Andrew, Sarah & a Royal Lodge question

MoondustandFairies · 20/10/2025 00:42

Following some of the news stories about Andrew relinquishing Titles & a more local news story saying that he & his ex wife will continue to live in the Royal Lodge makes me wonder how that can be funded. Can they be made to leave if they can't pay?

It has 7 - or 12? - bedrooms so I expect it requires a bit of mopping & dusting each week - so do A & S also employ staff to maintain the property.

Not sure how old they both are either, maybe close to retirement?? but how do they fund a lifestyle without being propped up by the RF. Which prob won't please William too.
Just my tuppence worth question wondering how non working ex Royals with no marketable skills will pay staff wages & buy groceries.

Close to retirement? Has she done a days work in her life?

It will be 7 toff level bedrooms, meaning they include dressing rooms, bathrooms etc, plus any number of smaller rooms which a normal person would count as a bedroom.
There will likely be one or more corridors of staff bedrooms in the attic - there’s no way on earth the 7 includes those and no way the building isn’t designed to house live in staff.

This is giving saltburn vibes

meercat23 · 27/10/2025 18:03

Apart from the settlement she got in the divorce she was also given money by the Queen to buy a home for herself and her daughters. She sold that when she moved in with Andrew again. She has been provided for, nothing more is needed.

Zippedydodah · 27/10/2025 19:01

She starting to be like a bad smell that lingers.

“Starting”?

I think she’s been that for a very long time’

Baital · 28/10/2025 01:04

Are they getting anything from the public purse these days?

Not so far as I know.

She's not going to start now that she's 66.

She bought a house in Belgravia in 2022 for £4.2 million which she sold about 8 weeks ago (at a loss) for £3.85 million so she presumably has some money

I think Andrew used to get an allowance from Charles - IIRC around £1 million per year - but Charles stopped paying after Andrew didn't spend any of the money on property maintenance

Yes he did but the allowance was from Charles' money not the public purse.

That's what I thought- family money of some sort. Nothing from the tax payer for a few years now (except his Navy pension, but he should be treated like anyone else for that, whatever he's done)

Baital · 29/10/2025 13:41

So the 'Andrew/ SF shouldn't be able to leavh off the public purse' falls into the same category as the outrage over Royal Lodge having 30 bedrooms...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/10/2025 14:29

Imagine being so rich you can give an allowance of a million a year to your brother. Who you don’t even like.
And then the brother finds it so insufficient he has to go around schmoozing paedophiles and dictators to get more.

SloughResident · 29/10/2025 14:46

@OnlyOnAFriday , I said 'close to retirement age'.

It's crazy isn't it?

Pays no/fuck all rent & it's not enough!

Doesn’t Charles’ money originate from the public purse?

MrsLeonFarrell · 29/10/2025 16:21

Allseeingallknowing · 29/10/2025 16:14

Doesn’t Charles’ money originate from the public purse?

No. It is a mixture of private wealth, the Duchy of Lancaster, overseen by the government, and the Sovereign Grant. Of course with the Royal family finance isn't that transparent but it isn't from the public purse.

Incidentally, not really anything to do with the quoted post, i know there is a popular narrative that the Royal family stole their money and lands from "us" as if they are unique but I have never understood that argument. All wealthy people get their wealth from others, there isn't a neutral pot of money lying around that we all share. The Royals family are simply the aristocrats who played the game of thrones best and who won. There are plenty of other aristocrats who gained land in similar ways.

Serenster · 29/10/2025 16:23

Allseeingallknowing · 29/10/2025 16:14

Doesn’t Charles’ money originate from the public purse?

No. Charles gets a proportion of the annual revenue of The Crown Estates (which is expected to be spent on official duties and an inviting the palaces held in trust for the nation amongst other things), and has the revenue of the Duchy of Lancaster.

The pubic purse (i.e. funds coming from taxpayers) pays for security for the royal family, as it also has for security for MPs etc.

Baital · 29/10/2025 17:04

A quick Google suggests an income of £1 million per year would need about £15 million of assets (very much a rough calculation!).

According to the Sunday Times KC3 has about £640 million, 238th in the UK, along with Rishi Sunak

And yes, no-one accumulate that amount of wealth without a lot of other people going without. The same applies to everyone numbers 1-237 on the rich list...

I am all for a fairer redistribution of wealth. But there's no point cherry picking one and ignoring the others.

King Charles III visits Cartwright Hall, an art gallery and community cultural space in Bradford, England on 15 May 2025.

The King's personal wealth is now equal to former prime minister Rishi Sunak and his wife at £640m.

And therein lies the rub. We have NO IDEA how much the security costs because apparently it is a security risk to know this.
Course it is!

It will be many hundreds of millions no doubt

ShenandoahRiver · 29/10/2025 19:04

The absolute lack of transparency around the finances of the RF is staggering and nothing short of a scandal.
They lie, cover up, obfuscate, hide behind legislation- they do all in their power to maintain the secrecy. All of them.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/10/2025 19:32

Indeed, @ShenandoahRiver, and this is why I don't automatically believe that Andrew's allowance and security costs came from their private money simply because they got some spokesman to say so

Especially when even the late Queen tried to dip into a fund intended for the vulnerable in order to pay for palace heating:

Totally

And yet - to some - they can do NO wrong. Why?
It makes no sense

And I think people hold out hope for William.
I would make a big bet now - nothing will change. Except some very clever PR to make you think changes have been made. But all will be the same
