It would have been better if they had kept the costs down, and far more in keeping with the scale of the event.

I agree

IG is a niche event - does it really need to be 8 days long? I think a more focussed long weekend event would be much better. Part of the problem is Harry's delusions of grandeur... a few years ago he was talking about it being as big as the Paralympics and making money through selling TV rights 😂In fact I think he hired someone to do this ...🙄

To be fair the head of the Ugandan military has also demanded Jay Z hand Beyoncé to him to marry so possibly another loose cannon son.

😂😂 brilliant, would he also take meg as her and bey are besties. The world is going to hell led by lunatics.

I do feel a bit sad about invictus as its a fabulous idea but its struggling. Whether that's to do with Harry or something else, I don't know, but I doubt it was ever entirely his idea (maybe he just agreed to put his name to it?)

Wow, so much drama. And it proves the points made over many threads that Invictus has been foolishly allowed by HM Government to creep into the territory of 'political liability', just to satisfy the ego of a once-royal patron with Founder's Syndrome and an avaricious spouse.

It's ridiculous that the Ugandan military, handed in 2024 to the Ugandan President's allegedly unstable son (also a presidential candidate and anti-free press authoritarian), was ever invited to join Invictus for Birmingham 2027. Was it about the $$$? Hmmm. Yes.

Further, shouldn't Invictus by now have sorted out the slight issue of the presumed attendance of the Israeli IDF and armed Shin Bet security personnel on UK civilian soil? And just who the fuck is liasing with the Foreign Ofice, because guess what guys, HaM super-stan Yvette Cooper isn't there any more and her replacement is busy imposing sanctions on behalf of the UK.

And also, the UK government money for Invictus is matchfunding, not outright grant. I hope the Ingriftus grubby mitts are being slapped back from thinking it's an ATM.

Agree with most of what you say @AutumnCrowWithdrawsMajestically (your name changes are majestic!)
but about this:
And also, the UK government money for Invictus is matchfunding, not outright grant. I hope the Ingriftus grubby mitts are being slapped back from thinking it's an ATM.

Anywhere I've looked, I find that the government money is an 'underwrite of up to £26m', but I haven't seen reference to matched funding.

Well if PH was hoping to smooth things over so that KC would attend the Invictus games next year, things aren't of to a great start!

Hello!
I'm new around these parts and this may not be the place to say but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else so sorry if it offends or is inappropriate..but...
If I understand it correctly HAM are saying they want to be public figures.
William and Catherine are remaining tight-lipped about the whole thing.
HAM have mugged off KC enought for him to send 'the letter'.
So, surely now is the time for W & C to come out guns blazing. The summer is over, the kids are back at school, they now need to be mopping up all the hospital, charity, whatever visits in grand style with lots of publicity so there is just nowhere where second-rates HAM will be wanted as who wants to court bad publicity or no publicity for their cause?
Like I said, apologies if this is not the place ....

I agree - W & C need to come out all guns blazing.
I think KC letter will just spur HAM to ramp up their ‘public’ appearances - A & L will be drafted in too as soon as they are deemed old enough.

I really should be working but I looked at Travelyst website (still doesn't really explain its actual purpose) but it states it is "lead by the Dook on a pro bono basis " does that mean he's not getting a salary from this ??

Nobody knows what Travalyst does ... after 6 years! It seems to mostly be a talking shop where they sit around discussing "sustainability" before getting their flights home. 😂

And while we are at it - what happened to the Archewell millions from the old Foundation? The "rebrand" seems to have dropped off the face of the world and HAM seem to ignore it totally these days and haven't mentioned it since the foundation closed with around $8.3 million in capital - although in their last accounts they spent $5 million on expenses but only raised $2million. Is the Archewell "Philanthropies" active?

