Both Charles and William talk about slimming down the monarchy. One area that bugs me enormously is the "royal residence" property portfolio, both owned by the Crown and the monarch. In London there's Buckingham Palace, which nobody seems to want to live in, Clarence House, St James's Palace and Kensington Palace. There simply aren't enough Royals to justify that number of working residences.
Then just outside London they have not only Windsor Castle, but also all the properties in Windsor Great and Home Parks. And Bagshot Park which has over 100 rooms.
In Norfolk it's not just Sandringham but all the other properties on the estate, including Anmer Hall and Wood Farm.
Scotland of course has Holyyrood and Balmoral and its estate properties, as well as the Castle of Mey. Not sure about ownership of Dumfries House.
And then there's Highgrove, and Charles' house in Wales. Its just too much. In the not too distant future the RF is going to be the Waleses and the Edinburghs. They simply do not need so much. Many places were brought into the portfolio to house children of the monarch, and given the size of both George III and Victoria & Albert's families, that's understandable.
But the sheer number of properties at their disposal is obscene especially given W's focus on homelessness, and the relative sizes of the RF then and now.
