Well , my son's DP ( who is American , Yale Alumnus ) says Northwestern is a well respected university. So in the absence of any personal knowledge I'm going with it's a very good university. 😊

They paid $14.6m for their house in 2020 - property has rocketed in Montechito since then - now worth double at $29m.

They had a $10m mortgage on it so still $20m quids in on that deal - although the local taxes and mortgage repayments are reported to be $600 / year - so a massive debt to service if no steady income stream

A house is only worth what someone will pay for it

DandyAF · 21/08/2026 10:59

Northwestern is a very good university, ranked usually as in the top 10 in the US.

As I said before, it is statistically much harder to get into than a Russell Group university on average.

You need very high SAT scores and good grades in your subjects, unless you on a sports or music etc scholarship, which doesn't apply to MM. Northwestern's theatre programme, which MM was part of, is especially highly regarded.

That is evidence that she is pretty academic/did well academically, and it's and can't be rationally discounted. Harry's GCSE and A level results as relied on as proof to say he didn't seem particularly academic.

I have a feeling that her children, or at least one of them (either one), will do well academically. Personally I don't feel it's that hard to do at school-age when you work very hard, have good teaching, the right environment, lots of tuition, and are taught how to point-score well in certain exams.

DandyAF · 21/08/2026 11:03

Typical, I make several typos in a post about good academics 🤦‍♀️Grin

SheinSussex · 21/08/2026 11:07

My friend’s daughter turned down Yale to go to North Eastern so I would presume that North Western would be if the same calibre.

SheinSussex · 21/08/2026 11:08

Of the same calibre. What is it with the typos today?!

Rather ironic if Uncle Charles offers them a place at Althorp when he refused to provide sanctuary to Diana.

Anyway I assume this means a Netflix 30th anniversary of her death documentary is off the table now?

I was thinking the opposite, Charles book on Diana could be the basis for that documentary and will
give it far more credibility if he is involved. I wonder if that is the ‘project’ Meghan has reportedly been offered!

@CoffeeCantata

IMO intellectual and academic can be two different things. I was talking about her being academic.

I feel MM has a lack of interest in some people and some events, rather than an inability to focus, but I've not seen footage of her at events for many years so can't say.

I have ADHD and fidget a lot (and in fact the fidgeting is what helps me focus) but I also am very academic. A bit bemusing to think that my neurological ability to stay still often in overwhelming environments would lead people to think I was unintellectual, but so be it Grin

I get what you're saying and I completely acknowledge the difference between being intelligent and being intellectual ( I tried to explain this in my post).

I have a friend who's a journalist. She's much cleverer than me - makes short work of extreme sudokos and other mind-bending puzzles. She gets to the point of a topic very quickly and thinks super-fast. But she's not at all intellectual. She doesn't like literature, classical music, art or theatre. She hasn't the patience for it and doesn't like analysing or discussing things or ideas.
information she needs and how to get to the point...but she isn't interested in detail, nuance, reflection etc. She wants her questions answered concisely and quickly and can't stand fence-sitting or contemplation!

We're very different people. I'm slower on the uptake but would say I'm intellectual - I can't get enough of literature, literary and art theory etc etc.

But I think Meghan IS intelligent but not intellectual. Nothing wrong with that in someone's private life, but I think royals have a duty to take an interest in cultural matters and this was always a problem for Meghan. She couldn't even pretend to be interested in theatre (oddly), classical music or art - all things which so many celebs at least claim to like.

CoffeeCantata · 21/08/2026 11:20

My post is full of typos too...in fact, a whole line has disappeared. Weird, or what/

What? Meghan is going to play Diana in the drama-reconstructions?

I'd argue that the above is a sign your friend is not cultural, rather than not intellectual. I know intellectual people who don't like the above but are very into physics etc.

But I agree with you that MM is intelligent but probably not intellectual. The question I asked of someone else, that you answered though, was about them not seeing signs that she was academic. Which seemed strange to me given that her getting into Northwestern, the only evidence we really have, is an objective sign she was above-average academically!

I mean, with all her Diana outfit copies and poses, she has arguably been practising for this for some time...

