Being a private citizen doesn't necessarily stop governments supporting "their" charities, Jeff, but it obviously works best if it really is seen to be the charity that's supported rather than someone who fronts it up

And in Harry's case that could prove difficult, especially with Invictus being notoriously vague around where the money goes

Really? I thought it was booked for the 18th September? So Charlotte Griffiths reported incorrectly and there was never a fund raising dinner scheduled?

Invictus was never a royal patronage; that's why it remained with Harry when other patronages were returned to the Crown.

There's also the brutal fact that in modern warfare, as in Ukraine, there are fewer military injuries because so much more of it is fought remotely through drones etc. So the pool is dwindling. And adding in e.g. the IDF is always going to be massively politically contentious - not that I'd expect H to have any clue about why that is.

There is absolutely zero justification for the cost of Invictus, especially compared to the US Warrior Games on which it was modelled. IIRC the price tag for that event is under $5m and includes more support for competitors than Invictus does.

True blue but it had all the appearance of one…and I don’t think Harry would correct any assumptions, I have not forgotten his speech in Ukraine for invictus…..on a podium surrounded by the U.K. flags with HRH Prince Harry , the Duke of Sussex on the display behind him!

Most of the rumours saying it was not even happening on x were from certain accounts.

I don't know either way, Jeff, but looked it up and apart from the "Diana Awards" in November there doesn't seem to be anything about a dinner apart from all the noise about Harry not attending it

I think @bluegreygreen is correct in correcting me over ‘match funding’ and that the government underwrite is operating more like a contingency fund.

The bottom line though is that it’s not an out-and-out grant or handout to Harry, and the Invictus organisation has to raise tens of millions or the Games simply can’t go ahead.

I think you’re right, Jeff, that the ‘private citizen’ reminder could well put a cat among the pigeons down in the Gov Accounts Fiscal Pedants’ Section.

Thanks. Just refreshed my memory. The Chair of the Board of Trustees Lord Allan was presumably supposed to rein Harry in and keep an eye 👀 on things. Instead, we now have years of creeping political embarrassment and the redacted Whistler expense sheets … and a Games that cost many tens of millions where competitors are allegedly left uninsured. Crazy stuff.

Yes I was trying to say that the statement has clarified the standing and given the government and new labour pm a perfect excuse to back out of an agreement that was floated by more sympathetic mps .etc….etc .
