I hope the rest of the book is more accurate than the cover, given that Edward VIII could in no way be considered the spare.

The 'spare' was George VI.

True, but it's still a banging cover, and he did kind of become the spare when he abdicated.

He wanted to go back to being the Prince of Wales and still do selected duties! CF.

We're probably going off at a tangent but given these continuing suspicions about H it's maybe important to realise that during a lot of flying training, especially military, especially at basic level, there is a lot of solo flying (probably close to 50% during the later stage of some courses, if not more).

What that means is as a student progresses through a course there's less and less opportunity for an instructor to assist.....but nevertheless those solo flights may/will be monitored to some degree, and the student would expect to demonstrate they'd improved their skills on those solo flights during the routine dual check rides that pop up through courses...

Fundamentally flying training is nothing like learning to drive where you get lots and lots of dual instruction, and it's dual instruction only, and then suddenly you go through a single check drive...pass that and your "through".

Now I think what's happened to H's state of mind in the last 7 years is another matter, and there are all sorts of theories about his behaviour these days but what I would say, all IMO, as an ex flying instructor and examiner, is that during his flying career he simply can't have been consistently "demonstrating seriously poor judgement/ lack of basic common sense" that's a good way of failing course(s) or even ending up dead.

I thought he wasn't a pilot but the gunner/aimer/whatever anyway?

That's what I thought, he was never a helicopter pilot, he was gunner crew.

You are, of course, absolutely correct about the flying and the obvious need for actual skill and comprehension to be able to carry it out. What is odd, though, is that it would seem that he wasn’t able to progress up the ranks in the army above Captain, allegedly due to his inability to pass the exam which is required after the rank of Captain. Maybe he could only apply himself to things he was really passionate about 🤷‍♀️

There is a recent Shauna Kay / Vintage Read video on YouTube that was based on a passage from the Tom Bowers book.

I think it’s accepted even by these arch-critics that Harry was co-pilot/gunner so had to have pilot credentials for that period. The big ‘but’ is that he was an odd choice for a ‘living legend of aviation’ award alongside Sully and Buzz Aldrin, given that he’d been one of many co-pilot/gunners back in the day and had long stopped flying and probably hadn’t stayed licensed, and had no significant military achievement to speak of (apart from fantasising about murdering his father).

ETA: @notimagain talks about the processes upthread a little from his pilot’s perspective. Thank you!

Apologies for the delay @bluegreygreen . It’s for the whole thing. Someone popped round unannounced and I opened the door!!!!

BasiliskStare · 08/07/2026 12:52

Just to go back to @BreadInCaptivity 's post about H's intellect. I'm guilty of referring to H as g "dim" & probably other similar things as well. This may be unfair , but I suppose I am using it as a shorthand for - I think it's clear he's not academic and he does not seem to a have a facility for critical thinking. Nor any curiosity about nor willingness to understand views opposed to his own. His adherence to "his truth rather than factual truth". I think the Statement after the ANL case where he conflated the Mirror etc case with the ANL case - when they were so clearly two very different circumstances - but assumed the similarities made it winnable shows he really doesn't choose to understand an argument. And he seems very emotional and entitled which excacerbstes this. I'm not saying he has no qualities, or has not learned how to do some difficult things .

notimagain · 08/07/2026 12:54

Starryfifty · 08/07/2026 12:35

He was a gunner

My understanding of this, open to correction from someone who is more in the know:

The Apache was/is a two pilot aircraft with flight controls and flight instrumentation in both the forward and aft cockpit, so the aircraft can be flown from either seat.

In terms of task separation/job descriptions the front seater's primary job is gunner/weapons system operator, with aircraft handling being secondary to that.

The back seater's primary role is pilot/aircraft commander.

After Harry passed basic pilot training and was awarded his wings his first role post advanced training/ Apache conversion was the pilot "gunner" /weapons systems operators job....there's far more to that than just shooting a gun.

At some point he went back through the training system and qualified as aircraft commander/pilot.....

Any Apocalypse Now based thoughts that he just hung out of the side of a big helicopter shooting a gun are well wide of the mark for his first tour on the machine and well well wide of the mark for his second tour.

