Imagine doing this for a living. Philip and Susan are dead now.

Married people who honour their vows have nothing to fear it's not difficult if you have ethics and morals.

A reminder... for those that may need it. There isn't a royal exclusion clause.

I, [Name], take you, [Name],
to be my wedded wife/husband,
to have and to hold from this day forward,
to love, honour, and cherish you,
and to be faithful to you alone,
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
forsaking all others,
keeping myself only unto you,
till death us do part,
according to Godโ€™s holy law;
and this is my solemn vow.

I know, this is truly shocking yet everyone is harping on about Tony Blair!

The only shocking thing about it is the women/posters here who are once again willing to throw other woman under the bus for the sake of a bit of gossip.

CoffeeCantata · 07/08/2025 17:58

ThePoshUns · 07/08/2025 17:30

Why do you keep saying we donโ€™t know this for sure @CoffeeCantata?
Lownie is known for his meticulous research and this book would have been gone over by solicitors with a fine tooth comb.

Because he has just dropped it in with no comment as if itโ€™s accepted and general knowledge. It isnโ€™t, clearly, so we need more detail to back it up.

CurlewKate · 07/08/2025 17:59

CoffeeCantata · 07/08/2025 16:58

I was struck at the time (totally without prejudice then - I was young) by how horribly arrogant and unnecessarily snappy and high-handed he was towards the staff who were rescuing things.

We appear to have much in common-do you read Peter Wimsey? Because there is a scene in one of the โ€œfanficโ€ books by Jill Payton Walsh where Dukeโ€™s Denver burnt down and the Duke and Peter were directing the emergency servicesโ€ฆ.

Exactly. Susan Barrantes for one. I suspect the author has no idea

CoffeeCantata · 07/08/2025 18:02

@vera99

OKโ€ฆbut that sounds very harsh and 17th century puritan.

Marriages are private- who knows what each person knows, doesnโ€™t know, is happy or unhappy with or what arrangements and understanding they have mutually?

i thought you said this thread was about the yorks.

Well.... A book about the Yorks, with 5% in the book about Harry will mean that any thread will get skewed into talking about Harry endlessly unfortunately

In the Mail video I posted, the interviewer seemed a bit shocked and quickly moved on, but they still published it and added it to their usual clickbait headline. The Royals really should be wary of the Mail because, if they sense public support, they wonโ€™t hesitate to publish material that could potentially damage them. Meanwhile, Lord Rothermere sits comfortably in tax-avoidance paradise in Monaco, completely insulated. So, no pressure on the younger Royals then.

I do think that in this modern, non-deferential age of extreme scrutiny and social media, expecting them to perform for our (not mine!) sense of nationhood borders on a cruel, gilded cage. They could still be a rich aristocratic family but no longer have to perform for us just own a few fewer properties and pay a lot more tax.

diddl · 07/08/2025 18:07

I thought a lot of the bed hopping among aristos was due to arranged marriages.

Maybe it just became too ingrained??

Is there any evidence that PP was ever unfaithful?

Rumours have always swirled for sure but generally these folk don't gossip about themselves do they?

I remember when David Beckham was caught playing away with his hairdresser or someone and she sold the story to the papers. Since then, Iโ€™ve heard well-connected rumours involving aristocrats, which makes sense: they donโ€™t need the money and know how to keep quiet. Oh and Jilly Cooper has made a fortune from such stuff though I have never read a word and suspect it's literary trash !

Presidents donโ€™t get that kind of privilege just ask Bill Clinton. If you hold high public office, are funded by the public purse, and claim moral authority, then scrutiny comes with the territory. Itโ€™s absolutely fair game.

Well again , colour me naive but I think re cabbage throwing republicans - there has been sensible discussion on these threads . I usually preface my remarks in that I am largely in favour of a constitutional monarchy unless I can see something much better. To date , I , personally, haven't, but it doesn't mean there aren't reforms and scrutiny I would dearly love to see. But posts from eg @CathyorClaire or @CurlewKate ( not exclusively but as examples) I wouldn't describe as cabbage throwing and I hope they wouldn't categorise me as a rabid monarchist.

I have read by Andrew Lownie , The Traitor King (Edward VIII) , The Mountbattens , his book on Guy Burgess & he doesn't pull his punches when it comes to "The Establishment" & his footnotes as backup could make a slim volume in themselves. So based on that I trust him to have written a trustworthy book. Every who reads it must make up their own mind, as will I. I do think though that 3 excerpts "adapted for the DM" won't give a true flavour of the book and will concentrate on the more salacious and gossipy bits. It's a trailer & he wants to sell his books , obviously. But I'm OK with that - it's his living and if it gets some of the egregious behaviour more widely known - great. I suspect the book won't be as titillating and I expect more serious. But I've preordered it and am happy to report back when I've read it.

I actually know Andrew Lownie. He was my late husband's literary agent (his day job) and I'm still regularly in touch with him over royalties and editions.
Literary agents tend to be very au fait with the libel laws which is something to consider. They know that anything less than 100% accuracy just isn't worth the risk.
Andrew is very much the gent - not a seedy journalist but an academic historian. He's a meticulous researcher and has always seemed decent and honest to me.
Throwing that into the mix for what it's worth.

Susan Barrantes I suspect, was very much in charge of her own gossip. Many of the others, I agree, were much less so.

Thanks for the self-disclosure he really does come across that way in interviews, just as you said. You must know things the rest of us would kill forโ€ฆ metaphorically, of course!

I vaguely remember that Fergieโ€™s dad was caught coming out of a brothel on Wimpole Street by the News of the World back in the day a place reportedly frequented by a host of celebrities seeking help for various โ€œbackโ€ problems.

The more you say the more obvious it becomes that your world must be one huge cess pit.

BasiliskStare · 07/08/2025 18:24

Thank you for that @MaxandMeg . I've seen AL in an interview and he did come across very well. How interesting to know him. Certainly from how he references things in his other books I do think he would not say anything he could not substantiate. Anyway , thank you again , a lovely post. I. hope your husband's books are doing well. ๐Ÿ’

I think it's fair to say that my cesspit is but a thimbleful in the lake that is York's. A Hogarthian view of the Establishment offers a fine dirt-streaked prism through which to observe the world.
