I thought living in the uk made MM suicidal and that the family were racist and they wanted their freedom? Things must be pretty desperate if they have to come back to all the awfulness they needed to escape from.
I feel very sorry for Catherine & William. I think H wants to get back in before William becomes king as he knows he’d have no chance of any perks when that happens

Baital · 20/08/2026 08:37

That's quite a jump from the ?$16 million? They paid in 2020. Could the value have gone up that much?

But i agree they probably can't afford the running costs and need to downsize, given how much H has wasted in court cases combined with their lack of earning power.

The house is worth nothing. It’s a tear down. But I do think the land will be worth a lot of money. Probably more than what they paid.

The idea that they are keeping the house in California while also having a house in UK and Portugal is laughable. They are clearly in financial trouble and I do belive it will be up for sale soon

Which is crazy…when you think Megs whole business is based around that house. The kids while lives are based around that house- they never leave. So to rip their kids away from that. None of this is adding up.

JSMill · 20/08/2026 08:55

I’m wondering what school had spaces for two dcs at the last minute. Or have H and M been planning this for months?

muggart · 20/08/2026 08:56

NetZeroZealot · 20/08/2026 08:51

Perhaps they will finally take the advice of their PR team.

I would be suggesting they keep their heads down for a few years and do a lot of work for charity.

Megan could carry on with her jam-making but should not do anything to publicly promote it. Perhaps she could give a share of the profits to charity.

I mean, they will need an income..

Msbond667 · 20/08/2026 08:56

Good luck to them. There have been rumblings of this happening for a while. It Will certainly take the spotlight off kate and willy for a while. I wonder how kates mum feels ? (aka Mrs bennet) . Wouldn't surprise me if they were going to live at althorpe. Surprising its happening at all given Harry concerns around security. Personally I think Charles is far more ill than we think. Or charles has offered to pay the court charges if he comes back to UK.

AtIusvue · 20/08/2026 08:59

It’s such a rash decision. To say they enjoyed visiting uncles etc….so on the basis of a weeks holiday….they are pulling their kids out of school and moving all the way across the world???????….again.

This is seriously alarming behaviour.

Their mental health issues are clearly going to start affecting the kids when they are doing really rash things like this. It’s completely unstable behaviour. They aren’t putting their children first. It’s so unsettling to move them now. Yes, visit family more! US kids get 3 months of summer holidays for Christs sake. They could spend every summer in the UK. To rip them out of school and their family home….theres more behind this.

They’ve obviously done it before with the freedom flight- but they are not right in the head to be doing this to their kids.

I honestly think Meg n Harry are splitting. This is phase one. The house will be sold. The kids will settle here and Meg will return to the US.

And you don't think anything has been edited to get the programmes/papers/media’s the publicity and money from gullible public? Loool, thanks for proving my point. Unless of course you know these people personally and have literally heard it from their own mouths 🐑

Many of us have read, listened to and watched what Meghan has told us at length and directly from her own mouth in her engagement interview, her Vanity Fair interview, Oprah, a six part Netflix documentary, the many hours of Archetypes podcasts, speeches at the awards she has picked up, the magazine interviews she has done in The Cut and Variety, the interview with Tom Bradby, the Ellen DeGeneres show, Bloomberg, her panel appearances at various events and on podcasts (eg with Jamie Kerm Lima and Emma Grede) to promote herself, Archewell and most recently, As Ever. Plus what’s been disclosed in her court case and said in evidence in that proceeding. There there has been everything she has said in the two series and Christmas special of “With Love, Meghan” and several more hours of “Confessions of a Female Founder” plus guest podcasts to add to the list. Plus her instagram content since January 2025.

And then there’s all the things Harry has told us from his own mouth in Spare, The Me You Can’t See, his Dax Shephard podcast, and his tv interviews to promote Spare, and all his court cases - including two appearances as a witness under cross-examination and all his other content - most recently his BBC interview.

That’s quite a lot to be going on even before we get to any edited media articles…

Well of course theres manipulation and editing.
But you can’t argue with a face to face Oprah interview, a book that he wrote and actually leaving the country can you?

Also disingenuous that they both openly slated royal life and the uk press but wanted titles for the kids and named their daughter the Queens personal nickname, thereby ensuring attention through a royal connection.

Happyjoe · 20/08/2026 09:04

Raindropskeepfallingon · 19/08/2026 22:46

I hope the press take the best revenge possible and report absolutely nothing about them whatsoever. I don’t think they actually like being completely out of the limelight.

Probably a forlorn hope.

I hope they report nothing too. But contrary to belief here, I think what he and the others did was brave. I don't agree with phone hacking and other methods and the press have got away with it for far too long.

Edited

Kate’s mum may have wanted her children to marry well, but she almost never puts a foot wrong. They kept a dignified silence while they were slagged off & called social climbers. They turn up at events, they dress appropriately, are charming but don’t hog the limelight. I dont know how anyone can have an issue with them at this stage.

ADogRocketShip · 20/08/2026 09:04

It seems pretty reasonable to me. But then I don't really care about HAM drama and couldn't really give two figs about William, Kate and all that. They're just a bunch of people in a disfunctional family - the same as millions of families around the world but with more money. In my eyes they're just celebs - no different from the Beckhams or Brad Pitt with their family public dramas.

  • They don't want kids schooled in US - yep, I can appreciate that. I wouldn't either.
  • His father has cancer, and is pretty old anyway and hasn't got much longer - regardless of past relations, a lot of people tend to move back at this point and try to mend fences to some extent before their opportunity is lost.
  • US politics being as they are, a lot of families have moved back to the UK (even those who really quite enjoyed the lifestyle)
  • Their US work hasn't taken off as they wanted. They know his name alone will get them work in the UK in some capacity - financially it makes sense.

