I think there might be two things happening - one is the review, which isn’t done yet, and then in the light of that Harry (who thinks that the existing bespoke assessment is not sufficient) asked for an enhanced ‘security package’ and was told no. Presumably because the bespoke assessment for this trip had been done and it was deemed unnecessary.

Althorp is not a Royal residence and never has been. It is an ancestral home.

Sorry @Passingthrough123 I didn't put that very well - let me try again. While Althorp isn't royal, it's thought of by many people - and probably by lots of Americans - as royal or royal adjacent, simply because of the look of the place and of course the Diana association. So staying there will shore up the Sussex royal credentials more than the unknown addresses of the Spencer sisters would, in the same way that St James's Palace may be an older royal residence than others, but doesn't have the name recognition of Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.

Thought immediately of this

Where's the laugh emoji when you need it? If not a welcome home banner, perhaps some bunting?

News from Hugh Grant and Hacked Off and their fight to curb press freedom. I’ve managed to archive this one, hurrah.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/06/28/hacked-off-hugh-grant-andy-burnham-curb-free-speech/

https://archive.ph/jQju1

‘Hacked off Hugh Grant pushes Andy Burnham to curb free speech

‘Labour considers new war on journalism and social media’

It’s all going on.

Thanks again.

I'm very much hoping Judge Nicklin uses his judgement to deal directly with the issue of the importance of a free press.

I don’t think he is quite on the same level as his cousins. They have only ever been grandchildren of a monarch whereas H is now the son of a monarch. But he isn’t the direct heir like his brother is. Or far enough up the LoS to have a realistic prospect of being the monarch.

So he is a notch above his cousins importance wise but wants to be on a par with William which is preposterous even before you consider he left the working royals and indicated a strong desire for privacy.

Can I point out that KC’s siblings didn’t receive full time security despite their mother being Monarch ?
Why is Harry different ?

Absolutely. Anne and Edward only get security when doing public duties.

Oh she would, remember her Paris trip when she posted her feet up in the back seat whilst beeping driven through Paris at night? she is utterly shameless.

That's awful. I'm sure that went down badly with the Spencers.

Oh yes, I absolutely agree with what you're saying. I meant it's not a Royal residence in terms of armed police security. So if Harry's been thinking that staying there would count as a royal residence – precisely because of the points you make – then RAVEC has clearly burst his bubble by telling him no.

And they were and still are working royals (Anne and Edward at least). So why a non working royal should have better provision than them, when the risk is assessed and appropriate security provided for each visit - at our expense - I do not know.

Jane and Sarah (nee Spencer) live in Norfolk and South Lincolnshire respectively.
Sarah is involved with the Belvoir hunt and lives fairly near the castle.
Interestingly they both live within a hour of Sandringham which of course is the estate they grew up on.
I wouldn’t have thought either of them consider Althorp ‘home’.
They have had -and continue to I expect - a difficult time of fence sitting.
Im sure they were as horrified as we were/are with Harry’s continuing disruptive behaviour but are reluctant to cut him loose as he would then have no one.
Im going to say this but warn people it’s about suicide so if you don’t want to read , scroll now.
I never believed Meghans suicidal claims. Never for a moment.
However, I have thought that if anybody in that relationship was ever at risk from suicide it would be Harry.
My reasoning? Men are much more likely (biggest killer of men aged 18-50), Harry has massive unresolved issues from his mother dying, if Meghan left him I think he would fall apart, long term continued drug use by a man with mental health issues and not the sharpest knife in the block, and as l have said before he is pretty stupid but I’m sure even he now sees and regrets all he has thrown away - esp his relationship with his brother. He is consumed by jealousy, envy, bitterness and rage against everyone in his family who loved him - this must make someone massivly unstable . He has painted himself into a corner with Meghan and the kids -if she leaves him/divorces him he only has himself. What a prospect.
I think the Spencer siblings must also have had these concerns too which is why they continue to have a relationship with him and I expect that’s how they ‘sell it’ to William.
I suspect they have a lot of Déjà vu when they look at Harry’s mental instability.
Blood will out as my grandma used to say.

Yes, that's what I think happened, @noonames.

@Puzzledandpissedoff, what I meant was that the only information we are receiving about any RAVEC timing is coming from 'a source close to the Sussexes' - i.e. what the Sussexes want to tell us.
RAVEC won't tell us for security reasons, the Palace have not commented, other than to say they can't interfere in security matters, the official government line is also 'no comment'.

It may be that the decision has only just been declared. It may also be that they have known for ages, and thought the multiple media stories would cause enough pressure to change someone's mind.

