Andrew, Sarah & a Royal Lodge question

MoondustandFairies · 20/10/2025 00:42

Following some of the news stories about Andrew relinquishing Titles & a more local news story saying that he & his ex wife will continue to live in the Royal Lodge makes me wonder how that can be funded. Can they be made to leave if they can't pay?

It has 7 - or 12? - bedrooms so I expect it requires a bit of mopping & dusting each week - so do A & S also employ staff to maintain the property.

Not sure how old they both are either, maybe close to retirement?? but how do they fund a lifestyle without being propped up by the RF. Which prob won't please William too.
Just my tuppence worth question wondering how non working ex Royals with no marketable skills will pay staff wages & buy groceries.

@Puzzledandpissedoff I have seen no evidence of his "revulsion at the sight of an invoice", but perhaps you have.

I have no idea. I just think it's a very strange criticism. Knocking someone for commissioning original music!
I suppose some people just don't value live music.

It's not so much commissioning live music per se. It was the idea of twelve (twelve!) pieces and all having to be shoehorned into what was billed as a cut down time of an hour and a half.

It doesn't leave much time for any individual piece to be properly appreciated when the next one's hot on its heels.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/11/2025 10:21

Look up Roy Strong and his work at Highgrove, @MrsEmmelineLucas, or how the artwork for the "Transylvania Florilegium" and several of his garden featues came to be provided ... I'll find other examples if you're interested

Interestingly, and on the prior subject, even the post of Master of their Music is unpaid. It seems some consider it an honour just to be appointed, though never ask me why

I agree, @MrsEmmelineLucas, but then it's nice too if the provider gets paid for their hard work and considering the widespread reports of Charles's revulsion at the sight of an invoice I have to wonder if they too were expected to work for free

It's never been established, Puzzled.

AI makes a waffly reference to either the SG or 'private funds' picking up the tab but I think we probably can guess which.

I'm sorry, I don't see the problem with 12 pieces of music?
You've lost me there. However, I'm a musician and have played more pieces than that in concerts and in Cathedrals.

I'm not hugely interested, tbh. People tend to be millionaires for a reason. I've no idea how KC's finances stand up, but evidently you do.
My point is about the commissioning of music, but I've made my point on that! Others obviously disagree.

I don't suppose you were being annointed with special oil out of sight of the audience and fitted with sparkly headwear in-between pieces though.

jeffgoldblum · 12/11/2025 10:35

I can’t get upset about whether they were paid or not , seems to be the modern influencer way now to not pay for services with anything more than the honour of being linked to said people!
perhaps Charles is more modern than we think 🤔, he’s the ultimate influencer! 🤣

Edited

If only! I'd bloody love some sparkly head gear! The Black Prince's Ruby? Mary, Queen of Scots' pearls? Bring it on. I wouldn't even care about the weight, I'd take neurofen and push on 😉

😂
I hear he picked up the tab for H&M's wedding, which was a fairly lavish affair!
Or maybe "Hello!" did?

He must have been gutted to hear the real one had taken place three days before ☕

I have a nibling (?) who is a budding composer so have a huge vested interest in music being commissioned!

Excellent 👌! I hope they get commissioned!

Did Charles order portraits or is that something the Government do automatically on Accession? I can the purpose in Embassies but I would agree cutting down on them is probably prudent.

I agree. Nearly all of us have the ability to look at a photo of Charles at any time courtesy of our phones.

I don’t know if he ordered the portraits or not but the budget for them was £8million.

As I said upthread, the govt commission portraits of the Head of State, which are usually displayed in public places. I don't think it's an alternative to checking his appearance on your phone. I think it's probably one of those things that's just a bit obsolete now.

I think it’s obsolete too. I wondering what’s your opinion as to why?

Because we know what the Head of State looks like, and don't need reminders of them?

This is well worth a read. It describes how portraits were used as propaganda in Africa and the Empire.

That's a great article. As a Fine Arts graduate this kind of thing was standard. I also developed a huge interest in photography and how it can be manipulated for effect. Every Western country had their Empire and again you gain great insight from investigating contemporary sources of all kinds which of course we question today.

Right ! , I clicked on that despite thinking your post was a reach and frankly I’m wondering why you think linking Victorian portraits sent to colonies are comparable to the government issuing a coronation portrait of the new monarch to hang in U.K. establishments?!
I doubt even republicans like puzzled or Cathy care about anything more than a perceived waste of public funds .

jumpingthehighjump · 12/11/2025 13:02

This portrait business just smacks of North Korea to me. Portraits and statues everywhere of a dear Leader.

We know what Charles looks like, we don't need a portrait in our Doctors surgery to remind us.
Complete waste of money. An embarrassment.
