The royal family

Andrew, Sarah & a Royal Lodge question

MoondustandFairies · 20/10/2025 00:42

Following some of the news stories about Andrew relinquishing Titles & a more local news story saying that he & his ex wife will continue to live in the Royal Lodge makes me wonder how that can be funded. Can they be made to leave if they can't pay?

It has 7 - or 12? - bedrooms so I expect it requires a bit of mopping & dusting each week - so do A & S also employ staff to maintain the property.

Not sure how old they both are either, maybe close to retirement?? but how do they fund a lifestyle without being propped up by the RF. Which prob won't please William too.
Just my tuppence worth question wondering how non working ex Royals with no marketable skills will pay staff wages & buy groceries.

The pubic purse (i.e. funds coming from taxpayers) pays for security for the royal family, as it also has for security for MPs etc

And therein lies the rub. We have NO IDEA how much the security costs because apparently it is a security risk to know this.
Course it is!

It will be many hundreds of millions no doubt

I imagine it is. We would incur those costs whether the King or a President was our Head of State, though. It goes with the position.

(And if you have a regularly changing Head of State, like Prime Ministers, they will also be protected after they leave office, so the overall bill might well go up).

Does Liz Truss get security as an ex-PM? And her money making attempts in the USA?

Apparently she and Boris get an allowance for their private offices as ex-PM

Yes, or so it is generally understood.

She also gets a £115,000 per annum tax free allowance to deal with her personal administration, plus a pension of £150,000 a year. All because she was PM for six weeks.

Indeed, @ShenandoahRiver, and this is why I don't automatically believe that Andrew's allowance and security costs came from their private money simply because they got some spokesman to say so

Especially when even the late Queen tried to dip into a fund intended for the vulnerable in order to pay for palace heating:

Thank you for that link. I'm shocked at the bloody cheek of them, wanting a handout from a fund that is for low income households. Shock

jumpingthehighjump · 29/10/2025 20:18

Totally

And yet - to some - they can do NO wrong. Why?
It makes no sense

And I think people hold out hope for William.
I would make a big bet now - nothing will change. Except some very clever PR to make you think changes have been made. But all will be the same

I agree.

I find it amusing that Charles is being written off as a bit of a no hoper and William is the next big hope. Yet his history is of someone that has hardly been enthusiastic about work. (Charles actually does have a reputation for being diligent about his duties).

@Puzzledandpissedoff 👍 thank you.

I’d forgotten about that.

Not necessarily. One Head of State versus a Monarch and the wider family attending events plus security at the scores of property they either own or are crown estate properties. Every time one of them goes somewhere in the country poor cash strapped councils have to manage security and shell out

Yes. I think Charles does have some sort of work ethic. A work ethic for a Royal, not like you or I would know it
But I think that's lacking in William

binkie163 · 30/10/2025 06:11

If I was William with that level of independent wealth I wouldn't work at all, sod that. I would enjoy my life and family. I would make sure my kids never had to work and if the country wanted me to do state visits I would charge them 250k plus expenses a day or they can find someone else to do it.

Baital · 30/10/2025 07:18

It's difficult to tell, because some work isn't publicly visible (red boxes), some is deliberately under the radar, and some is official and published.

He might do next to.nothing apart from the official bits, or he may do a lot.

Shetlands · 30/10/2025 19:13

Woohoo - it's happening! 👏

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/10/2025 19:19

Palace statement on the BBC:

Buckingham Palace statement in fullpublished at 19:05
19:05Breaking
We can now bring you the full statement from Buckingham Palace:
His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew.
His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.
Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.

ThePoshUns · 30/10/2025 19:20

Hurrah!

CathyorClaire · 30/10/2025 19:36

Thanks, Puzzled

Imagine implementing the precedent of a 'formal process' might give certain others pause for thought tonight too...

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 30/10/2025 19:40

The “alternative private accommodation” is apparently another property on the Sandringham estate, according to the Guardian.

diddl · 30/10/2025 20:14

It's quite a strong statement.

That said his deliberate association with JE after his conviction is disgusting enough to warrant it.

The rentals will take a nosedive!

Well, not as if they need the money!

I guess the difference is that Sandringham is not owned by the Crown Estates but is the private property of Charles.

Balmoral and Sandringham are both private property - George VI was forced to buy them from Edward VIII during the Edward and Wallace abdication crisis as he inherited them independently of being King and he wanted the money.

He won’t be happy about being shipped off to Sandringham. Apparently his favourite past time is ridiculing in Windsor Great Park and that’s now at an end. I bet William and Kate didn’t want him on their door step.

SloughResident · 27/10/2025 17:02

@canklesmctacotits ,she did, but it wasn't that much. 6-figure sum not millions.

It would be a huge amount for the average person even now, but she would have gone through it in no time.

Edited

That was the cash settlement.

The Queen either bought her a house or gave her the cash to buy one.

There were other things agreed like Andrew paying school fees.

Allseeingallknowing · 01/11/2025 14:27

They’re not without money, and can certainly afford housekeeping staff !

Allseeingallknowing · 01/11/2025 14:29

Serenster · 29/10/2025 16:23

No. Charles gets a proportion of the annual revenue of The Crown Estates (which is expected to be spent on official duties and an inviting the palaces held in trust for the nation amongst other things), and has the revenue of the Duchy of Lancaster.

The pubic purse (i.e. funds coming from taxpayers) pays for security for the royal family, as it also has for security for MPs etc.

Pubic purse? Why should taxpayers contribute to that? Bit below the belt,if you ask me!

ThePoshUns · 01/11/2025 14:45

I’m listening to Entitled on my walks. I walk to relax but goodness me this pair are making my blood boil. I’ve just got to the Epstein chapter.

jumpingthehighjump · 01/11/2025 15:17

Infuriating isn't it Posh ?
