Fantastic post by @ShamedBySiri re HAM’s lack of interests outside of their own narrow existence.
I’m horse mad like you, Siri, and I follow people who rescue from the kill pens and rehabilitate after even worse cases of cruelty. There are unbeliable abuses in équine sports, especially in the US. Have you ever seen the Texas Walking Horses and learned about the barbaric practice of « soring » ? The point is there is so much Harry could do for animal welfare…. Princess Anne has been a very long standing and valued patron of ILPH, now rechristened World Horse Welfare, an organisation I once worked for. But when you see how Harry views his mount as essentially sports véhicles, one shouldn’t be too surprised. It’s so sad!!!

Thanks - no I haven't heard of "soring" - I must investigate. There are some awful heavy horse cruelty cases, after long working lives for the Amish - it really shocks me that they treat their draft horses so harshly, I suppose I expected better from a close knit, peaceful farming community. Dressage and show jumping also involve a lot of cruelty. I follow Idaho Horseshoeing School, and he gets lots of shocking neglect cases, horses just left to their own devices in a field or maybe a barn, with no regular care and their hooves grow to a shocking state curled up and around with the whole leg anatomy affected. He does some amazing rehabilitative work. But yes, Harry doesn't appear overly interested in horses despite his family background.

I don't think so - I think graduates get a higher starting salary but I think it is fairly equal at the start. Having looked online it seems that once you graduate from Sandhurst Officer Training College the early progression is fairly automatic through the junior officer ranks - but it seems that Harry was on the slow track

Promotion to first Lieutenant around 1 year and up to 2 - dependent on completion of courses and disciplinary record. Officers need to show they are capable of leading a troop/platoon of 30 soldiers (although it's not clear that Harry ever had leadership responsibility).

Promotion to Captain is usually after around 2-3 years depending on successful completion of Junior Officer Training courses showing the ability to command a company of 120 and significant planning and decision-making ability, with responsibility for operations on the ground as well as equipment maintenance, logistic support, and management of people.

Where it gets tough is promotion to Major which would have been Harry's next step up. Promotion to Major highly competitive and merit-based selection board, and requires passing courses, excellent on-the-job performance, annual reports, and staff assessments. It perhaps became clear to Harry in 2015 that he wasn't going to be promoted any time soon and he quit - although the Queen quietly promoted Harry to (honorary??) major when he married Meghan.

I was musing on the parallels between Harry and James Hewitt.
Now let me start by stating that I absolutely DO NOT believe Harry is Hewitt's son - it is widely accepted that he and Diana did not meet until some time after Harry's birth for a start, plus other reasons.
But look at their life trajectories:

Hewitt - sold out his stories re: Diana, branded a cad by his army mates, blackballed from army clubs and organisations which presumably meant he lost many/most of his friends and his social life took a dive.
Tried various business ventures with the money he made, but they all failed (not sure if he was ever bankrupted).
Went home to live with Mummy, where he currently shares a small two bedroom abode (according to google) and works as a gardener.

Harry - sold out stories re: his family, and dines out on the Diana memory. Has lost most of his friends and social life.
Tried various business ventures (with Meghan as well) presumably utilising money made, they have all failed.
Trying to go home to live with Daddy.

Military careers:

Harry couldn't make it beyond Captain.
Hewitt achieved promotion to Captain after six years. Served as Challenger tank squadron commander in Gulf War. Mentioned in despatches.
Failed exam for promotion to Major three times.

Hewitt used to drink in the village pub where I lived in Devon back in the day. The locals didn't really talk to him and he would cut a lonely figure propping up the bar on his own. The future beckons Harry - he'll be in a pub near one of us sometime soon...

Well after being bored I found more of the dribbles on Reddit. If this doesn't constitute a leak of the Treaty of Versailles part 2 then I don't know what would.

Also contains some fine HAM manifesting about what W&C are thinking etc etc.

Trigger warming: may be intensely annoying.