NetZeroZealot · 20/08/2026 08:53

They will pay for security. Elton John’s kids go to a posh school (Marlborough College) you think they don’t have security?

You mean the parents pay for security or the school? I have no idea. I wouldn't have thought a school would like that as it's quite disruptive.

RedToothBrush · 20/08/2026 09:05

PlumCat23 · 20/08/2026 08:39

What educational considerations? They had wonderful schools in California..
Besides this is mumsnet & don't you know "a bright child will do well anywhere"!

Harry wasn't bright and didn't do well at his really posh best that money can buy school. With additional tutoring.

Imagine his GCSE results if he'd have gone to a mediocre school.

Maybe it's not money and a failing PR machine at all (yeah right). What if it's Archie having problems at school?

I think one of the reasons they are going to generate so many headlines now is the hypocrisy and the slagging off of the UK before moving back. This can't be blamed on twisting in the British media because some of it was said in court. I think there's a sizeable number of people who might be otherwise indifferent to the pair. The 'I could never safely live in the uk' drama followed by this movement will lead to groans and mild annoyance.

They are not going to get an easy ride in the media because of it.

The King clearly wasn't blind sided btw. The way this has been reported in the press for a few days before it was announced means the King was made well aware some time ago. That's secret service fodder that one and they will have kept tabs to protect the King. Charles was possibly pissed off they hadn't bothered to tell him sooner personally, but of course he can't say that publicly because that's bad form and might destroy the fragile relationship he has got.

The Earl Spencer angle is an interesting one... No grudge in common there...

2026letsgo · 20/08/2026 09:07

@Serenster ok you put it better!

Gosh it all so self absorbed and pointless isn’t it. The very opposite of what an evolved royal should be.

AtIusvue · 20/08/2026 09:08

Also the ONE close family member that the children have any sort of relationship with…..is Doria!

Now they are removing their kids from the one family member that’s actually been in their lives….to be closer to a great uncle that they’ve met once?

It’s clear Doria won’t be moving. So why on earth would they do that to their kids!

None of this is making sense. it must be the visa/ them splitting/ money issues.

No-one will accept they are moving to be closer to a family that they aren’t close to….leaving behind their grandmother who is actually involved in their children’s lives.

Problem is unlike other outlets ANL have been decreed not to have indulged in phone hacking or other illegal means of gathering information.

In many peoples' eyes the ANL case has been perceived as an attempt to screw money out if the DM, rather than anything brave.

Apologies for the shoddy OP - the news flashed up and I blurted it out in such a hurry! Don't know where to start this morning ..... it's the drama, Mick, I love it!

Must get a life

Please, tell us why you were gutted.

Because it felt like they'd been hounded out. The levels of hatred by the press can only lead me to conclude racism. Look at the avocado situation during pregnancy.

I like Harry a lot. He's brave and a worthy prince..remember he's actually fought. I like both of their charity work as well. However, I do think that this is the wrong time for them both to come back - it's too soon really. They were only just beginning to build bridges.

It's a very divided country as well. If I were them, I'd have to gone to Africa because they love it there and I'd imagine the education would be just as good in S Africa as here. But, this is Harry's country. His family and friends are here. That's a huge draw enough for anybody.

This all sounds like I'm cooing over them when I'm actually an anti-monarchist and I can also see how H&M grate on people! I'd do away with the lot of them. I think it is positive they've returned though.

The parents would usually pay.

And some schools like it because they get rich and famous parents in.

My child was at school with a Russian oligarch’s son who had security. My friend’s child was at school with a famous Hollywood star’s child and they had security, it’s the other parents who usually don’t like it.

I see no evidence that they love Africa - a claim that makes no sense anyway given how huge Africa is, how many different countries, cultures, climates etc.

MyVividGreyOP · 20/08/2026 09:15

Stay in the USA please.

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 20/08/2026 09:16

There is a fair amount of evidence to suggest this is financially driven:

H is about to get a hefty legal bill after his failed court case.
M’s business is dwindling fast.
Their popularity and credibility in the US (and therefore money making opportunities) has dropped off a cliff.
The big deals with Netflix and Spotify ended.
H knows his brother will most likely give him nothing once he becomes king.
H has failed to make the UK government agree to his security demands.
The pair of them were vastly mistaken in their initial assumption they would have IPP status and security costs are high.
They live a billionaire lifestyle which does not match their income.

Any other comments they might make are a smoke screen in my opinion.

As regards the viability of the marriage, well if H had the ability for critical thinking and if he is unhappy in his marriage then a move to the UK would be a good plan in case divorce is a possibility.

To be honest though I don’t think he does have that ability and I also think he is so psychologically dependent on M that he would never willingly leave her.

On the other hand M is wily enough to consider the disadvantage of divorcing in the UK so this leads me to conclude there is no split on the horizon.

ContractorQuestion · 20/08/2026 09:19

I think this move will have a lot to do with Harry and his place in the family. He didn’t want to be a working royal but they are still his actual family and he’s been very much cut off from it for the years since they left - his own doing.
Charles does still have cancer, and although he seems to live well with it, he won’t be around forever.
Harry will want to build a bridge back into the family folds while Charles is still here because once he’s gone, or now/any time, I’d imagine William won’t have much enthusiasm for taking his brother back.

Stifledlife · 20/08/2026 09:21

I think they just want to gather fuel for the next tell all TV show.
They've done everything so far to death and no one is interested anymore.
