Btw, I’ve an update on the new political landscape of Birmingham City Council (re the Invictus saga).
When the council supported the ridiculous unaffordable bid for it host the Invictus Games in 2027, it was under a solid Labour administration. The government that approved the £26m underwrite from the department of veteran affairs was Conservative.
Things have changed.
While there are still local Labour MPs around including Shabana Mahmood the Home Secretary, Birmingham City Council is no longer Labour. There were huge Labour losses in the ranks of the councillors.
Finally, Birmingham has been able to cobble together a coalition administration of Lib Dems, Greens, and a bloc of leftish independent councillors (the latter operating under the ‘Better Birmingham’ banner).
This inexperienced coalition wants to be seen to be re-establishing working local services, rescuing and balancing the city budget, and caring about social justice issues. Despite these attempts at financial stabilisation, the authority will remain under the oversight of government-appointed commissioners until at least 2028.
Invictus is going to be a headache, as predicted, given the way in which it will use up officer time and drain resources dealing with the dramatics of the Sussex PR machine and it will bring the IDF to their door.
Even now Emergency Planning Services will be running up a risk register around Invictus. Already it will be a huge distraction.
Here’s a summary of the political composition:
