I also think this suggests Charles is incredibly unwell. If he passes before making up with Harry then there’s no room for harry to rehabilitate his image, plus of course that would be very traumatic for Harry.

My guess is that theyre gone by December anyway. It’s going to be awful for Megan and she’s going to get so much street harassment. Can’t see how she can reasonably live here unless she never leaves the house.

Re the Montecito Mansion:

A New York Post exclusive (published August 19, 2026) notes that local Santa Barbara/Montecito luxury real estate sources report “rumblings” of a potential sale, with strong broker interest. One broker (Jason Streatfeild of Douglas Elliman) suggested it could trade off-market under NDA, or eventually list publicly, estimating a possible list price around $75 million and a sale in the $55–65 million range based on recent high-end Montecito sales. High carrying costs—reportedly over $600,000 a year in mortgage payments and taxes alone (tied to a $9.52 million adjustable-rate mortgage)—are cited as a possible factor. Sources indicated a listing (if it happens) might not occur for a few months, or that the couple could wait a year to see how the UK move goes. nypost.com

Exclusive | Prince Harry and Meghan Markle likely to list Montecito mansion as staggering monthly costs revealed: sources

A source in the Santa Barbara luxury real estate market told The Post there “have been rumblings” the couple will sell the property, adding that “every broker wants that listing.”

My first thoughts too... hope M doesn't bring her drama to the school gates.. how does one go about organising playdates or inviting L&A to birthday parties.
As they are non working royals & now "ordinary citizens" will parents even be informed?

You organise it with the nanny, who is the one actually doing the school run every day...

I think it's more likely that they just can't bear Kate & William's popularity and credibility on the world stage and want back into the Royal Family.

I'd say Royal Family life doesn't look so bad after all for HAM😂

This is bad news indeed. I cannot stand either of them. I think they are hoping to bask in the limelight which they imagine will pass to them from W&K. It won't. William and Kate are extremely popular in this country. Also, the British public won't forget or forgive very easily the horrible way these two treated the late Queen and Prince Philip.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 20/08/2026 08:36

Very understandable to come back, with Charles' illness and education considerations.

For people who haven’t made many, many public statements about how that is not even a remote possibility, maybe.

That's quite a jump from the ?$16 million? They paid in 2020. Could the value have gone up that much?

But i agree they probably can't afford the running costs and need to downsize, given how much H has wasted in court cases combined with their lack of earning power.

She'd need to apply for immigration status.

Just as Harry needed to for the states. I do wonder if something has gone wrong with his immigration status I don't think he was ever given American citizenship.

That's true. They seem to rely on her a lot though and she seems like one of the main contacts for the kids. Not moving with her seems quite unusual. The whole situation is so unexpected. I wonder what's happened. They wouldn't do this just for an arguably slightly better school.

What educational considerations? They had wonderful schools in California..
Besides this is mumsnet & don't you know "a bright child will do well anywhere"!

They’re definitely not here to live quietly in the countryside.

Quickchant · 20/08/2026 08:40

I remember reading years ago that Harry would inherit Highgrove. I wonder if Charles changed his will following their falling out. I think they thought they could make megabucks if living in the US and allowed to do whatever business they wanted. I don't think this has turned out to be true. Yes they are extremely wealthy but they have also have an extremely extravagant lifestyle. UK life could be very comfortable for them if they can build bridges.

Are they close to Eugenie? She also splits time between Portugal and UK and plans to educate her kids in the UK.

Did you mean that Harry and Meghan haven't made statements about being concerned for Charles? Or Charles hasn't made a statement about being that ill?

It's a surprise announcement

It's been said that they will live outside London and the children are enrolled in school - so presumably the intention is to stay for a while; possibly to cement their children's place in the royal family for the future, after all they are the king's grandchildren

If they are in a secluded manor house in the home counties and kids at a local prep there is no reason why they couldn't live a quiet family life, if that's what they really want. They could redeem themselves and take on genuine charity work and quietly regain the affection that the majority of the public had for them in the early days

They may be the KIng's grandchildren, but once William becomes King, they will be the King's nephew/niece. Look at how insignificant Princess Margaret's children, David and Sarah, became as the Queen's children grew up and had their own children. They are NOT important at all.

2026letsgo · 20/08/2026 08:41

@OneCheekyDeer I agree there’s a lot of supposition around them.

However the dislike of them is due to their own actions. Everything they do and say is a load of old bollocks. See previous statements about not coming back to thd UK. I don’t think people would even mind the bollocks if they had made their own way and not traded on the royal connection.

I wonder if Archie might be going to Ludgrove (Harry’s old school) Hope not, as one of my favourite walks is on a public footpath path that runs between the school and their sports field, and it will probably be closed if he’s at the school.

Surely not for a private citizen? Archie won't receive security I wouldn't think, especially if H & M don't receive it. I would think that unless they're attending an official event, there would be no special protections for the children.

Yes we can and have done so based on what has come out of the mouths and actions of these two twats.

And you don't think anything has been edited to get the programmes/papers/media’s the publicity and money from gullible public? Loool, thanks for proving my point. Unless of course you know these people personally and have literally heard it from their own mouths 🐑

William and Kate are popular because they don't go for Hollywood style glamour. They scrub up well, but their image is of steady, thoughtful service.

I have no idea how much that is their true personality, and how much is PR advice. But it is an image that plays well here in the UK.

They do seem to have a group of loyal, long standing friends, which suggests they are decent people themselves. Very privileged, of course, but they don't burn through relationships and that is a good sign of personal qualities.

DandyAF · 20/08/2026 08:46

Ha, this popped up in my active list after I logged on to MN after many years away. I coined the acronym 'HAM' back in February 2020 so it's funny to see it's still going!

I've been out of the loop and not following what they are up to since then, but I'm rolling my eyes at them coming back to the UK. I saw someone mention that they think it has something to do with Harry's American visa, and I think that may be a good guess. Cynically I also wonder if they want to get their feet under the table/be established in the UK for Harry to maybe write another book in future about the King's last years.

Kate has always been so close to her family & is so lucky to always have them onside. The Middletons have never put a foot wrong.
Look at the relationship of Meghan & her father, disgraceful & not even inviting him to the wedding & all played on in the media.
Then asking KC to walk her up the aisle, look at the thanks he got!
Kate & the Middletons would never behave like that!

It's been going on for years. The obsession is bizarre.

The majority of these posts aren't hateful. They're people wondering about the major life changing decision just announced by world wide celebrities who've done their best to remain world wide celebrities. The decision is at odds with their position to date and public statements about unpleasant experiences in the UK and the RF. It will carry financial consequences for the UK public. It's also being reported on world wide. I'm in Australia and it was rubbing as breaking news with live updates this morning. There is an interest in these two celebrities as there is with other celebrities across the world. I don't think it's unexpected.

NetZeroZealot · 20/08/2026 08:51

Perhaps they will finally take the advice of their PR team.

I would be suggesting they keep their heads down for a few years and do a lot of work for charity.

Megan could carry on with her jam-making but should not do anything to publicly promote it. Perhaps she could give a share of the profits to charity.

Yes, I agree with you. I do however wonder if this is the start of a split? Both H&M have been adamant M won’t live here again, yet another flip (or flop?!).
they’re failing in the USA, they’ll try to gain some points off of W&K, use the royal funds to pay for the kids schooling, and I suspect Megs will try to schmooze back into some sort of royal image off the back of Kate and try to grift off of everyone’s can. Harry has A LOT of apologising to do with family and his friend. I do believe their marriage is circling the drain

They will pay for security. Elton John’s kids go to a posh school (Marlborough College) you think they don’t have security?
