Why is Prince George not going to secondary school until after he turns 13?

Prince William reveals Prince George, 12, is already boarding at £10,669-a-term Lambrook School mol.im/a/15846933 via https://dailym.ai/android

I saw this article in the DM saying Prince George is currently boarding at Lambrook "ahead of moving to his secondary school in September". He turns 13 in July so the thought occurred to me - why is he still in primary school? Should he not have started secondary in 2024 when he was 11?

So not sure why the Royal Family has this supposed rep of not being intelligent.

It’s a popular mumsnet view - the Royal Family are all thick. Etonians are also all thick.

In fairness I have come across a few old Etonians through work (law) and it was common knowledge they were deeply lacking in the intellectual front and only kept on in their respective firms because they had connections with deep pockets and a need for lots of legal advice . They are probably nearing retirement age now though so I have no idea about the younger generations

King Charles and Queen Elizabeth both come/came across as very intelligent, measured and very well educated/knowledgeable.

Prince Philip was also a highly intelligent man with a huge range of interests.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.
It wasn't until he died i realised how hands on he was with DoE awards, I always assumed it was named after him but not that he was fundamental in setting it up. A bit like hospitals and streets are named after Royals.
Or the WWF I had zero idea he was a founder of that.

Really clever guy carving his own line out

@Ziegfeld - why do they have to tell anyone before September when he starts and will be in his uniform? When they may share a pic. I thought they told the public more widely once they started last time.

They don’t have to tell now but I think they might well. It avoids the risk of it leaking - which becomes more likely by the day - plus the family is keen on being normal and it’s normal these days for prep school leavers to do various stuff with their new school cohort once everyone’s places are confirmed. Lambrook was a bit different as it was all three of them at once, it was linked to their move out of London and PG was not joining at the traditional age, ie Y4 and wasn’t boarding.

HelenaWilson · 10/06/2026 20:02

Maybe they'll announce it around the time of his birthday in July. There'll be some attention on him then anyway as he's turning 13, so it gets it all over with at once.

It'll be just after the end of term too, so a natural transition point.

Did you know where everyone in your company went to school?
At my work (I’m retired now) I have no idea where any of my colleagues went to school - apart from one who talked about her school reunions.

Araminta1003 · 10/06/2026 20:30

Well I think Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Redmayne are pretty popular on here.

Boris Johnson was hardly Eric’s finest, nor Oxford Uni’s for that matter.

Araminta1003 · 10/06/2026 20:30

That was meant to say Eton’s finest, hehe

Decacaffeinatednow · 10/06/2026 20:31

Also Damian Lewis, George Orwell, Ian Fleming..

Araminta1003 · 10/06/2026 20:33

Aldous Huxley as well.

Eton is probably far more quirky and less traditional than people assume.
Westminster too with Dido, Helena Bonham Carter, A A Milne etc. Louis Theroux, Lloyd Webber.
The lefties prefer Westminster because of Tony Benn.

They were the only ones who went on about where they went to school.... No one else really discussed it Wink

King Charles went to Cambridge but it was widely accepted that he got in because of who he was. He isn't stupid but he isn't an intellectual whizz. He and his mother do seem to have been very wise in their use of advisors.
Diana was genuinely dim and unfortunately passed the absent cranium on to Harry.
William does seem to be bursting in the brain department but does seem to be wise and listens to trusted advisors.
Catherine looks sharp as a knife so hopefully her brains and both their wisdom is passed on.

Aye, more holidays in the sun. Gallivanting around the globe. Living the dream!😃

Didn't he only just miss out on a First? And he was at Eton on a scholarship, I believe. He can't have been dim.

He's not that dim. That's what is so dangerous about him, that so many people fall for the bumbling performance

Araminta1003 · 10/06/2026 21:46

I didn’t mean academic intelligence regarding Boris Johnson. I meant lacking in character and hence not the finest representation.
Because the way I understood it, Eton prides itself more on “boy to man” and character building and finding a talent/shine.
I do know some contemporaries of Boris Johnson who claim he started as a hard working serious boy who morphed into more of a joker and gave a quite risqué leaving speech. But this is entirely second hand anecdotal from friends, who may have been easily outraged.

I know people in real life who have known for a long time where Prince George is going to school, down to the exact house. I am impressed people have kept schtumm about it and that it wasn’t leaked to the press or online. It includes children who knew. Well done them.
Makes me think Prince George is going to be OK as he has good people surrounding him who will be loyal to him. Despite social media etc.

I don't think you do.

@viques
Harry started in Eton the year after his mother died. There were probably compassionate reasons for allowing him to go where William was and he would be close to Windsor.

Fair enough comment, not something I had thought of.

But there is no need for George to be given such allowance, and to be fair to him it would be very difficult and demoralising if he wasn’t able to keep up academically. Could be that Harry’s sense of inferiority was fostered by his experience of being in a school where academic success is expected.

I'd agree thats a logical point for them to announce it. Birthday photo & he'll be off to x school in August.

Schrodinger’s Eton: academic success is expected but all Etonians are thick.

Burner phone/SIM for school contacts? No issue.

Edited

Oh God I'm still rolling about at the whole servant sorting a play date and W&K having burner phones.

Yes they probably do, but all of it is hilarious. Do potential playdates require a police check, scanned for cameras?
Or is it posh kids, who attend posh schools all have their own issues with security etc so its all just trust?

I don't think Harry has shown any sense of inferiority and he didn't do badly at Eton; he was an average sort of guy, not an academic high flyer but was OK.

Remind me again, what was it he called his book?

Oh yes.

Spare.

As if that doesn’t indicate a sense of inferiority …………

The servant then reaches for his quill pen and scribes on a vellum scroll: 'The mama of Fa-fa-farquar is commanded by Her Most Royal Highness the Princess of Wales to supply dates on which Fa-fa-faquar would have the freedom and leisure to pass a convivial three hours with His Royal Highness Prince George and partake of afternoon tea at the Forest Lodge in the Great Park of Windsor. At the foot of this scroll is provided the space for the appending of dates and dietary preferences.'

A junior servant next mounts a horse to convey the scroll, wrapped in a pig's bladder for protection against the rain, to the home of Fa-fa-faquar and his mama.

🤣

DH still says partake 😄

Decacaffeinatednow · 11/06/2026 09:47

Charlotte and Louis are referred to as spares. When Harry was born the newspapers of the time referred to him as the spare - William and Harry 'the heir and the spare' was a common theme. He didn't just make the title up.

Have you read his book? it’s full of petty grudges indicating he felt inferior to William, from who had the best bed in the nursery onwards
