The royal family

AIBU to think the King’s speech was completely irrelevant to most of us

I know he’s head of the church but he’s also head of the country in general and religion is not a top priority for the vast majority of the people he supposedly represents. If the RF want to stay relevant it’s about time they used their positions for something more useful than spouting a bunch of fairy stories that cause many of the world’s biggest problems.

Aaah, so busy pontificating at us that you didn't get the right word and messed up the meaning of your sentence. Incoherent?

I’m not the monarch making a speech in front of the entire nation, am I?

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 25/12/2025 19:26

I've just watched it. You'd have to be monumentally thick to think it wasn't inclusive and relevant. But then, I do find lots of people are monumentally thick. Poor things.

Completely incoherent and he could barely walk. An embarrassing moment

What? I am not a royalist and I felt that what he said was bland and forgettable. But incoherent? Why? Do you understand what incoherent means?

Also, why do you think he could barely walk? There was no evidence of mobility problems. And even if there were, so what? Everyone has periods of their life where they are not that mobile. How is that a criticism of a person?

It’s such an odd couple of things to say about someone. As I said, I’m not a supporter. He talks bland, vague platitudes and he’s getting on, not as vigorous. But incoherent and barely walking? What?

Unifying, unless you’re not a Christian.

Why, there was a reference to the bondi beach terrorist attract against the Jewish community and a segment where he was seen walking with a rabbi for instance? It wasn’t just about Christianity

SomedayIllBeSaturdayNight · 25/12/2025 19:31

I really liked it. A bit more unity and compassion is what we all need for sure!

Staringintothevoid616 · 25/12/2025 19:33

everywhereeverything1 · 25/12/2025 18:02

I meant the speech was an embarrassment.

So you made a derogatory remark about people with mobility issues???? WTAF???

Sarover · 25/12/2025 19:34

@everywhereeverything1 in what way was he ‘lecturing?’ He was giving his opinion on the TV. He’s not your dad or headteacher telling you off. If you are an educated adult you can just shrug your shoulders and decide for yourself that you have a difference of opinion with him. Or you could turn it off. He’s not going to give you a detention or fine you. It’s just a person saying things you don’t agree with. That’s not a ‘lecture’.

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/12/2025 19:39

@sprigatito ’Industrial Strengh Benefit Scrounger’ is one of the best things I’ve ever read. 👏🏼

JSMill · 25/12/2025 19:43

The King made a speech about religion on the day of one of the most important days in Christianity and you have a problem with it? I have a feeling from your tone, there’s nothing he could have done that would have suited you.

LidlAmaretto · 25/12/2025 19:47

I never watch the Kings speech but complaining about the Head of the C of E talking about religion on Christmas day! Its like moaning about The Pope giving a sermon on Easter Sunday from the Vatican.

IidentifyastheGrinch · 25/12/2025 19:57

@everywhereeverything1 I'm no royalist and have never watched a Monarch's speech but mocking people because of their mobility issues is grim

TeideHeart · 25/12/2025 20:04

I just watched it. I'm not Christian, nor a loyalist.

He wants people to connect more and have more friendships, in a world that moves fast and feels fractured.

Seems fair enough. And quite relevant.

He comes across as sincere. And as a man who's faced his own mortality, I see nothing wrong with him focusing on both his own faith and the faiths of others.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/12/2025 20:16

What this ‘us’ you mention in your title out of interest ? Do you mean ‘you’ - ? ‘us’ in UK includes all kinds of ages, religions, income levels, people who do a lot of community stuff plus people who don’t give a shit about such stuff - there really is no ‘us’ -

TubeScreamer · 25/12/2025 20:17

I thought it was very good.

Mistletoeiggi · 25/12/2025 20:22

I thought he did well

Of course it wasn't irrelevant - it was appropriate for everyone.
And Christmas is a Christian festival (lest we forget), so if the Head of the Church of England can't make some reference to the true meaning of it all, it would be pretty poor.

Also, several of the images showed support for the Jews, and people of other faiths. After the year we've had, especially the vile antisemitism, that's exactly what I want to see from my Head of State.

What do you want him to talk about? Peeling sprouts and filling your house with over-priced tat? No, thanks!

Except it’s not. Every culture/religion has a midwinter festival, the Christian’s appropriated the winter solstice to get the pagans to play ball. Saturnalia, Sol Invictus, Yule, all celebrated around this time of year long before Christmas was.

His speech was fine…you just don’t like him….fair enough….but don’t lie about it

I find it funny how so many people rail against the RF but still watch the speech, just so they can come on MN and pull it to pieces. If someone I didn't like was giving a speech to the nation I wouldn't watch it.

Some people really need to get a life!

People said he was bonkers for his environmental views as well. Maybe it’s true that we all could use a bit more faith.
I believe there is a bit of a Christian resurgence globally.

The last thing the world needs is more religion, the cause of so many problems.

I don’t mind Charles but I thought he said a lot of nothing. It’s not relevant because the RF aren’t relevant to a lot of us. People have lost any respect they had for them when it’s obvious they knew about Andrew’s behaviour and did nothing. The Queen paid off his victim, they’re all still not really saying anything even with more recent developments. A lot of people have had enough of them.

It’s unnecessary for anyone to mention his ability to walk though. I didn’t notice, but he is nearly 80 and does have cancer so no need to criticise his mobility.

You do realise Christmas doesn't fall in winter for some of us, and yet we still celebrate it (and don't have a midwinter festival at all). You can whine all you like, Christmas is a Christian festival.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/12/2025 20:30

Sorry but that's like saying why does the Pope keep banging on about religion all the time, there are more important things.
He's the pope, the head of the catholic church. The king is the head of the church of England. What do you expect. He's also quite elderly and has had a lot of cancer treatment, how is that an embarrassment?
I think you need to take a long hard look at yourself.

Do you actually understand the meaning of the word incoherent?

As far as I can see, the only embarrassing moment was your post.

Yes, and I find lots of people self-righteous and patronising

MyRoseRaven · 25/12/2025 20:35

The early Christians were tortured and killed by the Romans for hundreds of years so why would they want to take over their"pagan" festivals? The early Christian Church calculated and decided upon the birth of Christ around the 2nd century AD from writings in the old testament (Jewish Torah) and the new testament. I'm not religious but the lack of historical fact around these assumptions annoy me.

I didn’t watch it (because I have a life)

I still post on threads about the “King”, however, because I live in this country, I’m a taxpayer and an adult and my opinions about the ludicrousness of hereditary power are as valid as the cow-eyed forelock-tugging of the MN jam and Jerusalem brigade.