I think, like @noonames, that Harry had his usual bespoke assessment, didn't like it and asked for a security package' for the trip, which was denied.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/06/2026 12:44

Hopefully any room where they meet will be set up to record audio, at least, for when they twist it to their favourite scribblers

Regardless of who comes, if they can arrange to bug Edward VIII they can do the same with Harry, @JudgeJ - and probably will

What the fool seems to forget is that they'll already have plenty of information on him, and certainly on Meghan, including things which the rest of us probably haven't even thought of, though whether any of it will ever trickle out is another question entirely

PullTheBricksDown · 28/06/2026 12:45

@DaisyDooley fair point about the mental health risk to Harry. As many people said at the time they moved to California, that's when he painted himself into that corner because Meghan is never going to agree to the kids being resident anywhere else and IIRC California law will support her on that. He's now stuck there for life unless he accepts living away from his kids as the norm.

According to Tom Bower , Charles Spencer tried to talk Harry out of marrying Meghan . I am not sure he will welcome her with open arms.

Yes I'm very much on your page, @bluegreygreen - my fault if I put it clumsily - and we're back again with the difference between silly claims and whatever's really happened

Of course security matters aren't bandied around, but such is his delusion that it won't stop Harry feeling people should be told this and that if it happens to suit.
He really is an utter fool, and if he chooses to show this so clearly he can hardly complain when people notice

ShamedBySiri · 28/06/2026 12:59

Can't remember who mentioned upthread, that Harry's public security battles have adversely impacted privacy and security for other members of the Royal family such as Edward and Anne, who do not have security except when working, which may not have been previously widely known until Harry came along with his complaints. He really causes a massive headache for them all, and also the Spencers, with all his complaints and leaks about his itinerary.
Add into the mix Meghan can't be trusted not to take photos or to publicise them. She's so sneaky, even if she didn't post them on Instagram, she'd have them up on her noticeboard in the kitchen which would accidentally reveal them in another instagram post and she'd put on her innocent face "I forgot, whoops".

I have nothing but pity and sympathy for them all. I'm sure some people, whether MIGs, security advisors or maybe someone like Charles Spencer must have pointed out a few of these things to him in no uncertain terms but they take no notice of anyone.

How we all laughed at the "trusty sword of truth".

I miss the days of politicians and the like providing such entertainment, not to mention the judiciary. "Has she elegance? Has she fragrance?" re Lady Archer in Jeffrey Archer's libel trial comes to mind.

Oh god yeah, trusty sword and the “fragrant” lady Archer, who was a respected scientist ffs!

I doubt Professor Cat Jarman Spencer will be suffering fools gladly either. She seems committed to the historic estate, I’ll give her that. She’s got a keen intellect. I daresay as a Norwegian she also knows a thing or two about troubled royals.

That's a really good point – Harry's bleating about his security has opened up his relatives to potential harm.

NotTalkinBoutTheLinen · 28/06/2026 13:07

@DaisyDooley You are not off base about any of it. But it is possible that the main pressure on him comes from Meghan. That he’d drop it all if she said to do so. She’s the driven one and seems more likely to be the decision maker and the one pushing him to get her what she wants.

The unfortunate problem in this is the fact that Harry can’t actually get her the things she wants 🤷‍♀️

I just wonder if H simply doesn't have enough to do. Once leaving the WRF he was effectively semi retired in his late 30s. I remember DH listening to a podcast by Warren Buffet (we're a couple of decades older than H&M) who said there are two ways of preparing for retirement. 1) (Obvs) try to make sure you have enough money in place to pay for the life you need 2) Put things in place to keep you occupied and give some structure to your life.

I am not sure ( I'm speculating) H has never has the wherewithal or the intellectual resources to give himself a structure , rather than that imposed on him when he was a member of the WRF , or the early days of the freedom flight when there was filming etc to do. I don't get the impression he threw himself into his charities ( I come back to African Parks - he's a director - have we heard anything from him) . And I think had he built himself a decent life , actively supporting charities he was interested in , rather than turning up as the patron for a quick speech - ok that might be a slight exaggerating , but I'm not sure how much ) , he may have had less time to dwell on perceived grievances and slights , eg the British Press , RAVEC etc.

BasiliskStare · 28/06/2026 13:22

I'm too late to edit but just in addition to my post above , Warren Buffet also referred to things which give some self worth as well as structure , rather than the job title etc which you enjoyed before. Anyway - not sure if I have explained that very well. I know what I mean 😂

NotTalkinBoutTheLinen · 28/06/2026 13:25

Exactly, the only person he has now and he can’t possibly get her the things she wants.

And a drastic life change like this would send anyone reeling.

Very well explained. The things that give most of us structure are absent from his life. He also doesn’t have any long term attachments left beyond Meghan. Thank heavens for the children.
