I’m with Kate on this. I’m not a big royalist but it must be horrible to hear your young kids getting booed.

imo if I was Kate I'd spin this the other way into a positive and actually a strength

I'd say how lucky we are to live in a democracy where booing the King is allowed (even on his birthday - yes I know it isn't really) and that not everyone agrees that we should have a King and that is ok - they are allowed to think that.
Monarchs in UK rule with the consent of the people and majority of people consent and allowing those that don't to boo is why our system is (paradoxically) as strong as it is.
I would tell them It's a positive of the free country we are so lucky to live in.
In some countries people can be imprisoned or worse for booing but we do not do that here.

No need to fear the booers - wave and smile at them like you would everyone else!!

SanSeb · 15/06/2026 14:11

I’d say the kids should not be paraded in public. You can’t belong to a royal family in a democracy and expect total allegiance- protest is a right. I would not put my kids in public view, I don’t think it’s great parenting.

People have no other way of expressing that they don’t support a monarchy. Perhaps we should have a referendum? It’s 2026, do we need such an archaic institution when UK citizens are struggling financially?

We still need a head of state and, believe it or not, ours is quite value for money - despite everything we read. Having an elected head of state, with all the administrative apparatus and elections that need holding every few years, is an incredibly expensive deal. Elections in their own right cost tens of millions. I am not pro-monarchy particularly and yet our model does work and at relatively low cost

HoppityBun · 15/06/2026 14:25

Let them eat cake.

DisforDarkChocolate · 15/06/2026 13:49

Yeah, because when Harry did that, he had all the love and support his family could offer, didn't he?

Yes and he threw it back in their faces!

heartsinvisiblefury · 15/06/2026 14:40

They need to accept both good and bad aspects of their great privilege.

boathouserocks · 15/06/2026 14:52

Agree that life is tough out there when publicly the mega rich are jetting about in their private planes, expensive vehicles, of which they have a choice to use and change as frequently as their super expensive designer outfits.
However, I bet that a lot of royalty protesters whose main gripe is that they have money while they do not are also super into celebrities, and that they don't protest how much wealth the celebrities that they idolise are splashing around.
I feel that the modern members of the royal family and I'm talking William and Kate, have always been mindful of not being showy, not buying new gowns for every occasion, living life as normally as is possible in such a highly public position. I haven't seen any public splashing of the cash from them.
Those who are protesting are protesting simply because they can, and because they enjoy bashing the RF.
They likely brought their children with them because it's good training for the future for them.
Also because they are a family and they do as much together as they can.
At least they are not hiding them away, turning their children's backs to the camera and not allowing anyone to see their faces.
Haters are always going to be haters, sadly it's the way it goes.

Tonissister · 15/06/2026 15:07

I don't approve of the Royal Family's continued existence, especially at our expense, but Jesus, Mary and the wee donkey, the woman is allowed to have a face. And all the normal daily expressions that pass across it.

Lifestooshort71 · 15/06/2026 15:44

My initial reaction was that booing the children was not on. My second reaction was that Catherine would have been mightily annoyed (on the children's behalf) and, when the day was over, could have let rip at William and Charles to sort out the Andrew mess, be transparent over HMRC, evict E&B from their apartments, etc, etc. The Mother Hen will have spoken. Well, I hope so.

FormerFatty · 15/06/2026 15:47

I enjoyed her looking mildly peeved. Better than her usual rictus grin.

I’d like to see more booing at these silly events.

Indigovelvet · 15/06/2026 16:11

HIghlighted a reality and the kids did look a bit vulnerable sat in the open carriage. Maybe would be best that they didn't come along.

perlana · 15/06/2026 16:27

Big difference is celebrities don't get a taxpayer funded Sovereign Grant, and other tax exemptions and wills that they can keep secret and so on.

Wenttoaweddingonamonday · 15/06/2026 16:30

Don’t wheel your kids out at every opportunity and they won’t be booed. And if that’s “glaring” then fucking hell 😂😂

wordler · 15/06/2026 16:35

Here's the actual footage with sound - it's within the article, I can't find the video on its own.

It's wildly exaggerated to call it "if looks could kill" "glaring" etc, someone they interviewed in the crown said they thought Charlotte looked almost in tears. It looks to me like a few seconds of nothing much. I'm sure the yellow T-shirts and signs and some shouting was a little distracting, and a contrast to all the thousands of other people, but it's hardly a major incident.

grumpygrape · 15/06/2026 16:35

Interesting Yahoo had to find a photo not taken at the Trooping to show her ‘glare’. From the video, I didn’t see anything other than a neutral expression. People have the right to protest and others have the right not to like it but I really don’t think her neutral look was newsworthy; just media hype.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 15/06/2026 16:44

If those kids are being paraded around to learn how to be Royal then maybe the protesters will do a better job than the RF themselves have at teaching their children to check their privilege, and that they are there for as long as the people want them there. They should learn that if they behave appallingly there is always a chance they will be found out and end up with their face on a placard, no matter how many strings they manage to pull, it will catch up with them.

I agree.

I don’t want a monarchy. But in order for me to vote to get rid of it, I’d want to see the actual alternative that I’d be voting for. Not “vote to get rid and we’ll figure out the details later”.

same.

If you're not in favour of something, campaign to change it. Lobby your MP, provide facts and figures to influence people, etc. Don't attend a day out other people enjoy and shout things at young children. It's just embarrassing.

I think I prefer a monarchy to a presidency, like America

tiredallweek · 15/06/2026 16:57

And personally, I hate twatty protests like this that disrupt something many others are enjoying.

HoppityBun · 15/06/2026 14:25

Let them eat cake.

That’s what the expectant mum (see thread) visiting her friend and getting nothing wanted

CokeinBottles · 15/06/2026 17:00

If you take enough photos of someone, you can pretty much get one showing any facial expression you want. I'd put zero weight on a single snap where she appears to be very slightly cross.

tiredallweek · 15/06/2026 16:53

The presidency in America is not the same as HOS Presidency like in Ireland. There is a huge difference. In America the President is the supreme boss, in Ireland the President is HOS, a figurehead similar to the role of the King. No real power, but represents the country at home and abroad in an apolitical way, and rubberstamps legislation.

BCSurvivor · 15/06/2026 17:09

LlynTegid · 15/06/2026 13:09

Peaceful protest fine, booing adults fine. I think you should not have booed the children in the Royal Family.

I want a smaller Royal family similar to the Netherlands and Denmark.

But the slimmed down, smaller monarchy would also need to have a slimmed down and smaller cost.
Because the UK monarchy is by far the most expensive monarchy in Europe,

CurlewKate · 15/06/2026 17:13

That picture appears to have been taken last autumn. Or am I missing something?

mummypigoink · 15/06/2026 17:15

It’s an attempt at studied neutrality (better than her continuing to smile) and I think it’s more likely she’s being watchful in case anyone tries anything. I know there’s security etc etc but if i were sat there with my kids, I’d be keeping an eye out too.

Whatever you think of the monarchy, the kids being present etc etc, W&C do seem to think hard about what they do and don’t take the children to. They will have explained to them about protesters and be comfortable the children understand.

And whatever you think of Republic, they have the right to peacefully protest which they did. They will have made a lot of noise when everyone else went past too, but Catherine and the children by far will generate the most clicks. And comment.