Meghan went to Northwestern in Chicago, Northeastern is in Boston. Neither are Ivy League, which Yale is, but Northwestern is top tier, incredibly competitive to get into, similar acceptance rates to the Ivies and similar academic rigour (Northeastern is less prestigious and not in the same category as Northwestern)

Dont forget she went there almost 30 years ago, it was a whole different academic landscape then and less competitive admissions in general.

the7Vabo · 21/08/2026 04:35

I think both theories are possible. They always wanted to be royals, they don’t actually want their kids to be American nobodies.

They also have much less of a chance of getting their hands on anything when W becomes King, so they want Kc to set them up before that.

More likely the penny has dropped if H wants the kids to know his Dad he needs to be in the UK.
Harry must have great memories of his Grandparents and long summers at Balmoral and Christmas at Sandringham if he wants that he needs to make it happen.
And time maybe isn't on his side.

TBH i think its a combination of factors I don't think its one thing.

BasiliskStare · 21/08/2026 11:34

I think there's a lot of justified criticism of MM. However , for me, not about Northwestern. I agree with others though , I do also think there's a difference between being above averagely academic and intellectually curious. Anyway , by the by.

😂😂😂, well that’s a thought, I’m sure she would be gagging for that role. director, narrator of her mother in law, her children’s grandmother, her husbands mum. Would she be able to refer to her as Princess Diana at all ?

She didn't study academic subjects though. Drama and International Relations. I see no evidence at all that she's learned much about either subject.

LOL at international relations. She creates havoc wherever she goes. She does create plenty of drama though.

The international relations might be where the international bases comes from.

Andy in The Devil Wears Prada went to Northwestern & the implications in the movie were that it was very impressive

It's ridiculous to say IR isn't an academic subject Grin

It's regarded as one, being a hybrid of politics, law, philosophy & economics. It's a competitive degree. The grades required to study IR & politics at Bristol for example is higher than the grades required to study English Lit there. Although you may not regard that as academic either...

And a drama degree requires a lot of writing and critical analysis.

To get into a high-ranking US university on any course, you need to a good SAT score and so need to be academic. That is just a fact, regardless of whether you want to accept it or not Wink

Arjan · 21/08/2026 12:06

DandyAF · 21/08/2026 08:34

It's one thing to look down on MM justifiably, but this is just ignorant. At least do some basic googling first.

International Relations is a respected course, and is academic.

It is difficult to "talk yourself" into an American university - unless you are on a sports or other skills-based scholarship or have rich parents - because you have to have a certain SATs score.

SATs is kind of a measure of general intelligence. I've done it.

Northwestern where MM went is a very good school. You need a high SAT score to get in. The admittance rate is 7%. This is far higher than the admission rate for "a red brick Russell Group" that another poster compared Northwestern to.

Her teachers at high school said that she got very good grades.

I'm not sure what evidence you'd expect to see of her being particularly academic given her line of profession?

When Meghan was accepted in the 90’s the acceptance rate was closer to 50%, they also had a strong diversity program, and race /affirmative action enrollments were a huge driver to increase diversity, so I guess she also applied as a person of colour, which would have massively boosted her chances of being accepted.

The acceptance for Northwestern is now around 7%, because the number of applicants applying has quadrupled since the 90’s.

There used to be a frequent poster in the HAM threads a long time ago whose British son went to Northwestern after going to a UK public school. She was very proud of him for getting in there, so I think she'd agree that it's a well respected university. She may still be on these threads under a name change!

CoffeeCantata · 21/08/2026 12:11

Serenster · 21/08/2026 10:25

To my mind I think that suggests that Meghan doesn’t have a hinterland - we see absolutely no evidence of any private enthusiasms beyond her carefully cultivated public persona.

I think this is what I’ve been trying to say. She has always struck me as shallow, not a deep thinker (except where calculation and manipulation is concerned) and with no genuine, long-held personal passions.

Considering she is such a self-promoter we would have heard and seen evidence of M at the theatre, opera, concert hall, latest art show, historical exhibitions, literary festivals etc.

But we never have. I only say this because while that’s her choice in her private life- there’s no rule that says you have to have cultural and intellectual interests - in the sort of life she aspires to (as for the RF) you have to at least pay lip service to these things to be credible.
