Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

Yes funny how ' commoners' like Kate and Sophie managed to do the not so difficult job of a Royal so so much better than RF themselves despite them apparently needing to be trained from birth. Maybe the Spencers bad behaviour is because their 'a bit thick and inbred' aristocratic blood has diluted the sheep farmer blood, not the other way round!

You could add meghan to that list, she's done a wonderful job of it, not

I’ve always found Charles to be a selfish whiny petulant twerp so I can well believe it.

It’s very much in line with the dismissive “whatever love means”.

He was furious Diana was more popular than him, and just wanted to be Camilla’s tampax, so he would have been delighted Diana was out of the way.

Edited

He was already divorced from Diana, so was free to marry Camilla, and do you seriously believe he was happy about his sons losing their mother?

It wasn’t their wedding day. It was their honeymoon. :(

Oh that’s ok then 🤣

I'm not sure the Middletons should be held up as not putting a foot wrong

Their company went bust owing £2.60million, a lot to small suppliers, £700K to HMRC and they had a COVID payout. So I am not sure that is not putting a foot wrong

They managed to move to a £5million property after Kate's marriage but couldn't pay those they owed

That's awful. No moral fibre.

She is irrelevant to a conversation about the British aristocracy or the working RF, being neither, but of course, she is doing her job, acting as a 'whataboutMeghan?' whenever any criticism of the Royals is uttered on the RF board!

I've often thought, if you landed on a strange planet and the first person you met said to you, " Well here on Zog it's like this. We have a top family who arent particularly talented, and who demand you kowtow to them, and who go around waving a bit, who you have to pay a lot of money for, and who try to get even more money out of you, and whose friends feed you lies to keep you supporting them, and who fight with each other like cats and dogs behind closed doors, .........so how about it, would you like to stay on Zog ........" ....your jaw would drop to the floor and run screaming back to your space ship and zoom off somewhere else. The RF does seem very Emperor's new clothes and I cant help thinking we accept it just because it's always been there.

Sorry, but people repeatedly bringing up a tetchy couple of seconds over a pen as a sign of Charles' temper 😁

…and yet we saw it and you can’t un-see it.
Camilla’s frozen look was illuminating too. That was very obviously not the first time she had witnessed his petulance.

Take another look at the video of his behaviour.

It was a fairly persistent tabloid rumour, originally from November 1980 which claimed a mystery woman - allegedly Diana - was smuggled onto the royal train to spend the night with Charles. Both Diana and Buckingham Palace denied the story at the time, and palace records of their whereabouts at the time subsequently provided the evidence that it was false. But years later the rumour resurfaced, re-written to suggest the mystery visitor was actually Camilla, the night before Charles and Diana’s wedding. But again official records proved it to be false. They placed Charles at Buckingham Palace on the eve of his wedding.

Edited

No Charles was on the train carriage. Reporters were camped outside with live coverage, coverage that was pretty boring. The journalists spotted a female figure getting into the train carriage when it was dark.

Unless you are suggesting he went onto the train, sneaked out when no photographers were looking, and sneaked back in again in the morning?

It was a few seconds. We've all had moments which, if filmed, wouldn't show us in a good light. He was grieving and under massive strain at the time.

Its not about ‘affection’ for the Windsors or the queen .
It was ignorance .

Now we know how they have covered up for Andrew and other Epstein links - William’s much trumpeted Earth shot was cofounded by a close associate of Epstein - how could any decent person have any respect for them never mind affection .

I don't disagreed, Ukisgaslit, but even if was based in ignorance there was still fairly widespread affection for the Queen, appropriate or not

It was also widely recognised that things would never be quite the same when she died, but even I didn't expect things to become this bad

I don't know if you saw Channel 4's recent "The royals: time to go?" with John Humphreys, but it was notable that even the monarchists he interviewed had little of substance to say beyond sneering at him. Worst of all to me was the appalling Jeremy Hunt's suggestion that those supposed to be "above the fray" shouldn't be questioned, which IMO goes some way to explaining the situation we're in

Are you his ex wife?

Which one?
The one he cheated on whilst pregnant.
The one he dumped shortly after she had given birth?
The one he dumped over text?

It was about a minute of him constantly complaining how awful it was.

Fair point.

Of course, Sophie very much put a foot wrong with the Fake Sheik scandal in 2001. But she has been rehabilitated since then.
It’s amazing how the image of different royals can change.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 16:38

Generally though the royals who marry in do a better job than those born to it.

LipglossAndLies · 17/09/2026 16:38

Charles wrote a book, no statmeent needed to tell him his recollections may vary or be clouded.

Interesting they decide this is the moment to push out a statment, there have been many other situations where a response would have been better to put out.

Sonato · 17/09/2026 16:39

its generally well documented that the king fought for diana more in death than he ever did in her life (asking the Queen if she would rather the mother of the future king of englands body be brought home in the back of a harrods van etc.) so I dont buy this.

Charles book complained that Elizabeth and Philip were terrible parents. They didn't put out a snide statement saying his memories were confused and jumbled.

So. Who is up for discussing Doria?

Charles, who would have been better marrying Camilla in the first place, as he apparently wished.

But she didn't did she?

She wanted APB.

Yes she was after APB.
and Charles had numerous girlfriends. Several including cOB were married women.

Odd though it is, though, the system means that occasionally there are things the RF can and do do which are really helpful. I remember a case where six Air Force officers were accused of sabotaging planes in Zimbabwe when Mugabe was president. The evidence against them was extremely suspect and they were acquitted after a long time being held in custody awaiting trial. However, they were immediate rearrested.

The UK quietly let it be known that if they remained in custody a planned visit by the then Prince Charles would be cancelled. Suddenly, Mugabe decided the officers were innocent after all and released them.

I fully agree with you.
Their two sons in law, Prince William and James Matthews could easily have coughed up a few bob. Or they could have sold the multi million pound house.
The Middletons then seen swanning it in the Wimbledon and Ascot VIP areas while those hard working small suppliers and HMRC had to suck it up.
And yes I know they sold the company for a pittance and the debts went with it.

But morally it was disgusting imo.
I wonder did their employees get redundancy payments ?

Perhaps his memories weren't confused and jumbled?

Certainly sending him to Gordonstoun was a pretty appalling decision.
