Earl Spencer's book on Diana is stolen

Warning - DM link ahead...
Copies of Earl Spencer's sensational book about Princess Diana have been stolen from a lorry – just before its exclusive serialisation in the Daily Mail.
The memoir – Swan Song: Diana, My Sister – includes revelations about Diana's deeply unhappy marriage with the then Prince of Wales.
It also describes the crisis that engulfed the Royal Family after her death in a car crash almost 30 years ago.
Last night a publishing insider said: 'Earl Spencer has kept his silence for nearly 30 years and what he has to say about the King's reaction when Diana died is utterly devastating.'
But, in an astonishing development, the Mail can reveal that a truck packed with thousands of copies of the book was broken into after it was parked overnight in a lay-by in the Netherlands earlier this week.
Just four copies, which had been wrapped in black plastic to hide their contents, were stolen in what publishing sources believe could have been an audacious plot to steal the highly anticipated book of the year before it hits the shelves.

I am not a fan of the royals so not saying they havent, but in what ways have they briefed against diana and used her memory?

I cant summarise 30 years of media manipulation

They had been blackening her name before her death but it ramped up soon after esp in order to try to rehabilitate Camilla .

The ‘special advisors’ brought in were ex tabloid . One won an award for the Camilla campaign ( can that be true ? I’m sure I read it but that’s a bit transparent isn’t it ?)

Journalists have admitted on camera that they have info from the palace - and I don’t mean when the next walk about will be .

The Windsor strategy is well known and basic
Throw someone to the wolves to protect / elevate another closer to the throne .

Very out of date and it’s failing .
All that effort over 30 years and it has been undone by one extract from a book.

So the highly revered Diana who since her death has almost reach saint like status has been 'blackened' in the media since her death yet no examples? Okay.

Ukisgaslit · 18/09/2026 10:07

@Crosswurd

I looked it up. Mark Boland won a PR professional award in 2001 .
He ran a PR campaign called by the palace ‘project Parker Bowles’
Surely the award wouldn’t explicitly mention Parker Bowles ? That’s rather self defeating.
Any way decide for yourself

I see the PR everywhere . It’s constant. I stopped looking at the BBC after Elizabeth’s death as the propaganda was so overt .

The thing about propaganda though is it faces a difficult battle re social media . The bots are still obvious - the same tabloid line repeated endlessly.

The point is , Diana’s popularity has been mainly unaffected by the campaign .

Well yes I get PR about making themselves look better, not seeing where Diana comes into it though since her death.

Ukisgaslit · 18/09/2026 10:10

They used the same line repeatedly

Diana was ‘crazy’ / Camilla is a good old thing

It’s well known . Search for threads here there are plenty of them I’m sure .

The long campaign hasn’t worked .

Is it me or is the book a lame duck? If the biggest revelations are the King said something out of turn (which I don't believe for a second) and the Queen offered to reinstate Diana's HRH then I think the publisher and Daily Mail have been conned.

Is it me or is the book a lame duck?

No, it’s not you.
Yes, it is.

Camillas campaign has been very successful though. Yes she is still not a popular royal, but she was really hated by the public years ago.

The campaign has been to get her to do DV work, because this will appeal to women her biggest detractors. Talk a lot about her being fun and liking gin and jokes. Talk about Charles and Camilla being very much in love but forced apart by the palace. This is not my viewpoint, it was outlined in industry articles at the time about the or award for the campaign.

What has worked against camillas pr is her real personality i.e. who her friends are such as Jeremy clarkson, and her obvious media manipulation. But generally the campaign was a success.

Charles also obviously paid a lot of money for camillas clothes and advisers. In spite of misogynistic comments, she is usually extremely well dressed for a woman if her age and position. Her wedding dress especially was a triumph.

OneLilacHedgehog · 18/09/2026 09:45

I agree, I think it will sell well. I think the fact he is a historian will help to sell the book.

