Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

If A tells B that C 'sounded' elated does that prove that C was elated?

So you mean the lawsuit his mistress (now wife) filed against his wife? Or another one?

What was the grounds for that one, anyway?
”She told her husband that I’m shagging something that might make him want to stop shagging me?”

By vulgar do you mean his own description of yet another wife?

No. The lawsuit he filed and won against a national newspaper alleging that he refused a request from Diana to provide accommodation for her at the Althorp estate.

Ok, so you can let us know why she wasn’t speaking to him.

Meanwhile, I doubt she’d have wanted this misogynistic asshat to write a book about her.

She couldnt have the house she wanted, but he apparently offered others on the estate.

Janiie · 17/09/2026 18:51

What next for Charlie Spencer, Oprah? Maybe a little reality show on Netflix? <obviously not featuring any of his nc kids>.

adragoncalledaudrey · 17/09/2026 18:51

As others have said, I don’t think these revelations reflect well on CS at all.

Time will tell. I wonder if there will be the same backlash as someone else red headed and bitter received for their book.

I’m afraid that recollections may be varying all over the place.

It doesn't disprove it.

And she only couldn't have that house because of security concerns as it is very close to a public road.

I assume you want to derail the thread - I have no idea what that is all about. It is a shame as posters had varying views and it had been interesting until this.

Edited

Both events have been mentioned here so maybe it was you who actually failed to read the thread.

My points are on topic, as they relate to the credibility of the author, which is important to this thread.

You may want to throw stones and police in another direction.

Why couldn't she have the house she wanted why did Spencer call the shots on the family estate I wonder??

Absolutely not true

“It certainly solved many problems for him.”

What a sad outlook on life.

Absolutely not true

How do you know?

I mean - I can guess at things as much as you can guess at things.

Unless you were there at the time and are privy to things I am not. In which case - do tell? 😜

Why would he be elated? He knew he'd have 2 devastated dc and he'd also know some would paint him as the villain for years to come as we have indeed seen.

Spencer is talking bollocks. There's loads of clips all over X of him in interviews being a money grabber in the immediate aftermath of Diana's death and saying KC had been perfectly polite.

This is my feeling. If you want to think the absolute worst of KC then he wasn't going to be elated and showing it. If he was only thinking about himself then he'd have been very worried about him being the permanent villain, meaning that he'd never get his wish to marry Camilla or have her as his Queen.

But I don't feel as though he's that one dimensional. He would have been feeling a lot of different emotions - worry for his sons of course but I think he will also have felt very sad about Diana.

They didn't hate each other - they just made each other miserable as spouses.

You know you can feel sadness at the loss of an ex - even more so when you've shared a significant time together including children.

Whatever one thinks of Earl Spencer's recollection of his argument with Charles after Diana's death, I find it difficult to just dismiss it as unbelievable.
There is after all, a pretty revealing piece of evidence from Diana herself. In recordings made during the breakdown of her marriage, she described how, while pregnant with William at Sandringham, she threw herself down the stairs after Charles had told her she was “crying wolf” and that he wasn't going to listen because he was “going riding”. She said the Queen came out “absolutely horrified” and that when Charles returned, his response was “just dismissal, total dismissal”.

That obviously doesn't prove Earl Spencer's account of what Charles said in 1997. But it does give some historical context as to why Spencer's description of Charles as emotionally cold or detached may sound quite plausable. Diana herself portrayed him, at a particularly difficult point in their marriage, as responding to an extraordinary display of distress with remarkable emotional detachment.

And thats why I can understand why people are reluctant to just dismiss Spencer's account out of hand. Whether Charles actually said “we'll forget her soon enough” is ultimately a question of Spencer's recollection versus the Palace's position. But the picture of Charles as an emotionally remote husband isn't something Earl Spencer has simply invented out of thin air.

Did you know that when that story came out in Andrew Morton's book, Diana was criticised for putting her unborn child at risk? She then denied ever saying it and Andrew Morton had to get the tapes out to prove he didn't make it up.

In the biography of her I have (which is largely very sympathetic) an eyewitness says she tripped and fell down a set of 3 stairs, and everyone including Charles was extremely concerned. Although, maybe she fell down the stairs on 2 separate occasions.

Charles Spencers security said they could not guarantee Diana's security at that house as it was too close to a public road.

Meanwhile, I doubt she’d have wanted this misogynistic asshat to write a book about her.

Whatever it was, it wasn’t connected with the refusal to provide accommodation. The cottage Diana wanted on the Althorp estate was occupied by an employee, and in any case the police security advised it was unsafe as it was very close to a pubic road accessible to the press and media - CS had young children at the time and a media circus was one of his concerns. He offered Diana accommodation at various other properties but she refused. All of this is documented and was used as evidence in the court case he brought against the Daily mail for alleging much the same thing as you just did.

Why?

How do I know it’s a sad outlook to say the death of his children’s mother would create problems rather than solve them?

Nope.

I was asking how you can claim that it is absolutely not true that KC was elected?

I stand by my claim that he may have seen the opportunity as well as feeling sad for his kids as well as be worried about his own position in the public eye.

I mean, most human beings can hold many emotions at any time.

roxyro · 17/09/2026 19:04

The wonderful Earl Spencer who refused to allow his sister to seek refuge at his country pile when she was seeking some privacy.

He’s part of the same institution as the royals and has a bad track record with women. I don’t think he’s particularly reliable with his recollections and has an axe to grind so, no, I don’t set any store by his so called memories.

I think I read it in a self-help book, that the death of an ex-spouse is significant. At one time they were happy together and some times were good even if the less good times became more and more. It doesn't apply to only members of the RF. Some might feel nothing but pleased but some have a sadness and it's understandable.
Thank you for pointing out that they didn't hate one another.

Janiie · 17/09/2026 18:52

Why couldn't she have the house she wanted why did Spencer call the shots on the family estate I wonder??

Because not only did the police security deem it unsafe - it was close to a public road and accessible to press and media - but there was an employee resident there at the time. Diana was offered various other properties but refused them. He didn’t call the shots, he was acting in her best interests and that of his young children who would have been exposed to the inevitable media frenzy.

Her choice, not up to that arsehole. He wasn't the boss. If my sib lived on our family estate I'd decide which house I'd have.

For goodness sake read the thread - no he didn’t. The reasons for this have been explained over and over again, and only a few posts upthread.
