It's not a minor crime. The BBC just said it can carry up to a life sentence.

I think that really depends on the details. Life sentence sounds more like being an active spy for another country and deliberately passing on info that triggered massive damage. In this case Andrew will almost certainly claim to have passed on something unintentionally or been misled or deceived by someone on the other side. Play up the buffoon image. There were also no economic consequences of any sort and nobody knows or even gives a shit what sort of information was passed on.

It would be incredibly difficult to pinpoint exactly what happened at some trade conference many years ago so in the end it'll almost certainly be a slap on the wrist. Jail is incredibly unlikely since he's not in active office anymore and all the people involved are either dead or also not working in the same roles.

They knew that his Queen paid off Virgina Giuffre and that he has been lying for ages.

I don't think he has been arrested in connection with Giuffre though. He seems to have been arrested for the trade envoy stuff.

MurkyMo · 19/02/2026 10:23

And it's his birthday!!! 😆

“A man in his sixties, from Norfolk…”

I bet that description stings!

I wonder if he is sweating yet?

😂😂

Agree. And for the Kings brother to he arrested for misconduct in a public office, passing confidential government information on not only to Epstein but it seems other people too is very serious indeed.

Absolutely. Far more serious than anything that has yet happened to any American in the files.

How annoying I gave up Mumsnet for Lent and then this happens!
Bloody hell Ive never been happier to be proved wrong! I dont see how they can keep the trade envoy files sealed now. If there is evidence of criminal activity in them it looks like, instead of investigating them at the time, they were sealed for 100 years. This needs to be investigated too.

I wonder if the arrest means they have already been unsealed? Would we know?

Those demanding links and saying they can’t ‘see’ it…Are you waiting for a proclamation or something?

I think the Palace have put up an official proclamation on the gates of Buckingham Palace, just like they do with royal births!
😂

A horrific outcome would be if they simply charge him for wrongdoing in public office, eg passing on some info during his days as trade envoy. Then he essentially gets trialled and punished for eyes of the public but it's a slap on the wrist compared to the other crimes and trafficking.

A conspiracy side thinks this may have been previously agreed upon, or the best solution Charles could come up with. He gets arrested for a minor white collar crime and the rest is just glossed over. One can only hope that once things get to a court of law, someone in there has a sense of justice and common sense and does their best to bash out all the other charges.

Edited

Mmm, you're right. I suspect that's exactly what will happen.

Exactly this.

On the statute, yes a serious crime but it will be something and nothing and end quickly I would have imagined. Probably not so for Mandelson funny enough because he was actually in government

Its not like AMW has been arrested for rape or assault.

wishingonastar101 · 19/02/2026 10:26

Time to get rid of them all.. parasites.

crossedlines · 19/02/2026 10:26

First of many arrests?

Misconduct in public office is a serious crime that can carry a life sentence. Him being arrested for that offence doesn't preclude him being arrested for crimes related to sex trafficking or sex with a minor,

florence1234567 · 19/02/2026 10:26

Is it bad that this gave me a big smile?

nomas · 19/02/2026 10:27

Arrested on his birthday AND the day he presumably gets his state pension 🤣

Frenchfrychic · 19/02/2026 10:27

MrsLeonFarrell · 19/02/2026 10:23

I’m not sure you can be arrested for having sex with a minor in another country, especially as over the age of consent here. I am also not sure they can prove it as he keeps saying he didn’t, as he would and Virgina took the pay out, to not proceed further,

what they have done though is hugely serious and carries a much heavier tariff,

LizzieSiddal · 19/02/2026 10:27

likelysuspect · 19/02/2026 10:21

Its only for misconduct in a public office

He is in custody.

Nice!!

Yes but it does carry up to a life sentence so I’m hoping he’s sweating in fear at this very moment.

simpsonthecat · 19/02/2026 10:27

Ihateboris · 19/02/2026 10:19

The Royalists will be on soon to defend him...

They flippin' better not!

There is no getting away with the seriousness of this. And there is NO defence.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 19/02/2026 10:28

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an announcement to say he’s popped his clogs at some point.

Just to correct this, being a royal over 'millennia' has usually and very often come with huge ramifications for breaking whatever law was deemed at the time. People literally lost their lives over it. Not just monarchs, their siblings, cousins, wives, aristocrats

To suggest they've been untouchable throughout history is ridiculous.

dapsnotplimsolls · 19/02/2026 10:28

I think the RF will say nothing or make a bland statement about an inability to say anything.

Vaxtable · 19/02/2026 10:28

Just because he has been arrested doesn’t mean he will be charged with anything. It all needs to play out

RainbowBagels · 19/02/2026 10:29

fairmaidofutopia · 19/02/2026 10:17

I think the King and the rest of the RF will let justice take its course. This is the only way that it may prevent the rest of them going down with him. I honestly do not think Charles or William had knowledge, detailed knowledge of what he was doing. It’s not like they have a normal sibling relationship. I have no idea of the potential punishments for this, but the very fact that he has been arrested is a big step forward

They must have been extremely ignorant of what he was doing when he was inviting streams of young girls into the Palace, to Balmoral, Sandringham snd sex offenders to his daughters birthday party! They are either a close family or they aren't. They cant be one thing for PR photo opportunities and barely speak to each other from one decade to the next when it comes to plausible deniability. They will need a Spanish RF style shakedown after this, id imagine, and it serves them all right.

Oh I completely agree with you. Unfortunately though, some people can see no wrong in any of this bloody awful dysfunctional family.
