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 21:47

You are wrong.
There was racism in the media against dodi. The feeling amongst a lot of the public is what is our beautiful Diana doing with this brown Muslim. So yes that is true.

No, Lilac - I’m not wrong.

Amongst the people I knew then it was more an awareness of the flashiness and dodginess of Dodi. “Eurotrash” would be more like the category he fitted into. Mohammed Fayed was known to be a shady character even then.

And that’s the way it is with the aristocracy. The eldest male child inherits.

How on earth can you declare that @Janiie doesn't understand the times? @Janiie has been on here for years. I don't always agree with her posts but she's been a long term poster - perhaps you've not been around enough to remember her?

But to be honest - making statements which have tenuous grounding in reality is your MO

To the snobs in Britain, Dodi was a "shopkeeper's son". Never mind the religion, it was the class.

Easy to do when the people involved are dead I suppose.

You can pretty much say what you like.

@adragoncalledaudrey I didn't see your earlier post and completely agree with you. It's so horrible for William and Harry, I can't understand why their uncle would include this in his book for the world to gossip about - surely he realizes how much this would upset them?

Telling them in private would be hard enough for them; surprising them in a book is just awful.😕

True. But the rule changed for the British royal family only in 2013. Before then it was the oldest male. Sisters didn't matter.

And once again, you don’t think that Charles was the slightest bit dodgy in using Diana as nothing more than a brood mare while carrying on with Camilla throughout his marriage ? When she was with Dodi she was divorced and entitled to see whoever she wanted - same as Charles. Why the disparity ?

What did you think of the mother's day cards William shared with the press, that his children made for a grandmother they had never even met?

Oh now isn’t that nice.

She was still their grandma.

And H isn’t too dissimilar in that regard.

She was still their mum.

Yep. I guess these are the people who thought it was funny to refer to carol Middleton as doors to manual.
Because you are not supposed to actually work for your money. Somehow that is wrong.
Terrible morals.

They had never met her. The children drew cards to a dead woman, and William shared them with the press.
Yes I think William was using Diana for publicity.
William doing his own card is fine. She is always his mother.

I kept well away from the craziness that seemed to take over the country then - it was hugely manipulated by the Press and by Tony Blair.

Diana was like the most people - a mixture of admirable and less admirable qualities.

Yes Diana was human.
And the public reaction was organic and unfathomable to people wh9 like to mock emotion expressed in public.

ThreadGuardDog · 17/09/2026 21:48

Charles married Diana despite being in love with another woman, who he continued to see throughout their marriage, and you think Dodi was the sleaze ?

Most definitely I do. A creep of the first order, and the person most to blame for her death.

Whipped up and manipulated emotions. Dangerous stuff.

I thought the country had gone mad!

To go even further back then would not have been unthinkable. If what he is saying now was true he'd have happily spouted it back then.

He's cashing in in Diana. He grabbiness is appalling.

Nonsense

Oh come on, that funeral was like something produced for a tacky Hollywood sob story, designed to pull at the heartstrings. The little white envelope with “Mummy” written in wobbly letters, Elton John re writing a song, Spencer’s speech, whose bright ideas were those that I wonder.

I didn't watch it that closely. I had a peek though. I do think that any funeral that involves the mother of youngish children is going to pull at the heartstrings.

What I thought was tacky was the wails from the crowd from people who didn't even know her. Her sons shouldn't have had to deal with that. Whatever other people connected decided to do, whatever. 'Mummy' isn't that unusual as I think they tend to use mummy rather than mum anyway.

This comment is beyond the pale. Dodi died.
There is no need to be quite so horrible.

William didn't profit off them and they didn't share any private details about his mother so they're really not comparable at all.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 22:07

Mummy written on an envelope and Elton John's song were wrong?? Wow.

Elton John like lots of gay men were great admirers of Diana because of her work around hiv and aids. The song was from that admiration.

Lots of well off children call their mother mummy. Perfectly normal.

BruFord · 17/09/2026 22:07

ThreadGuardDog · 17/09/2026 21:58

@ThreadGuardDog I don't see the connection with CS's book about his sister.

If he loved his sister, presumably he wouldn't want to hurt her children. And this will hurt them. If he detests KC, fair enough, he can avoid him like the plague, but putting this recollection in a book will hurt Diana's sons.

Elton John had a personal relationship with Diana. The wailing mob did not.