Exactly what I meant childish say no more.

His name is Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

Do try and keep up. Especially when you are lecturing other people.

They really are trying to manifest a reunion with W&C aren’t they, using “Princess Kate” 🙄 as the peacemaker, what a load of Sussex drivel.

^^ Missed the edit window - the above applies mainly to going commercial (since it's been mentioned, such would almost certainly be needed to fly a helicopter for water bombing),.but even just picking up a FAA basic recreational licence would involve H jumping through similar hoops..it's something people do but it involves effort.

Edited

It’s a biggish process. In the US they advise converting in your own country first, then applying to convert to US.

There are exams plus flying tests, and a health check which includes mental and psychological evaluations. The drug and alcohol screening is mouth swabs and breathalyser, afaik. So mostly won’t pick up on long term use, only current use.

He may not have hit enough of the qualifying criteria for those to be enough. He had to have enough flying hours in a number of categories which tbh I didn’t really understand. But he might find he had so much to do that it wasn’t worth it.

Don't you mean Prince Archieson and Princess Lilibet? You don't know them, so best to be formal.

It’s Prince Archie Harrison.

bluegreygreen · 22/07/2026 19:41

Looks like a leak to me @NormalAuntFanny - and in one of the Sussexes' favourite publications too.

How surprising!

bluegreygreen · 22/07/2026 19:46

What I would like to know is: is it both of them, or just one?

notimagain · 22/07/2026 20:11

TBH I'm a bit wary of judging H's military career against anybody else's without seeing how he fared compared with his similarly qualified cohort - now if anyone fancies wading through the (?) London Gazette .....

Unless someone comes up with him having committed a major foul I suspect despite the rumours it's possible he was like quite a few junior officers, good/very good at his specialist role but perhaps lacking the aptitude, drive or interest needed to progress to senior rank.

Now IMHO theres nothing wrong with that but you need to have an escape plan that you can execute in your early thirties if staying in the forces isn't an option.

That's where H fell down - A lot of people take the skills they"ve picked up and basically transfer them to another job, another employer...

H simply stepped over the side without a plan thinking he would be bound to be allowed to make a living as a "Royal"....

@Morelovelyandtemperate - I can indeed imagine the atmosphere when KC and HAM met!

I reckon it would have been icily polite, in that way that the British upper classes do so well. So the way they say words without saying much (there's a great book called People Like Us which examines this! https://www.amazon.co.uk/People-Like-Us-Season-Classes/dp/0349108528)

And quite a bit of time would have been taken up with "would you like tea? Lovely, so nice at this time of day" and "would the children like a biscuit?" and all of the faffing around pouring of tea, drinking tea and generally getting comfortable. I bet that took ages.

And they'd have either poured it themselves (unlikely) in which case that would have taken a while x 4 cups of tea for the adults and then drinks for the children OR a flunkey would have poured it, in which case no conversation would have carried on while that was being done. So there's a good 15-20 minutes gone of a one hour visit, just messing about with tea cups.

I have no inside knowledge, that's just "I reckon"

Edited

Hilarous ! Twenty mins faffing around with cups !

I don't think an 'Apache instructor' is less believable than a member of the public, which is what your post implies.

I think it's quite possible that Harry was a good pilot in the Army, but didn't have the interest or application to continue flying once he left.

He doesn't seem to have much interest or application in anything. Apart from suing the press.

I don't know how he survived in the army. He has no application skills, interest or respect for authority

He's a man of many monikers.

'Harold' (from 'Spare'), 'Dragon slayer', 'Duke of Sussex', 'Prince of England'

What he no longer seems to want is for anyone to 'Just call me Harry'.

I do hope the MIGS inform KC of these leaks to their favourite publications, I’m sure he is kept abreast of the British mainstream media articles but not sure if US magazine would be on their radar though maybe I’m not giving them enough credit.

I'm aware this is probably a dumb question but here goes. What is the point of these leaks? Especially to US Weekly and People?