Personally I think a lot of criticism of his recent behaviour post his Army days is fair enough and I'd happily give him a kicking for that.

OTOH anyone still claiming he was just a gunner maybe needs to take a long hard look at where they are getting their information from.

bluegreygreen · 08/07/2026 13:01

Thanks @Recklessismymiddlename

Starryfifty · 08/07/2026 13:13

Plenty of very smart people are not academic. Harry seems to display complete ignorance at every turn. His knowledge of Geopolitical matters is obvious. He has proven this when he tries to present himself as a global statesman. A smart person would educate themselves about such issues or if reluctant to do so, stay quiet.

His podcast idea. Interviewing Putin? Who famously does not give interviews and if he does, refuses to speak English. If my 15 year old suggested such an idea, I'd be seriously worried about him.

Zero knowledge about basic law, which is quite astonishing considering he spends his time suing left right and centre.

The above is only some examples. These are not actions of an intellectually sound individual

shockthemonkey · 08/07/2026 13:16

Oh sorry, I meant nothing by it, @RecoIIectionsMayVary - I was just musing 👍🏼

AnAutumnCrow · 08/07/2026 13:21

Just for the record, I’ve been crossing paths with @notimagain on MN for well over a year, since the tragic Air India 171 crash. He’s extremely knowledgeable as a pilot and flight instructor. Knows his stuff.

AnAutumnCrow · 08/07/2026 13:38

Harry IMO suffers from a lack of intellectual curiosity, a lack of knowledge, a surfeit of arrogance & entitlement, a lack of empathy and a propensity for substance addiction and cruelty. He trashed and insulted his family and his nation, for money. He has buddied up with very dubious people.

He possesses a modicum of charm when needed. He has had a decent education, Apache aircraft training, and military experience. He also has a degree of physical fitness, wealth and confidence, but these are diminishing by the day. He has his nuclear family.

The time has arrived when the latter is no longer enough to outweigh the former, and his reputation now swirls and disappears down the great global shitter.

bluegreygreen · 08/07/2026 13:47

I think it's sad, because he had huge privilege, and hence huge potential.

The position of 'spare', or rather the position of a wealthy member of the Royal Family without formal constitutional duty (as he was never actually higher than 3rd in line to the throne) can be anything you want to make it.

He could have said (at any point in his life) that he didn't want to be a senior member of the family, but be a private person, and have gone to live in Africa, or even stayed in the UK as a private landowner.

The trouble is, that was never what he actually wanted. He wanted the glamour of being in the Family and appearing at all the big events; he just didn't want to do the other stuff that came with it.

Has Harold been seen out and about today?

In which case this again begs the question of who wrote the insulting statement about the judge, @BasiliskStare

However ill advised, there were some long words in it and it was correctly spelled and punctuated, so you do have to wonder Hmm

Thanks, notimagain; I once queried this exact thing myself and a very knowledgeable poster came on to explain ... and looking at this post I suspect it was you Smile

The total and complete absence of 'stalwarts' is... interesting.

I do find it fascinating to occasionally venture into the dwindling number of Sussex fandom hubs. Absolutely batshit stuff. Full of lurid conspiratorial thinking. 'They' are out to get Harry. The courts, the palace, the police, the media, everyone. Because the bloke who points to his crotch in his wife's twerking videos is such a severe threat to 'them'.

Completely nuts. But this is the level of Sussex fandom these days. Remember you could have reasonable discussions with their supporters? Even they have given up now, leaving only the cultists.

AtIusvue · 08/07/2026 14:13

Did we see this?

that Harry the Dragon Slayer….tried to make a deal with DM ….but they refused!!!!

So he was grifting all along!

I can’t seem to archive it and don’t have a share token. Any of you guys?

Will see if the story is running elsewhere

Prince Harry sought deal with Daily Mail before doomed court case

Representatives for the claimants tried to settle the dispute shortly before trial started, but Associated Newspapers rejected the informal offer out of hand

It’s possible, but I suspect not terribly likely?

But when the impartiality of the judges was questioned following the Brexit case the President of the Supteme Court, the Lord Chief Justice, the Bar Council and the Lord Chancellor all defended the institution. That was a highly political decision though - this one is not on that scale.

Thank you @Serenster