Typical HAM. They just don't think but H probably assumes he will actually be King by the time Ingriftus comes around. He's that dim

I think the IG are just too expensive for the times we live in. Look how the Commonwealth Games has had to be scaled back in order to survive. That is much more prestigious and established. A hefty dose of realism is needed but Harry would not take note even if it walloped him round the back of his head.

My2cents1975 · Yesterday 15:39

While Uganda's response does bring some levity, the broader and graver issue is the impact it has on UK foreign relations. Upsetting an unstable and unpredictable leader is never a good idea as there's no telling what their next move will be.

Uganda is a key transit and security hub for East-Central Africa. There is no upside for the UK to disturb a large refugee hosting hub (if I recall one of the largest in sub-saharan Africa with over a million refugees).

The General can take a page out of the Russian playbook and push refugees along the long and risky path to the UK as a form of revenge on HaM, especially if their Sussex Squad continue their reckless social media assault disparaging the General and Uganda (alongside it being William's fault, as ever).

IMHO, these endless clapbacks via official spokespeople and via proxies are going to eventually create a genuine diplomatic crisis for KC3. I would be unsurprised if this crisis came within the next 12 months.

Bigcat25 · Yesterday 15:39

Does anyone feel slightly bad for them at this point? I realize Invictus hasn't had the best transparency with their finances, but just bc the royal family isn't involved with Invictus doesn't mean they oppose any charity H is involved in, as this general seems to be implying.

I know, @AutumnCrowWithdrawsMajestically, so given that it's unlikely Invictus will attract enough for a "match" to cover the costs, it'll be interesting to see if either local or central government coughs up regardless

I'd like to think it's such obvious "public money" that we should be able to find out easily, but am not sure even of that

Just bc the royal family isn't involved with Invictus doesn't mean they oppose any charity H is involved in, as this general seems to be implying

I don't suppose they opposed the charities per se, more what tends to happen to them once H&M get involved. As said it probably looked like a jolly good way of keeping Harry occupied, but predictably it's not turning out like that - the more so since Meghan got her claws on it

Ooh err missus, you're taking a gamble with that configuration! Didn't you get the memo from the last thread "And can you explain why so many of these daft 'contributions' come from pps with usernames adjective+colour+noun? Interesting!" @CoffeeCantata

Invictus was developed by the Royal Foundation of the (then) Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, with the intent that Prince Harry would then take the lead on it as one of his patronages.

That origin story has changed over the years to the current story that Harry alone created Invictus.

Chrysanthemumsinpots · Yesterday 15:46

Invictus seems a great idea - supporting injured veterans. But veterans are soldier that fight wars and not always on our side. You cannot completely seperate them from the people who controlled the armies they were part of however much you might wish to. Politically it was always likely to be extremely risky once you expanded beyond a few very clear allies.

Oh , oh , oh ….why only now after reading yours and autumn posts have I suddenly realised something!! …the statement…!!! Ham are to be treated as private citizens…they do not represent the U.K. or monarchy in any form!!!….no public money!!! ….charities will be responsible for expenses!!! ….this means invictus is now a private non royal affiliated charity!! , how can the government justify giving them money now???

They still have sufficient that income from investments should give them a very comfortable life. Not at the level they might like but comfortable by anyone else’s standards. They would be as well to find themselves some more domestic interests though to keep themselves occupied.

Absolutely agree with this.
Many, many people step back from public life and live productively and well. Obscurity doesn’t mean penury. They could live comfortably off their many investments and never have to do a stroke of work. Or they could set up some sort of business and see if they could grow a new brand that didn’t have their names all over it.

I don’t think they are running out of money, but I do think they’re running out of ways to make more money, and for someone as venally greedy as MM that is crisis territory.

Ditto, has me laughing out loud too.
"Ingrifters" is brilliant.

I'd forgotten what a hunk Jeff was also. These threads are a public service indeed.

We just need the Charles Squad to turn up and it'll be perfect.

Tbf, it’s not entirely unreasonable for posters to think that Charles can sometimes appear be behind the curve (in HaM-speak).
