I thought given it’s 16 or whatever hours of walking in 24 hours, the driving bit is when you’re supposed to sleep, or at least rest, not go bombing down the M6.

Yep. That’s why I found the comments so bizarre. Just any excuse to have a go.

It would be utterly reckless to drive and climb!

I’d like to do this, can someone signpost me? Where do I get 24hr support, all the equipment and training support I need please? Oh and transport to and from so my family can come? Oh and the time off work for all the training and to do it. Oh and sometime to look after DC as DH works shifts so it’s tricky.

Equipment: a pair of walking boots and a jacket in case it rains.
Training: none required (assuming you have a reasonable standard of fitness), other than learning to use a map and compass if you don't already know how to.
Support: a friend/relative with a car.

If you wanted to do this, you could - presumably your DH does not work 7 days a week so you can leave them with him for a day while you go and do it.

I'm not a fan of the royals, it was the title that caught my interest so have rft
there are so many ignorant posters on here who have no idea about much of anything, except to bitch and stick the boot in because they are so thick they don't know any better. Some of these idiots need to get a life and a hobby. Don't like the royal family? Why post just to bitch then? Says more about the writer really, petty, jealous or stupid maybe all three.
I doubt William, Kate or the rest of them give a flying duck of what Doris from Grimsby in her 5 bed house / 1 bedcouncil flat thinks of them.

You see, I think that's a problem. A monarch or future monarch should absolutely care what ordinary citizens think about the monarchy and the royal family. The contemptous snobbishness of using an old-fashioned name, social housing and a poor town in order to personify someone whose opinion can apparently be dismissed by those privileged by wealth and birth is really depressing.

As are all the misogynistic insults thrown towards people posters disagree with... bitchy... sour cunts.. etc. Really depressing.

sittingonabeach · 29/06/2026 14:17

It’s not the same training required for a marathon if you want do to a running club sort of time. But if your daily exercise is not much more than a half hour stroll to the shops on the flat, then you would be advised to up that (and include some hills!) and don’t wear your walking boots for the first time on the challenge

Orangemintcream · 29/06/2026 09:52

I don’t know if this has been mentioned as it’s a long thread but I’m curious as to how/where she trained for this ?

Did she have to mountain climb in secret for that too ? Keeping her identity hidden ?

Anyone with a decent standard of fitness (which she certainly has) can do the three peaks. There is no actual mountaineering/technical climbing involved - it's just walking up and down three reasonably large hills.

sittingonabeach · 29/06/2026 14:21

@SadiraOfTyr for about 13 hours and 11 hours driving (hence not a good idea to not have a designated driver or two who don’t do the walk)

Oh, yes - it would be miserable, and potentially dangerous driving yourself. Nice to have a sleep in the car (or more usually minibus) on the transfers too. And the driver sleeps while you are out on the hill.

Wow congrats Catherine! If you have energy for that, you have energy for working, right?

She was working. Promoting awareness of the impact of cancer treatment and the work of the Royal Marsden. Oh but wait, perhaps she would have done better to visit the hospital and have sick children paraded in front of her!

The sarcasm about 'parading sick children' is a deflection. The point remains that there is a clear discrepancy between the stamina required for the Three Peaks Challenge and the limited availability for public-facing official duties. If she is physically capable of the former, the public expectation for a return to a standard professional workload is objectively reasonable.

When a public figure like her demonstrates the physical capacity for a mountain climb, it contradicts the narrative that she remain too unwell to resume regular duties. It is to point out that work is measured by standard professional benchmarks, not by personal projects.

meercat23 · 29/06/2026 16:29

She has not said that she remains unwell, quite the reverse. What is the 'standard professional workload' for a member of the royal family who is also mother to three relatively young children.

Just because someone is able to walk up the mountains doesn't mean they're automatically capable of being at work 🤷

The logic holds, but it highlights the unique position of the royals. If a standard employee completed an equivalent physical challenge while on medical leave (which is not even her case her btw), their employer would naturally question their capacity to return to their role. Why should the public—who funds the institution—not be afforded the same level of inquiry regarding the status of a working Royal?

Noodledog · 29/06/2026 16:36

I'm finding the nastiness about what a cancer sufferer should/ shouldn't be able to do very unpleasant, and pretty disturbing really. So you don't like the royal family- fine, a lot of us don't. You have a personal dislike for Catherine- fine, I guess, though a little odd given how anodyne and generally pleasant she seems.

The comments about her cancer are just weird and fucked up. I can only assume the people making them have never suffered from cancer themselves and have never been close to anyone who has. If they have, then that's even worse, frankly.

Being a member of the royal family will certainly mean you have access to private treatment and the best medical staff- but it won't prevent the physical toll on your body and it definitely won't prevent the psychological toll on a mother of young children who has had to face the idea of dying while her children are still very emotionally reliant on her. Given William's experience of his mother dying when he was young, I'm sure the idea of his children suffering the same experience was traumatic for him too. It's not unusual for people in recovery from cancer to take on physical challenges to raise money for cancer charities as part of their recovery. And people should not be guilt tripped into going back to full time work before they are ready. Many people with cancer take extended time off- some people never return to work.

If you quit your hill walking job and then went hillwalking... maybe....

But their job is to be very pleasant at all times to the public whilst being scrutinised. Which is quite draining I of itself.

CurlewKate · 29/06/2026 16:40

It would have been fun if George had gone with her. And, incidentally, excellent PR.

Because her private medical issues are absolutely nothing to do with us.

She chooses to have 3 children. What employer would give me less work just because I have 3 children. It is irrelevant. Royals should perform and be seen to perform their duties however dull, not pick and choose their 'fun' causes as if they were celebrities who earned their own money.

The late Queen and King Charles understand the duty and the social contract between royalty and their subjects.

She doesn’t have a job. I know that makes some people really angry, but really we have zero right to have any expectations of her at all right now.

It’s all obviously down to jealousy. She’s beautiful, never puts a foot wrong, graceful, obviously a good mother and supportive wife, plus rich with nice parents and mostly nice in-laws.

Recklessismymiddlename · 29/06/2026 16:52

The late queen and KC were and are HoS. Kate will never be HoS. That will never be her role. So completely different.

Its William that's the heir and you should be asking if him, not his wife.

The role of the wife to the heir isn’t a ‘job’. It’s a position.

The term working royal refers to members of the monarch’s family who are designated official representatives of the Crown.

They don’t get paid a wage in the same way a regular job is remunerated.

The heir and his family are funded by the Duchy of Cornwall.

The other working royals - are funded by the Duchy of Lancaster via the King. He decides how much they get paid.

Travel expenses for official duties are paid via the Sovereign Grant.

How many engagements or what type of engagements are done by any particular Royal are ultimately the decision of the monarch - as they are his ‘team’ to deploy.

He is also taking instruction from the government of the day on which specific constitutional and foreign policy commitments they expect from the head of state.
