But why then would Henry shake sleeping dogs out of their slumber with legal notices?

It's not like he doesn't have recorded form for being a bit handsy and all other things being equal, slapping Randy around would win him a lot more popular credit than being dumped in a dog bowl with a broken necklace.

In fairness, DogbowlGate exposed a whole new generation to the Bayeaux tapestry.

BTW, saw a trailer for that King and Conqueror movie. The armor looks dodgy.

Teado · 03/08/2025 23:16

Looking forward to the next instalment ! It’s about time this was given the attention it deserves. What a brave woman Virginia was. Contrast her with the greedy Sarah and the grasping daughters.

Not all public schoolboys of course. Or even most. But there is a particular type of posh boy who does go in for a type of sexual/scatalogical
humour coupled with very confident manners. Several of us on here recognised it immediately.

Thank you for saying not all public schoolboys or most. The better schools teach I think their pupils to wear their privilege lightly. My son has many such friends. I know the cliche of braying boorish oafs , I've met some believe me & they exist indubitably ,, but it isn't all. However it happened and it must be hard if you are a Prince of the Realm , PA and H don't seem to have learned how to wear their privilege lightly. Edward appears to a member of the general public ( ie me ) to be able to portray this in his more adult years. But I don't know the chap personally. & BTW there are many privileged children who have not been to public school but still wear it lightly. Or as I would call it , basic good manners. I may be coming over a bit Bufton Tufton there 😂

ETA why on earth is Harry worrying about this ? PA is pretty much the only royal less popular than he . Leave it alone I would say.

I’m not expecting her to be a gifted orator, but one of the things that private schools usually instil is the ability to speak in public. The POW is good at off the cuff chats with the public- it seems to come naturally to her. Not so good at delivering a speech.

To be fair, Diana wasn't good at speeches either. She ended up seeing a coach who taught her that "three to four words and a pause" style she used later on. "It is a privilege...pause.... to be here... pause... with you today...." etc. Very stilted but also more relatable to most people than Meghan's obvious ease with public speaking.

BasiliskStare · 04/08/2025 00:27

@gishgalloping - I agree with this. My husband did not go to public school but he can speak to a big audience . He just can & be engaging, I don't know why but it comes easily to him. I'm more of a one to one person. I think people can be taught to be a competent public speaker , & lucky to be taught the skills ,but if it doesn't come naturally , it's hard. But if you are the RF most speeches will be written to fit the time available and just expected to be delivered competently.

This may amuse some “If you want me to give you a two-hour presentation, I am ready today. If you want only a five-minute speech, it will take me two weeks to prepare.”
Mark Twain

CurlewKate · 04/08/2025 05:45

Thinking about this- it occurred to me that the real victims in all this-the exploited and abused women-are going to be lost in the more exciting and dramatic RF shenanigans, aren’t they?

Stuckinasitiation · 04/08/2025 05:51

I don’t think Diana was a great public speaker. She did her best but it wasn’t a natural talent despite her expensive education. There are far more important things . Being good with people one to one, being genuinely caring and authentic . I think Kate is a very genuine person.

Maybe because it's only DM who have published so far.

The actual book isn't due for release until 14th August.

I'm marking the date in my upcoming vexatious legal actions diary 😁

I don't understand why he's doing this. Do publishers consult with lawyers before going ahead with a book , to ensure what's being printed is accurate and to stop this very thing from happening?

CoffeeCantata · 04/08/2025 07:33

@CurlewKate @BasiliskStare

I’ve worked in a boys’ public school and all those I met ranged from perfectly pleasant to very nice indeed! I think it’s a bit of a myth nowadays that such boys are horrible snobs. Privileged, of course, but they live more in the real world than in past generations. The boys I knew were genuinely enthusiastic in all the charity and outreach activities the school did, and a few even thought they were very left wing, bless them!

Just saying that going to public school is no expectation for turning out like Andrew.

CoffeeCantata · 04/08/2025 07:35

Going to public school is no EXCUSE, not no expectation….

I think if you are publishing a book about someone as litigious as H, you will be sure of your facts. Interestingly, this morning the DM website has put up a story about the M bullying allegations.

I totally agree. She wasn’t, and it wasn’t an issue at all.

And did we dislike her for it? No!

And did she harm the monarchy by it? No!

And did her message fail to land because of it? No!

I would roll my eyes if Catherine started giving slick, actressy or TV presenter-like orations

Yes, and Yes

What Harry has done is all just bluster, with very little legal weight behind it.

He did similar with the BBC - it's a bullying tactic to try to get people to back down. The BBC stood by their story and Harry had nothing else to do.

Obviously there are loads of public school
boys who are perfectly lovely! But there is a particular type of obnoxious that exists in that habit. And Andrew is a prime example. The only one, it seems, of his siblings who is-which shows that NAPSBALT. They were referred to in my circle when young as rugger-buggers. They did not necessarily play rugby….

CurlewKate · 04/08/2025 07:52

It does seem very strange that Harry is denying something that would probably raise him in the estimation of most people!

Exactly. The DM won’t risk paying out to him again. They’ve lulled him into a false sense of security by publishing some very soft stories about him of late and then bam! Have some of that. Harry think he’s smart and playing the media, too stupid to see they are playing him.

I agree. I don’t understand why he’s denying it. If the “punchee” had been someone more respected, ok, but most people have reacted with …meh!

I can only assume that Andrew, Fergie or one of the daughters has something on him or his wife. But who knows.

The role given to Andrew of Britain's special representative for international trade and investment makes me think of this chap

I’m sure they still exist but are in the minority, especially now! It’s the same with bankers. The ones I’ve met (only 4/5, granted) have been sensitive, cultured, kind people who put a lot of energy into charity work. One spent time in Nepal every year helping with building and other projects there.

All I’m saying is - we should be aware of stereotyping. But Andrew is totally the stereotype of the most boorish, thick, ignorant and arrogant upper class man. I really don’t think there are many (if any) like him today.

He should be drawn by Rowlandson or Gilray!

I think that Andrew is probably exactly like Sir Les , just without Sir Les’s humour and cheeky antipodean charm.

Ooh, that does sound like an interesting read — though I suspect I’d be throwing the book at the wall more than once thanks to that pompous twat. I’ve always wondered how four children raised under the same roof turned out so differently. And honestly, I’m surprised Philip ever let him get away with that kind of behaviour.

They were not raised under the same roof and with the same parents. HMQ undertook a lot of overseas visits in the early years of her reign. And in those days it wasn't a few hours flight it was a ship to most Charles and Anne were brought up by the queen mother and nannies.

Thedom · 04/08/2025 08:19

I think it’s more about Meghan than about Andrew, denying the physical fight is just a byproduct of them defending Meghan and the questions it raises about her background and her being an opportunist, which has already been reported the Queen also believed.

And there really is nothing to suggest Philip would not approve.

I agree, although the physical fight supposedly happened in 2013 so well before Harry met Meghan.

So he could have denied that the conversation about M took place without denying the physical fight.

I wonder if it’s because it puts him in the place of the aggressor, rather than the victim, which is his preferred role to play. Still, it seems a very bizarre thing to bother refuting so immediately and publicly, in context of everything else being said about them.

does feel like there has to be more going on behind the scenes.

H&M seem to not like the boot being on the other foot now. Things said about them and they aren’t happy. The Oprah interview is what sticks in the mind about H&M for me.

I think it’s madness that this furore has become all about H & M when it’s about Andrew!

Either the BP PR machine are doing a great job of deflecting bc they know the Andrew story may reflect badly on them, or newspaper editors and journalists know which stories generate more clicks.
