I don’t think they’ll ever reach the level of success and public adoration they’re chasing, not as a united front anyway.
If Harry wanted to revive his golden boy status, he’d have to distance himself from Meghan and return to the UK looking suitably repentant. The public would eventually rally around him as Diana’s son, and the palace could easily frame him as the wide eyed innocent swept up by a more calculating partner (assuming William ever agreed to let him back in).
Meghan’s PR path would be much tougher. She’d have to go nuclear, casting Harry as an absent or abusive partner while painting herself as the one holding the whole mess together. But in a head to head PR battle, the palace machinery would crush anything she could mount. Even their most dramatic claims about the royals backfired and made them look like the bad guys.
I really hope it never comes to a divorce. They do seem genuinely devoted to each other, but they’ve both shown they can be vindictive, and Meghan’s reputation for dropping people when they’re no longer useful doesn’t help her reputation (nor do the Vanity Fair rumours about post-divorce book deals.)
Hopefully they can settle into the life they’ve chosen and embrace being an unpopular but relatively comfortably duo, instead of hurling each other under the nearest bus for one last frantic attempt to haul their individual brands out of the bargain bin.