You do realise that being “a historian” doesn’t mean that you never mis remember events or not have bias? You do realise that his note taking is unlikely to have taken place when he is on an emotionally charged state due to having lost his sister and argued with her ex husband? You do realise that him being “a historian” doesn’t mean not make him a god?

I think it IS looking like a lame duck, and the majority don’t believe the revelations so far, CS personal reputation is taking a beating from the general public, despite what some people would like to think.

At this point, most people accept it was very wrong to have William & Harry walk behind their mothers cortège, so it’s not some mega revelation.

Ukisgaslit · 18/09/2026 10:34

@OneLilacHedgehog

Oh yes - the domestic violence charity

That is similar to William’s environmental charity - ie if you take a helicopter between your many empty homes and it’s a bad look - adopt a charity to hide under .

That approach ( look to where you are vulnerable to criticism and adopt a charity ) is a bit old fashioned and transparent.
No wonder people are cynical about them

Exactly, if he was writing up notes immediately after he got a call to tell him his sister was dead, I would think that would be very odd indeed.

Crosswurd · 18/09/2026 09:55

Well from their own mouths Harry in hindsight was glad he was a part of it & William recognises it was a balance of duty:

Prince Harry 'very glad' to walk behind Diana's coffin - BBC News https://share.google/6NtbGKIUJyEH3oGu3

So maybe whoever forced them did know best afterall? Again, no scenario would have made losing their mother any easier.

Edited

Mmmm, what the princes disclose in public about it may be very different to what they actually felt. Neither of them at the time were going to say that they felt traumatised by walking behind their mother’s coffin with a crowd of one million watching and an audience of over 2 billion, but it would be extremely understandable if they were.

If I had been them, I would have been very worried about breaking down in front of everyone (teen boys are sensitive about showing emotion at the best of times) and you could see Harry looking absolutely bewildered and William trying to hold himself together.

It was an extremely testing thing to do for an adult never mind a young person.

Trainbleu · 18/09/2026 10:44

Crosswurd · 18/09/2026 09:14

Because its not that easy. Charles would be subject to disclosure meaning he would be compelled to hand over an array of artefacts from the time which risk being made public. Even if nothing bad in them, would you want any diaries or whatever made public? Spencers notes would be considered if they exist but wouldnt be enough by themselves, so it would involve seeking witnesses etc which even if there were any, as so much time has passed would unlikely be considered reliable. It also once again drags Diana (who has been dead for nearly 3 decades) into this mess. All of these men should let her rest in peace.

It appears the Royals are never alone, there seems to always be some lackey or other hanging around in their presence, from what I can gather Charles doesn’t even make or accept his own phone calls, someone else is putting them through to him or connecting the calls on his behalf, I am guessing Charles would probably have witnesses who could attest to his demeanor or comments through those calls / conversations. I don’t know the law, but I suspect a witness supporting Charles would trump a personal note in a court of law, if it came to it.

OneLilacHedgehog · 18/09/2026 10:50

Demeanour is always a matter of opinion.
What words he actually said would be more important. And unless a staff member had written notes taken at the time, why would he remember the exact words 29 years later? After all a staff member must constantly hear and see revelations the public never know. So why would the exact words in this conversation stand out? A good barrister would rip any staff member to shreds. And earl Spencer can afford a good barrister.

But you think that Charles Spencer can remember the exact words that were said to him because “he is a historian and takes notes” So you have completely contradicted yourself here

Eta and why would Charles Spencer remember after 29 years if you have just said it was unlikely that memories would be clear after 29 years?

People will buy any book about Diana.

The Americans in the first car to come through the tunnel after her wrote a book. It was fiction! People still bought it.

I talked to that lady once for other reasons and she was obsessed with telling everyone that they were there. Another person selfishly using Diana’s death for their own means, like Spencer now.

It is grotesque and Ghoulish, like this thread.

But leave her alone.

Whats even worse is she is supporting women who have been abused...but stayed deathly silent on whats taken place much closer to home with Andrew. Very quiet when it turns out VG wasn't lying.
