The royal family

Andrew, Sarah & a Royal Lodge question

Following some of the news stories about Andrew relinquishing Titles & a more local news story saying that he & his ex wife will continue to live in the Royal Lodge makes me wonder how that can be funded. Can they be made to leave if they can't pay?

It has 7 - or 12? - bedrooms so I expect it requires a bit of mopping & dusting each week - so do A & S also employ staff to maintain the property.

Not sure how old they both are either, maybe close to retirement?? but how do they fund a lifestyle without being propped up by the RF. Which prob won't please William too.
Just my tuppence worth question wondering how non working ex Royals with no marketable skills will pay staff wages & buy groceries.

he didn't understand that his job as 'spare' is to protect the Monarchy at all costs
It will be very interesting to see what Charlotte and Louis do in their adult years. Will George be the only one to be an active working member of the Royal family in 30 years time.

MrsEmmelineLucas · 11/11/2025 10:19

As William said to Eugene Levy, things are going to be very different.

There's a big difference between saying and doing

Let's see. Perhaps William could start off by paying for his own Coronation. I was hoping Charles would, but sadly, no.

He could gain respect if he did that.

Totally agree. Talk is cheap. Can't see W changing anything that would impact the wealth of his family.

He has said he wants to Royal with a small 'r'.
I think we know what that means! Just see us for state occasions or favourite sport and we'll still need all that money!

MrsEmmelineLucas · 11/11/2025 11:48

Ah well. All will be clear at some point.

Yep. Although I bet if people start asking questions about why we are paying for William to go to the footy, Kate to go to the tennis and little else, they will all be running back to the ribbon cutting rather than losing the cash.

MrsLeonFarrell · 11/11/2025 15:01

We all have our own opinions on how much work William and Catherine do but even a cursory glance at their Instagram account shows that saying they just go to football and tennis is inaccurate. None of us know what kind of King William will be so we all make assumptions based on our own biases.

I'm not sure though how a thread about Andrew and Royal Lodge has turned into guessing how King William will act.

It's interesting, because several Andrew threads morphed into criticism of William and Catherine. It seems to go that way.
Good points.

ShenandoahRiver · 11/11/2025 15:32

I think threads broaden out into wider discussions sometimes especially when they get past 3 or 4 pages. It's no harm either to discuss the wider aspects of how the RF operates now and may operate in the future especially given the culture of secrecy and opacity that allowed the Yorks to behave the way they did for decades.

Spot on.

Mmm. Funny how it always goes the same way, though.

....until, eventually, most of the RF threads morph into each other and I forget which I'm on....

Too true! I would have thought there's enough to discuss about the former York family, but hey.

ShenandoahRiver · 12/11/2025 08:04

@MrsEmmelineLucas
Maybe start a new thread about the Yorks.

Why?
There have been plenty. They tend to go the same way. Perhaps you could start one. See how it goes.

I'm not on IG and I definitely can't be arsed to go seeking out a bit of royal puffery.

Maybe they could just, I don't know. Stick it in the Court Circular where at a minimum it'll be picked up by the press or something?

As for W's coro, all I can hope is he's not thinking of commissioning twelve new pieces of music and a mug shot for every town hall...

MrsEmmelineLucas · 12/11/2025 09:57

I think commissioning new music is an excellent idea. It's increasingly difficult for musicians nowadays to get new pieces performed, so I hope William copies his father in this.

Each to our own. I find it interesting to see how many visits and tours simply aren't mentioned in the press at all.

Did Charles order portraits or is that something the Government do automatically on Accession? I can the purpose in Embassies but I would agree cutting down on them is probably prudent.

Charles does seem to be an informed and enthusiastic Patron of many arts and heritage crafts. It's good that someone who can afford to supports the cultural life of the country in this way.

How many can now name the composers (without googling!)

I think Andrew Lloyd Webber might have been one but not entirely sure.

If he was he'd kicked around for a good few years.

Possibly.

Guess he could always have turned them down though or as you say limited them to embassies.

I think the surplus (they weren't snapped up) got offered to schools in the end.

I don't think it's his decision - portraits of the Head of State are routinely commissioned and hang in public places.

I have no idea. I just think it's a very strange criticism. Knocking someone for commissioning original music!
I suppose some people just don't value live music.

I agree, @MrsEmmelineLucas, but then it's nice too if the provider gets paid for their hard work and considering the widespread reports of Charles's revulsion at the sight of an invoice I have to wonder if they too were expected to work for free
